I had always been up to date with games that were coming out until around 2008, 2009 when my interest suddenly vanished completely. When new games are being released nowadays, it always hits me like a surprise when there's a new Resident Evil or Metal Gear Solid or Halo - back then, it felt like an eternity until a new RE-game was released and I anticipated it over years. Now it's just there, I'll never buy or play it and I hardly notice its existence. I also tend to become less and less knowledgable about games after 2008 in general. I could hardly tell you what has been released for current consoles after the Gears of War/Killzone 2/Mario Galaxy years. I didn't even know there was a Killzone 3 until yesterday or so. It feels a bit weird because I suddenly feel like I lose the passion for my hobby, but that's apparently not the case. I just focused completely on old games and still expand my knowledge, collection and passion for it almost every day. I just quit the modern game market and have zero interest in the successors for 360/ps3/wii, news about them don't even get me excited. I'm a bit confused why my interest has shifted so much but I guess it is because I find modern games kind of boring and the online distribution disgusts me and I'll never accept and adapt it. Anyone else who feels like this?
I can go a step further and tell you I barely know anything in the Gears of War/Killzone 2/Mario Galaxy years too. It is called getting old(er). For me, I sorta took a back seat from hardcore gaming around 2005-2006. Aside from my recent DIrectX 11 spending spree, most of the games I buy now are usually years old, discounted and have a co-op mode. I can still spend 15 hours a day gmaing on weeks on end when the mood strikes but it is few and far between, especially as now there are so many distractions (damn thy PC + laptop next to me... never had this problem with a console that only played games )
I have not. And I probably never will. I had a phase when I was younger when I thought new games were crap. Then I realized I was a moron and then I hit puberty. (just my experience) I say enjoy everything for what it is. Regardless of era.
I've almost completely given up on console gaming, sold all my gear, barely know any of the upcoming releases. PC gaming is just far better IMO and I'm upto date on releases, however there are somethings that annoy me. DRM - I bought FEAR cheapo when I first got my GFX card and because I had either A. Two DVD drives or B, Daemon Tools and Nero it would not run because of the shitty motherfucking DRM. Issues like that are rare but another game that basically wont work on Vista and 7 because of DRM is Postal 2, it uses Starforce DRM and Windows HATES this. I absolute hate DRM and thankfully its not all THAT common to have issues like I mentioned.
In newer games i feel like i have less control of what i'm doing. Everything seems to be more "automatic" these days depending on the games i play i guess. I prefer Playstation 1 & 2 games.
I've completely left my PS3. I used to play Battlefield all the time, but really I've realized how... repetitive it is. Just no fun anymore. I've now using my PS2 more than ever. Jak and Daxter need to be completed again...
I feel exactly the same way. To add to it; with current consoles, microsoft/sony/nintendo have too much control over the consoles because of how on-line dependent they are. I love old consoles/games, but I also love to play online with my ps3 and to do this my ps3 becomes bound to sony's terms. I didnt want to lose linux, but i also wanted to keep playing online... Then theres the whole strict DRM thing, and sony recently changed the rules on that too. If the rumors about how 2nd-hand games will require a pass to play are true with the next gen consoles, im out, ill stick with my old consoles/games.
Since I started university I didn't really followed the new/current gen. Actually the only new game I play are all part of one series I follow for many years like, Mario, Zelda, Metroid, DKC, Smash Bros., StarFox, Half-Life, Resident Evil, Gran Turismo... I don't even bother looking/reading about those new games/series. I barely have time to play the new games coming from the series I follow all ready anyway . When I don't have a new game I have to finish I happily replay some SNES or N64 games
I quit gaming after the last gen, I don't even own a current gen machine. though gaming has always had money involved, it has become rediculous the last 10 years.
Wait there are newer consoles than the Dreamcast? I gave up long ago, when modern gaming was much younger or older - where was I heading with this? The most recent "modern" game I played all the way through was Red Alert 2 / Yuri's Revenge on the old Athlon 500MHz. Guess my time ended a decade ago... That said, anything before that time is still great and can still be enjoyable. Like Crystal Caves :wink-new:
My PS3 has been stuck in the cupboard for months. The only reason I bought it was for the Uncharted series. I still play all the various Spectrum Manic Miner hacks.
Without Demon's Souls and Dark Souls I would probably have sold my PS3 already, and Spelunker HD is the only PSN game that I play regularly. Used to have a 360 for about three months and then I grew sick of it. Going to get a supergun soon and stop reading about current gen news..
I had until last week when I bought a Vita. For the first time in years im genuinely excited about a system. Sad thing is I can see it suffering.
You're not a alone ave, I feel exactly the same way. In fact I've noticed myself watching more movies than ever, I play only one current "gen" of a game and that's blur, cause it's great online. I haven't QUIT modern gaming, cause I just love collecting, so I'm always buying games on clearance sales, but I do hardly play them. I bought resident evil 5 and I haven't touched it, and actually it hasn't even been out of the case. I'm only waiting for Lollipop Chainsaw, Dead or Alive 5 and the new Carmageddon, I can't see myself being a current gen "hardcore" gamer at all. I just can't stand this GRAPHICS over GAMEPLAY bullshit we're seeing today. Hardly any of my friends see this, they say the same thing just to please me as I can see them being amazed by graphics more than the actual game and they always bring up the topic "XXXXX game was crap" I often reply "I told you so". Sometimes I come to the conclusion that I'm out growing my hobby, I'm not sure if anyone else has had this feeling, but I really feel like this. I've been buying more Nintendo 64 and XBOX (XBOX) than any console lately. My XBOX 360, Playstation 3 and Wii have more dust on them than those two consoles I just mentioned. I as well haven't really been paying much attention to this current generation, all these games are usually unpolished on release, updates, Internet required, facebook connection, twitter connection, EVERYTHING LINKS, and I hate it........ Now let's look at the market currently. All stores are selling is "CALL OF DUTY, BATTLEFIELD, CALL OF DUTY, BATTLEFIELD, CALL OF DUTY, BATTLEFIELD, CALL OF DUTY, BATTLEFIELD, CALL OF DUTY, BATTLEFIELD, CALL OF DUTY, BATTLEFIELD, CALL OF DUTY, BATTLEFIELD, CALL OF DUTY, BATTLEFIELD, CALL OF DUTY, BATTLEFIELD, CALL OF DUTY, BATTLEFIELD," I guess there isn't any more room left for us, and really I'm starting to lose my interest. Which always reminds me of this episode of The Simpsons It's gamers like us "true gamers" that keep classic consoles alive, because they actually MEAN something, and take a look at their success rates, so many of them die within 2 years of use. My Atari 2600, still running and jumping like a cheerleader! I guess I could go on and on about this, but you're not alone none-the-less.
I will play any FPS whether it is new or retro. Also I am surprised at many people my age play air-soft on the weekends.
It's all about age. I went through the same way of thinking. I didn't even get me 360 until November 2009 because I had no interest in it at all but all of a sudden I wanted to get back in to modern gaming. For many many years I was happy just playing Saturn stuff but now I play games from all generations. To say you don't like modern gaming is to say you don't like gaming at all. Modern or old games still ay the same. The only realy thing to change is the look. Sure, there's a lot of the smae shit out now but so there was back in the past. Mega Drive had way too many shooters, SFC had way too many platformers and RPGs. Yakumo
My 360 isn't even Plugged in right now and the last thing I used my 360 for was to Watch Wrestlemania. While my Saturn is damn near never turned off these days. Not to say 360 games don't get me exicted though, I have Lolipop Chainsaw preodered (THIS BETTER BE the Suda 51 game I get into) as I have DOA 5 and Persona 4 Arena preordered. It's just, the future has me worried about gaming, are we entering an era of disposable games you buy a game, play it then throw it out since you can't give it to a friend or trade it in. The idea of games being disposable I think degrades gaming as an art form Look at iOS games.
