I have an arcade a few miles from where I live that does quite well actualy. Its got many of the newer games like HOTD4 and Mario Kart Arcade GP, along with some slightly older ones such as Daytona 2, The Lost World, Metal Slug 5 (thats a few years old right?), and a handfull of the really old ones like Pac-Man and Galaxian. It's also got some neat monster (as in huge hydrolic-based) cabinets such as this one with four big (50'+) screen TVs and four Race cars hooked up side by side. I havn't tried it yet (their was a line last I was their) but the cars move all over the place as you turn/accelerate/crash/etc., and in all combined the cabinets for it are about maybe 50 feet accross. Theirs also a Huge stuffed Sonic and huge stuffed Tails (about 6-7 feet tall each) they have sitting over their ticket booth (the one for exchanging tickets for prizes), but sadly they're just decoration and can't be won. How do they stay in buisness though when no other arcade seems to be able to do the same? Simple: Half the building their part of is also a bar/resteraunt with no wall seperating the two, and this building is located in a particularly large mall. So about 1/3 the people their are kids whos parents are waiting on food, another 1/3 are people out on dates, and the last ones are just curious people that had seen the place while traveling about the mall.
Wow, speak of the devil...I was just in a Sega Gameworks arcade today... ...and it was empty...then again...it was about 4 in the afternoon...on a Teusday... I was mainly there applying for a job, but I took the opportunity, bought a card, and got my fill of Sega games. I started with Initial D 3 which i played against a gentleman (I won), moved to Crazy Taxi, and various other games... Yeah, it was empty...but had it been a Friday or saturday night, it would have been packed, and loud as fuck. I blame the decrease in popularity of arcades on the increased power and commonness of home consoles. Why compete in an arcade when you can compete at home?
One word - atmosphere. Just a shame that half the idiots live in a shoe box afraid to come out. Then again if you have idiots like we had in Liverpool back in the UK I can't say I blame them. I quite often take part in contests at my local Sega World. Got to the semi finals on Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune 2 the other month :icon_bigg Yakumo
Blur's got a point though, arcades used to be way more graphically advanced than what you had at home. Started to change when the Megadrive came out, Playstation era pretty much killed it. I've got no experience of arcades at all, really. Only £1 a play in service stations, never a particularly satisfying experience.
Question: Do US arcade machines still only cost a quarter a go? 'Cos it's £1 a time here (nearly $2)
No. The norm seems to be $1.00 for any of the deluxe machines (ie: HOTD4, Maximum Tune, Initial D3). Some older games like Xmen Vs. SF or that Namco Anniversary Ms. Pac-Man/Galaga cost 50 cents per play. Classic games (ie: from the early 80's or 90's) may be set up for a quarter per play, but it's getting harder to find arcades or establishments that actually have them on location.
Is that per play? Or do you get to continue for 1 gbp? Street Fighter 2 used to be set up that way in my area....50 cents to start, 25 cents to continue thereafter.
Per play i think. It was a while ago so i cant say for sure how much it was but i am pretty sure it was £2.
Damn what is it with today? scuzzo84 you carry on the spamming and a harsh word from the mods will be coming your way. This thread has nothing to do with politics!
I think he's referring to Lieberman since he was the politician that filled Jack Thompson's shoes back in the early 90s with the Mortal Kombat/Doom scandals, ie he hates violent media and spends his time campaigning to spoil the fun of consenting adults. He tried to shut down arcades as I recall. Bit of a tangent, mind.
This is the case all over Scotland, and I assume the entire UK. Nearly all slot/gambling machines and the occasional £1 a go dance machine. Not good at all, and I am sure the huge rise of the home console is to blame.
Aside from 6 flags, what other arcades are in the NJ/NE/NY areas? I'll be down there soon for 2 months and could do with an arcade gaming fix!
I'd have to agree. I remember playing SFII on the arcade and being blown away by multiple colors and more buttons. At the time I only owned an NES, so you can imagine what it would look like to an 8 year old kid! Now, the arcades aren't graphicly better than the current generation of consoles. Heck in fact, alot look alot less detailed. Granted, you can't have the same experience with a racing game sitting in a mock up of a car or gun, but the graphics is what drove me the most. I still do attend the local gameworks on the nights where it's $20 for unlimited gameplay until closing. I love to play this shooting game where the guns vibrate. I swipe the card twice, and use both guns to beat the game. EXTRA FUN!
why do you keep getting on me This thread does relate to politics, you just dont know because you havent read about it, maybe pick of MASTERS OF DOOM book, or google something Lieberman and McCain had a lot to do with getting arcades shutdown HERE AND in many asian countries
You made 2 posts about two politicians who many people dont really know by name or what they did 10 years ago. If you explained this along with your posts rather then "go beat up these two randoms" then we would understand. Posts need content so everyone knows what your talking about.
My house? lol. I havent a clue for any nice arcades where Im at, its disappointing really. Apart from one in each of the "local" malls, theres nothing grand around me. Then again, im not near a huge city or anything so.
Well if you are loking for large arcades the only thing I can point you towards is Dave & Busters. They are far from a nice multi floored Sega world or something, but they have a lot of variety and most everything new. I can't speak for all of their locations, but I hit the one in Philadelphia every so often and it never leaves me dissappointed. Oh and depending on where you are going to be in New Jersey, Philly could be damned close.
