iPhone + MP3 + Games? Every kid will want one. I'm just surprised you can't buy a version of the PSP which has a phone built in.

I say they are just going to patent full-multitouch UI for games so the next DS wont be a complete iPhone rip-off (Apple knows nintendo "likes" to "borrow" some of his design and concepts...)

Or they could be working in the "next big thing", which will probably be just another nanosaur, but the hype will keep the few remaining apple gamers from shooting themselves on the head:lol:

About working at apple, after talking with some ex-employees I can say working at cuppertino isnt as glamorous as it sounds. Since el jobso took office there are no skunkworks anymore, or at least not even near the number there used to be. Now when the big cheese has an idea the entire company has to focus around it, reason why many employees from before 1997 have decide to leave the company, since they cant no longer work around something that isnt jobs-aproved, or lacks a minimalistic white/black/silver design;-)

Thats the reason why, unlike macworlds of old, we dont see anybody on stage but jobs, and maybe Ive or some other exec. At the end is like if jobs was the only guy working there and doing everything...

Anyway, back to the console: jobs never liked VGs. Plus theres the fact that apple will never subsidize a product unless there a huge untapped market (appleTV). A game console as MS has seen is beyond deficitary (fuck I think the entire Xbox division is already 6 billions in the hole) and more and more looks like a long therm investment, meaning you wont get back the money on the first generation if you're a newcomer.

But on the other hand Apple is the only company I think could release a Wii competitor. And that console as we all know packs a sizable profit for nintendo on every unit sold.

Interesting how a group of games enthusiasts could even remotely disagree with someone (anyone) producing another games console. It gives us all something else to discuss, consider purchasing, slag off, enthuse about and ultimately pick up at knock-down prices when/if it lands on it's arse!

No matter how crap the console/gaming device, there's always one or two titles to redeem it, so Apple be my guest!

As a gamer I say "go for it", but from a business standpoint, unless they have a new type of business model never before seen in this sector, I'll say they should either wait until the nextgen or just cancell the project.

That or just try to rip-off the Wii, and hope that the "iPod creed" may pick up on this new console...

Will you give it a fucking rest  Nobody cares about how you think Nintendo is ripping off the world with the Wii. It's almost every day you make some sort of comment based on the price of the Wii. It's really starting to get annoying.

Yes, just like everyone "knows" Microsoft ripped off Apple :p
(just so you get it - Apple and Microsoft both saw the Xerox Star and ripped it off, just Jobs saw it first).

So - Wii is shiny white, DS was initially shiny white. But wait - PSP was available in white, PS2 was available in white, etc. etc. etc. Anything else they've 'borrowed' that no-one else has?

one word... pippen, apple has no say in the gaming community.

I have their iphone (great device)... best marriage of mp3/video & phone ever developed. However, in gaming they are light years away.

PSP Just got Skype (built into latest firmware) and soon they will sell a PSP bundled with the Mic/Headset as a skype bundle. So pretty damn close.

The Wii is a different business model, where the X360 is part of Microsoft's strategy to get into the living room and PS3 is Sony's key to secure the hidef video market against Toshiba's HDDVD.

If X360 or PS3 are deficitary is not the main problem since the profits will come from different sources, but the Wii only has games (yeah, VC is technically in the same area as common discs and carts) so nintendo cant go and lose their money on an expensive design, but that doesnt means they cant turn a profit either...

The question here is where would Apple be in this industry? they could do like MS since they're swimming in money these days, but if cuppertino is known for something that is killing anything that turns into debt or just doesnts performs as good as it was supposed to.

Good examples are Newton, the G4 cube and the G4 iMac which while cutting edge IMO, it was discarded (the design) with the G5, which then turned into X86 with no changes being made to the original G5's appearance, and even the last black&silver one is by far the less innovating generation as far as iMac goes.

My GFs car is white, was it designed by Ive?

You could've mentioned swedish designers or the Braun products of the 60s, or something like that.

So you said nintendo didnt take any design ideas from Apple? what about this from the 90s:

    [IMG][IMG]

    [IMG][IMG]

    And then theres the obvious:

    [IMG][IMG]

I'm talking about more than just color here: for the looks of it nintendo seems to be copying every design trend coming from apple a year after it was released.

Anyway, back to the topic: Apple is just securing some ideas like they always do. They have hundreds of patents and prototypes for stuff that never saw the light of day.

Also theres rumors about PSP2 having multitouch, and after Nokia's recent announcements I'll say Apple had enough with other companies ripping the iPhone...

Indeed, multifunction is no warranty that buyers will choose said product over the other. Just look how the PSP in all its glory has been defeated over and over by a console with lower specs and few alternative functions (DS).

Even DS's Opera browser sucks, yet you dont see people choosing the PSP instead.

I am really struggling to see how the Newton even remotely resembles an N64, or the G3 iMac (which came in a variety of colours other than clear & orange) was influential in relation to the AGB, other than playful colouring and a variety of SKU?

The Wii & iMac are similar in that they are rounded, sleek, white and the drawer mechanism, but the DVD mechanism is probably more likely to have been inspired by in car CD / DVD players, laptop mechanisms and the like and frankly it's a mini Sony PSX!

Arguable, but the others...nah, don't really get it! :-(

Maybe I'm a little slow, but I don't really see a correlation between the top two pictures...

Regardless, I'm not sure where I stand on the possibility of an Apple branded handlheld game system. If the Pippen is any indication of what Apple is capable of, then Sony and Tendo are safe. However, I think Apple is a different company than they were during the Pippen's release. Don't you think?

I guess in my mind, it depends on how its incorporated. If its an all-in-one device, as Phobia said, many kids will want one. I don't know, though, it could just as easily flop...

Makes things interesting though doesn't it?

The design similarities between the N64 and Newton arent as notable as with iMacG3/GBA or iMac/Wii, but theres some in the way the lines flow around the body, instead of being more edgy and boxy like most Macs at the time (1993) or the Saturn and PSX for that matter.

About the Pippin, Apple is almost completely different since 1997. So if they release a console I doubt it will be anything like that bandai partnership.

Apple Newton and N64?...The orange iMac and GBA are close. The orange/silver GBAs were never released though were they?

I think the news is hinting towards iPhone/iPod Touch gaming. Always seemed a bit odd how they didn't include a few games like the other iPods. The touch screen and WiFi combo could give them a nice platform to build upon, and the long-awaited SDK will attract developers.
Nokia are trying to bring back the N-Gage name with new gaming phones, and there are often rumours about a Zuneboy/Nintenphone. Apple would have a big advantage getting into the game early on with the iPhone.

Actually, the Cube Mac influenced the GC's design quite alot, but that's as far as it goes imo.

I'm sorry, but I was laughing at the comparison pictures - thinking it was someone backing up my prior influence statement - then I noticed you were being deadly serious.

Are you telling me you cannot tell the difference between colour and design? You found a picture of a tangerine iMac and a giant, non-release colour GBA and tell me that the design is the same?

As I said, there are many items copying Apple's 'shiny white minimalist' look (Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, Philips, Toshiba, Aiwa.. - hell, every electronics manufacturer caught the iCraze) but I would in no way go so far to say they are copycats. For a start, the Wii looks more like a in-car DVD player than an iMac.

Why dont you name all these examples? and minimalism isnt the only factor here...

The new Ngage isnt a line of phones or a dedicated unit for that matter, but software created to make games on different models with sometimes very different specs.

I've heard some stuff about a Zunephone meant to counter the iPhone, but nothing about gaming (plus in that case in would be more like a traditonal portable sporting the Xbox name).

Nintenphone? nope, althought I saw a docomo phone with two screens, one having touch capability.

All I know is that theres strong rumors about a SonyEricsson Phone, maybe with PSP guts.

On a side note, at this point in PSP's life they could release a phone version thats free with a contract. What does that mean? that to the eyes of many buyers out there sony is giving PSPs for free, and we all know how people love free crap:lol:

I also have iPhone and I must say it sucks in every phone part as it could. That phones was sell in Europe 10 years ago. I would :crying:a lot if I buy phone for 500 EUR and I even do not know how much character I wrote and if is 1,2 or 3 SMS. Do not mentionet that there is no SIM function at ALL. You can no copy your contact from/to SIM card. And thats with all iPhone/iPod think. Am I only one who spot that there is 6th or 7th generation of this device and non of them can make anything then New playlist 1,2,3,4,5,6.... and you can not edit them without computer?

Anyway back to games. I would say I tried every game which is on iPhone and 95% of them are just a tech demo, because you can not play them as you do not have any buttons. All the "new" ways of trying to control a game only with a "super multi-touch" display which is all but not precise, are useless.
A very good example is Open TTD which you can play on iPhone as well on Nintendo DS. And guess what you can play it with no probem on NDS, but not on iPhone as you can not control it properly.

If Apple will ever make a game console then would first have some games or they end as the others (Jaguar, Saturn etc.), because game sell the hardware in the first place.

They are more then welcome to try but failure is the only option, Apple hardly has the deep pockets of MS to float a platform out there and certainly not a portable one.

They know jacksh*t about gaming and should stay where they are strong. Jobs also is NOT a fan of video games.

Saturn wasn't a failed console. It sold millions and had over 1000 games released in Japan. That would be more when you count all the western titles that weren't released in Japan.. how is that a failed console? The Jag on the other hand...... How many games where released for that? Not even 100 as far as I know.

Apple has more than enough cash right now, so they can lose as much as MS did without going belly up like SEGA.

But that doesnt means they will tolerate it: Apple is known for killing any ideas that dont bring a profit.

What that means is that if this theoric console "fails" during the 1st and 2nd year theres a huge chance that Apple will put it to sleep, leaving the entire userbase SOL.

They've done it before, but the thing is Apple knows that as a newcomer it would need a miracle to get all the money back and even a profit with their first console, and leaving the userbase out in the cold would be a massive PR blow.

Thats why they havent released a console after the sucess of their home and portable devices IMO.

Remember, is not computer anymore, just Apple;-)
