Was the AutoDemo released similar at all to this?

no, not even close, the autodemo is dated 40 somthing days after SA's unveiling, the autodemo is a stripped down TGS build, the TIF build is the one with things like, early icecap and windy valley

CMR2.0 is protected by a DRM dongle. I think Tom said something like "if you know how to crack this let me know".

I mean, early Windy Valley was able to be recreated from the one level file found on the AutoDemo. Did the TIF build have all the original textures and the like?

I'd be curious to take a look at that myself. Anything early SA has my interest.

the TIF build was used to showcase sonic adventure, so everything shown in screenshots from the time are all from that build, and yeah it had complete windy valley, a guy i know may own it, and im willing to pay quite alot to get my hands on it

@darkspire17, it's worth getting in touch with that guy you know, if he truly has the TIF-build I'm sure the whole Sonic community gladly chips in to get this one out there!

From what I was able to understand this so called "Dongle" is just a regular VMU with a special file on it that enables CMR 2.0 to run a retail Dreamcast.
If that's indeed the case it's possible to just copy that one file off of the VMU onto an SD-Reader using DreamShells VMU Manager app and then copy it back onto any other VMU to enable the game to run on different systems - sure it would be an extra step to get it working but hardly a very difficult one.

Anyway I've been trying to sell one of my Compact Flash modded Dreamcasts to this guy for some time now to get him to make digital backups of these Betas, but Tom was just contacting me yesterday telling me to not hold my breath for him respond to my offer since he's rather busy working in IT atm and doesn't care much about games or the Dreamcast community anymore...
Also the games Tom was showing us don't actually seem to belong to him personally but to one of his ex-colleagues who's now working in China which makes him very difficult to get in touch with and ask for permission.

A real wasted opportunity is what I would call this whole situation.

It's not possible to copy it just like that, it's been tried already afaik.

It would depend on what was needed from the vmu:

    1. Checking if something merely exists (easy)
    2. Using data from that special something (harder)

Of course this is pure speculation, but I also think @thedoctor45x is right in terms of the CMR 2.0 dongle just being a regular VMU with a specific save file on it (most likely this save file has a copy protection on it, which can easily be defeated). It would be epic seeing this one getting released someday, but till that day comes I'm happy that we at least were able to see it running on actual hardware.

Yes, obviously, you're both right. That's not the problem, the problem is that the data on the vmu isn't normal vmu data.

But is the game/image even in the wild? Because if it isn't then this doesn't matter because I can't disassemble dreams haha

"may" own it? Have you made any offers? Does the Sonic community at large know about it? They could probably help you out with getting it released.
