I quit PC gaming for a long time. Last game i got was probably Day of Defeat Source. Yes, i'm not joking.

I'll probably play some recent stuff with the new PC i'm building but it's not something i'm looking forward. I always end up playing emulators.

As for consoles, i play my PS3 when i have free time. But i really like it, just like old consoles. But i don't go anywhere near the trends. So no modern combat FPS for me.

I'm out there playing Airsoft every weekend. I just got a shipment of about 300 dollars of gear in the mail yesterday.

For me it's been like this for ages, the difference is that before I said to myself "if I had that console I would play that game" but it was an excuse: after I bought the console I didnt even bother to try the game, let alone finish it.

I quit PC gaming when I got tired of wasting $500 every 6 months for a new GFX card, that and more and more studios leaving PC for consoles.

Still lets be honest there was plenty of shit around when we were kids, problem is our standards and those of the whole industry are much higher now so its a matter of contrast and not actual "suckiness"

I hate COD but I dont blame it for "ruining the industry". If you want someone to blame thats social games and the fuckers who peedle that shit around: the number of actual paying users of those games are nothing compared to gamers, and 19 out of 20 social gaming companies go bankrupt, but still every time I read some blog there's this dipshit former-banker (post-bailout butthurt 99% of the time) saying social games are killing real games, and because they said that retarded investors put their money on the next shitVille instead of actual game studios.

Man you must have been a real enthusiast because my card is two years old and ran Battlefield 3 beta relatively well, the were a few odd FPS sudden drops which I put down to my CPU (Only a Dual Core)

Agree with the latter though, and the crap console ports we get (GTA IV namely)

GTA 4 might as well have run in a 360 emulator.

Here's the thing: if you want what you can't get on consoles which is true 1080p with high quality textures you gonna be stuck at sub-30 fps levels with that old card, not because it can't handle BF3 but because EA couldn't fucking optimize the game and it eats 10x resources than it does in consoles.

It was bad enough we had shit ports from consoles, but now we are not getting even that.

I thought as much, granted BF3 isn't a game I wanted to play (mainly because it's crap.) but even so.

I'll take a game that is supposed to look cinematic and has amazing asthetics @30FPS than some game that tries to go for 60FPS that looks like shit, and feels like it was filmed on a home video camera.

A lot of games @60FPS are fine.

But some IMO just look and feel better at 30. Especially if they were designed with that in mind.

Take the MGSHD collection for example, MGS2 originally ran at 60FPS in Gameplay and ran 30FPS in cutscenes. Now it runs 60FPS all the times and it completely ruins the feel of the cinematics.

Same thing with MGS3 except on a bigger level and at a gigantically variable framerate(especially on PS3) because they were retards and couldn't just Cap it at 30 like it was originally designed, which was cinematic in nature.

Plus 30FPS comes with some good and bad tradeoffs. Higher Rendering overhead for better IQ for one on the good side. Slightly less responsiveness from the controls(though hardly noticeable in many games).

Next Gen consoles really not only need more powerful hardware to run games at 1080p, but hardware that isn't JUST "Good enough" to run current games at 1080p. It needs to push beyond. And for fucks sake give consoles dedicated System and Video RAM. Instead of trying to share one tiny bus that isn't good enough.

It'd be nice if they'd give you some video options too depending on what you want ,ala what Tekken 6 does.

Choose between 30FPS/60FPS modes. (30FPS mode would obviously have higher IQ.)Etc. (though Multiplayer modes should ALWAYS be as close to 60 as possible and if you can't get a constant 60, cap it at something slightly lower that won't ever get slowdown. Between 40-55. No Vsync either since it introduces input lag in a lot of cases)

Also: BF3 on Consoles runs at 30FPS at around 1,000,000 pixels. Comparatively on PC's you are trying to run settings WAY BEYOND what they have on consoles at 2 times the resolution of consoles(720p=921,600 Pixels. 1080p=2,073,600 Pixels) , while ALSO trying to get 60FPS which is going to be highly variable. It's not that isn't optimized, it's demanding. As well in Multiplayer the game NEEDS a powerful CPU(The Consoles only have 24 Players at max. While PC has 64 2.6X as many players. Your PC has to handle all of the high end rendering as well being able to keep track of what is going on , on the battlefield). You can pit a lower end CPU and Higher end one against each other in SP and you will get similar experiences. In multiplayer, the Lower end CPU will crumble. And if you implement a FrameCap Via MSI Afterburner, (Or via a cfg file) or with NvidiaInspector that is manageable by your system. The experience will a LOT smoother.

User Ignorance =/= Poorly Optimized. If you want a poorly optimized and buggy game. Go play Crysis 1 on PC. One of my favorite games, but it's also probably the buggiest game i've ever played and poorly optimized to boot. Though most Mid range cards today can play the game fine at it's in game highest settings decently. Once you go beyond in game settings and customize every CVAR you can think of to make image quality better (along with many mods as well) performance drips away.

Hmmm... there have been a handful of times when I "quit modern gaming".

When the Saturn was dying out (in the U.S.) for the most part I quit. Sure, I picked up what Saturn games came out, but outside of that I just spent my time playing Total Annihilation on the computer. I didn't get back into current console gaming real heavy until the Dreamcast came out, and that lasted until early on in the Xbox's life(maybe year 2?).

Then I pretty much quit until the Xbox360 came out and focused on Saturn/Dreamcast collecting. Once the 360 came out, I got into that until Microsoft went retarded (i.e. I got tired of waiting for a new Mistwalker announcement for the 360 that never came) and then I pretty much quit gaming period (considering I had sold 90% of my Saturn collection in... 2007? Actually lived off of them funds for half a year! Not working helped my academics a lot).

Got back into it recently though. Been playing FFXIII and FFXIII-2, and I'm looking forward to playing some Xenoblade Chronicles.

And of course, this is CONSOLE gaming I'm talking about. Ever since the DS first came out I've been a fairly steady handheld gamer.

I know kotaku sucks but someone on another forum posted a nice infographic about the age of the X360

TLDR: in the same amount of time we got Genesis, SegaCD, 32X and Saturn from SEGA, the SNES, VirtualBoy and N64 from Nintendo, and the PSX and PS2 from Sony

There really isn't much going on these days, not compared to our time

I know Im new here but wanted to put in my 2 cents worth...

For me gaming is remembering how it felt to go to the movie rental store and find a new NES game to rent, or when Santa would leave me a new game or two under the tree. Also heading next door to play Smurfs and Beemrider on the Colecovision. Thinking wow they really look like the Smurfs on T.V. Now Im all grown up, have 2 kids and what seems to be a never ending battle for time. I have not been able to play a 'new' game of my choice since about Christmas of '11 (which was Death Smiles for the 360). I havent really given up on modern gaming by choice but by lack of finding the time! I wonder if Im not alone in this category. I do however hate going into gamestop and such and all I hear at the counter is how I need to pre order this or that... or sign up for some other program... I usually decline and say all I really want is to buy this game and go put it on my shelf so that one day I might actually be able to play it... they look at me kind of funny hahahaha, but seriously I have over a dozen 360 games Ive never opened plus countless used ones I havent been able to try out. I think even more unopened original xbox games. Im a collector and love buying games old, or new. If they look fun I get them. The reason for my lack of modern gaming seems to be time. If I can find an hour, I really dont want to start a new game because of the time it takes to really get involved. An hour is usually not enough to even scratch the surface. These new games are detailed! So I will try to plug in a NES or SNES or Genesis or what ever.
--It is however awesome to be able to teach my 6yr old about all the 'old' games. Its like these games are built for kids. I love it when he asks me to hook up my 64 so he can play Snowboard Kids 2 and Super Mario 64. He loves a ton of particular games for multipal systems. Kind of living through him at the moment. He is my future gamer for sure. He has a Wii (of course) and plays all the 'lego' games equally... its fun to watch. I dont know what the future of gaming holds for me but I figure it will live on with my kids. I will continue to teach them about how games got to where they are now so they can appreciate where they are now.

I feel like every series I loved has gone completely down the drain this generation (with maybe one or two exceptions), which is why I've lost interest. Gaming has become too standardized to me, as if nobody wants to experiment with making their game unique. A few titles I've played on the PS3 did impress me, but even the ones I did like are far too linear. I can tell you for 100% certainty that I won't be buying a next gen console.

Anyway, I'll soon be finishing college, and I've decided to just stick with my trusty gamecube. I basically handed off my PS3 to my mother so that she could watch Netflix on it... Seems like an appropriate use for a $400 machine.

I din't touch anything new in like the past 5 years (beside some DS and PSP games).
I have absolutely no interessts in present or next gen games.
Is it a bad thing? I don't think so. why? because I'm not interessted in, so why should it be a bad thing then?

@ Knightrider, don't put your lils so near the tube man. He could get a tube burn ;)

I noticed that too. It seems like we reached an era in which technological advances lost some of their importance. Imagine we got the Xbox 360 only 4 years after its launch, even less in Europe. The PS2 had an amazing and long-lasting impact, but even this hardware got replaced after 6 years. The PS3 with less of an impact and almost 6 years of retail still hasn't been updated.

I can't say i quit, but most newer games i play are PSP/DS ones, some Wii games too.

For PC gaming - my PC runs only Linux now, so if game has no DRM or can be cracked and runs in wine i'll probably will play it but the newest PC game i played that's not an indie one is Mass Effiect 2. Also played Skyrim, got bored quite fast.
PC is mostly emulator machine for me.

I hate a few things about new games - heavy invasive rootkit-like DRM, required internet connection to play offline games, DLC aka Deliberately Locked Content (Street Fighter X Tekken anyone ? ) And there won't be any nextgen console for me, at least until they will be cracked to hell (except maybe Wii U) - they want to make used games unplayable, also same crap - online activation of offline game, and game will be locked to console. I probably won't buy PSVita, and i don't have plans to buy 3DS in the nearest future too because i still have lots of games from NES ones to PS2/GC etc to play.

Don't need to buy a new card every 6 months really, every two years is fine. Takes two years for the new cards to really kick the old cards butt. Just replaced my ATI5870 with a GTX680, no reason to upgrade until now. If you buy every new card coming out you're getting a 20% speed up, not worth your time, just to play one or two high end games well.

I've stopped buying new games for a couple of years, because I have 70 games on my "To finish" list, and they're all good games. I don't need 71 games on my list. So I'm going to play those, then play these new awesome games when they get cheap. God of War 4, Diablo III, all that good stuff.

Thing about "modern gaming" is you really can just opt out. If you like old school 2D shooters a ton still come out. On PC, on iPad (need one of these to play em: http://www.ionaudio.com/products/details/icade ) one called Shogun Rise of the Renegade just came out, people like that, good one on 360 just now, forget it's name... Sine Mora. Nobody is holding a gun to your head and making you play Modern Warfare... I don't, I play Black Ops, I like killing zombies. Zombies are fun. :)

People need to make more walk along fighters like Bare Knuckle, though, the genre is completely dead.

Still totally pumped for games. No, I'm not running out to pick up that Kinect Star Wars game, or drooling over Sorcery on Move. I've discovered that you don't need to wave your arms and legs around to play games, you can in fact play them... By just moving your thumbs. So much more relaxing that way!

Even motion controls can be fun. All those great gun games I used to play as a kid now work on me Plasma TV, how cool is that.

Playing so many great games these days. Super Mario Galaxy 2, LA Noire, Batman Arkham City, Trine 2, DKC Returns, yadda yadda. Have to find out what this fuss about Dota 2 is all about. Enjoying my games at the moment.

I totally need a iCade, Air Attack HD looks good too.

Good luck. Dota has probably the worst player base out of any current game.

I'm going through I phase right now where I don't even want to play ANYTHING. I haven't bought a game since the holidays. I got MW3 and Skyrim for cheap off Amazon. I haven't opened Skyrim and I'm done playing MW.

I've mostly just been reading books, comic books, and watching movies. Every once in a while I'll play Super Smash Bros. but that's about it...
