First off, sorry if this is in the wrong thread, but I THINK it should go here.

Anyway, I was just wondering if somebody, anybody, could please help me out. I really want a DS Lite very badly. I purchased the original version, not long after launch from EB almost a year and a half ago without an extended warranty. However, it is in extremely good condition. I took good care of it just as all the games and systems I collect. Oh, I have the receipt as well...if that means anything.

So my question, is there anyway possible to exchange the original for the Lite version? Does anyone know of any stores that might allow an exchange w/o a receipt?

I know its a crapshoot, but I would really like to own one. I guess if all else fails, I could sell it on eBay for $70 - 80.

Any ideas, thoughts, suggestions, etc. are greatly appreciated...

A straight up trade - old school DS for a Lite? No way, no how. With the Lite out you'll be lucky to get $50 on an instore credit someplace.

Sorry to burst your bubble, bu it just isn't happening.

Which is precisely why I sold my DS a few months ago. I may pick up a lite, but Id rather wait for some kind of Revolution attachment. The handhelds dont agree with my hands :\

Yeah, I figured it'd be pretty unlikely. I was just seeing if anyone had any better ideas than I could muster.

Plus, Target almost let me exchange it. I went in with everything in-tact and asked to exchange it. The lady at the counter just opened it to make sure everything was there. But when she went to use my ID, the computer system wouldn't allow me to return it. She suspected I had already reached the limit of 2 returns w/o a receipt. She said all i would need is to get someone else's ID who hasn't reached the limit and use theirs.

So, I retrieved my fiance, and proceeded to use hers (she was present with me, though). However, I the computer system gave them the same error. The lady called her boss over and politely explained that they can't do anything since the system won't let me return it. He said they would, but there is no getting around the system. It also didn't give them a reason asto why I couldn't return it. It just wouldn't allow it.

    But, at least they tried.

Also, to my knowledge, if you try returning systems to Wal-mart these days, if you didn't purchase it from them, they'll tell you where you purchased it from and when. They are linked into a database through Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft.

    But...I digress...

I remember someone here claimed they bought a video game item from elsewhere and returned it to their local WalMart...

Heres a idea. Buy a new normal DS if you can find one. Then return the old one like it was the one you just bought and get your money back.

Now you have your money and a brand new DS thats unopened. Then take that to TARGET and get it changed out ;)

Thanks for the suggestion. Sounds like a good idea in theory, but the serial numbers on the back of the system will be mismatched...

The serial numbers wont matter. Unless you get like a super smart person who knows about that kind of thing. Anyway if they say the serial dosent match just say you dont know why and that its Nintendos fault.

Remember the customer is always right so they will let it slide. just dont do it to ofton. Also take it back in the middle of the night. The graveyard workers are the brighteset :)

I do this stuff all the time. Like when I need 2 CD-Keys for my buddy and I. I open the first one, copy down the key then take it back and get another copy of the same game and thus a second key for my buddy :)

Also Im not worried because they wont put stuff back on the shelf until its tested and found ok. And even if it is they wont come to you because it could have been something else of yours (TV??) causenig the problem.

There is a word for that: piracy. You might want to consider that some people here live off money that comes from game sales.

The company still gets payed, that is, the game company, since I dont think they are in the business of sending free product to game stores and waiting to be paid. It still is wrong, no doubt, but it happens sadly :\

Well, thank you for all the insight and your suggestions. I think I might do the Wal-mart switcharoo late at night. Maybe I'm shortsighted in my thinking, but I wouldn't be as obsessed getting a DS Lite this way if I didn't get so little in return ($50 trade-in value at EB) when I paid $150 for it.

Nonetheless, I think I might give it a shot.

  16. just ebay it, you can get 90 bucks easy

Each and every one of you "switchers" should be turned in to the police. I am sick of buying "new" items (games, movies, consoles, etc.) in stores only to open them and find out they are resealed, returned items.

If you want to get rid of the old DS, either ebay or craigslist it.

Well, I just got home from Wal-mart. You'll be happy to know that I was not able to exchange my DS. The Wal-mart where I live, in addition to 2 others, did not have the one that comes with the Metroid Prime Hunters demo. So, I wouldn't be able to return mine b/c I'd be returning one with a Metroid Prime Hunters SKU with an original DS SKU receipt.

Nonetheless, my only hope is to try eBay. Btw, what is this craigslist you speak of? I'd like to learn more...

    Thanks...

Just stick it up BIN (boxed, mint etc) on ebay for $99 and see if there are any takers. I think the resulting $50 you'll have to stomach for the upgrade is probably worth it given you've had your DS since near-launch.

If you want to discuss fraud there are probably forums more accepting of that elsewhere, incidentally. I know I'd be pissed as hell if I bought something that was "new" that was in fact just swapped out for someone else's old gear. It's not just some faceless corporate entity you're fucking over then, it's actual people. If you're going to potentially mess with my future purchases it gets a bit personal - hopefully you can understand why some people think this is out of order.

Well, you're probably right, in that it would take somebody actually bothering to check the serial number. But all Nintendo systems are (or at least were a few years ago) registered by serial number in a database when they're purchased. Back in my Toys R Us days, we could scan the SN on any returned system or call a 1-800 number and punch it in and it would tell us when it was purchased and where, letting us know if we could take it back or not.

But like you said, whoever's taking the return has to actually bother to scan it.
