Do you think a dsl 768kb up line is good enough for
a web server for one site or some files?

It depends on the publicity of your website. If you will get barely any visitors, I'd say it should be perfectly ok, though some visitors with high bandwidth connections might be irritated by the relatively slow speed of your connection.

However, I wouldn't suggest setting up a server if you plan to have more visitors, or content that could reach news or something like that. In such cases your router and/or server will usually crash.

Is this for the content sorting you spoke of in another thread? Depending on how you set up access and how many users you decide to participate on the project, the 768KB might be good enough.

The ISP might not like you doing it and it will be slow but it should be fine as a short term measure. Do you have a static IP?

I've had a media ftp for myself that i can access mostly anywhere running over DSL, haven't had any issues on my end (the ISP is another story), and its been going good for a bit over a year

Go for it, see what happens, if it works, good, if not, well at least you tried

It allows for a webserver or ftp, the fastest they have is 768 up.
$39.99 a month but I am trying to find cheaper.

Don't do it. DSL providers (unless you specifically get a business grade connection) may claim that you can run a webserver, but they block ports, throttle the connection speed, have an unreasonably low (and hidden) bandwidth cap and generally do not actually give you the speeds that they claim. The 768kbps upstream bandwidth may sound reasonable, but you would probably never get close to seeing that speed or you could hit an arbitrary cap and have your connection dropped completely for "abuse". I looked into this option for my website, which has pretty much no traffic at all, and found it to be an unacceptable way to go. Now, having said that, if you get a business grade DSL connection, most of these problems are reduced.

    I can get business cable 30mb / 5mb for $65 a month

I can run a server and web page off it according to them.

I just like how my local phone company doesn't give a fuck what I do on dsl, where as my local cable company is VERY interested and monitors
upstream for "abusive data uploads" , basically p2p.

Is it ComCast? They do that, however Brighthouse down here in FL really doesn't.

Two things here could be helpfull, make the server an FTP server, and give people an individual password, and also give them individual rights. And let the server run peerguardian 24/7

in the earlier version of peetguardian, you could make their blocklist into a zonealarm blocklist, and so forth. But I am quite unsure nowadays with it. Anyway those two advices were just advices.

It should be fast enough, I ran a webserver for a while on a cable connection half that speed.

If you don't have a static IP (which you probably don't have), your IP will be changing every now and again. The solution is to register for free with http://www.dyndns.com , and they give you a subdomain you can route to your IP address.

You won't know if it works until you try it :)

Time Warner's Road Runner service never sent me any emails about my interweb usage, though you would be in a different area (More NYC-ish, mine is considered Hudson Valley).

Why would you do this when you can get a lot faster, more space and bandwidth through Godaddy for like $4/ month?

Because I can just walk downstairs and plug in 300gb of files?
    Try doing that via godaddy.

It's not the speed or the hosting, it's the ability to have large amounts of data without month long uploads. Do you know how long it would take to upload 300gb of files to a web server over my cable line? I'd probably be capped for extended uploads or even lose my service completely.

Umm.... About the same amount of time as distributing each file to one person on the same line? Obviously had you stated how much space you were talking about, that would have shot that idea.

I ran a webserver out of my cable connection (Roadrunner) in Hawaii. It was mainly just for me to slap notes into a MySQL database while I was at work. So, no big traffic. They did not, however, block the ports.

I'm not distributing, they are sorting them, and then they are being torrented.

You don't need to download to sort, textures here, c code there.

Don't skimp on the server either. Having unlimited bandwidth and speeds great, but if you're using a shitty P2 333, she'll go down faster than a drunk guy on Jenna Jameson. Not saying you would use an old POS, but a lot of people forget the strain visitors can have on a CPU, especially when that site's as popular as this one.

It's not this site that is going on the server, it's a "members only" site.
