Are these Modbo 4.0's...fake's or originals?.

Since all site/shops use stock photos of the Modbo, their is no way to to know if you are getting a legit Modbo 4.0.

Never had a problem with the Modbos I've installed but like Jinn said they're legit as they're going to get. Haven't had much luck getting the Mars Pro chips I have to save their settings though.

Just to point out - I have had modbos with the diode laser fix included that seemed legit as far as I could tell (saving settings also worked). But they were also slightly more expensive.

Maybe from his old stock but now all we carry is the 1.93 Modbo 4.0 and Modbo 750.

What was the point of 1.99 and 2.00 versions? I heard that they were supposed to be more compatible with SCPH-9000x versions?
There is so many information out there about those Modbos ... there are clones of clones of clones that were already cloned 5 times before ... and each of them comes with pros and cons.

For me, the only good Modbos are the 4.0 and 750 with FW 1.93 where the later (afaik) is a 1:1 copy of the 4.0 and yet I've heard it's more compatible with SCPH-9000x models.

Thats VERY confusing, we need to setup a guide with all known Modbos with their pros and cons and what to look out for. There are even "4.0 Pros" which can be identified by an extra "F" point. Those are DMS 4 Lite clones and yet they are sold and advertised as MI clones. They even come with a MI FW version printed on the PCB, no wonder resellers get confused as hell and people don't know what they are buying.

I actually only had about 10 of those, but the ones I installed I never had any issues with. At the time I was ordering all different chips for testing. I still have a bunch of Mars chips and other brands I never offered for sale - as I didnt like the fact they wouldnt save settings.

I doubt you will ever have an issue with it (My personal console has one in too) - but if you do, I am willing to replace it free of charge if the chip is the issue.

Here are some I have just opened, these I do not offer for sale as they werent suitable after my testing IMO.

    Edit:

Turns out I still have a few of the Modbo 4.0s that come with the diode fix. Unopened, correct lettering and settings save fine.

The issues with the 1.99 and 2.0 are power and boot rate. The problem will be more likely to happen in 79K PAL and up consoles. The 1.93 work perfect since the last official MI firmware was the 1.93.

Yeah but MI 1.93 never "officially" supported the later models. 1.99 and 2.00 obviously tried to do something better than the 1.93 Modbos ... decreasing boot rate or intruducing power issues can't be called an advancement :D
Afaik getting 1.93 Modbos to work on a 9000x system CAN work, but doesn't have to. Some say it's pure luck, especially PS1 support is a hit and miss on them iirc.

The Modbo 4.0, 750 1.93 work flawless in the 90k the problem is the 1.99 and 2.0. A lot of modders were moving from the Modbo 4.0 to Mars Pro or Duo Ultra because of the boot issue in the 90K. Later on was figures that the Modbo 1.93 will work flawless in the 90k.

On my PS2 90004 the settings save fine and it says Modbo 1.93 in the setting menu (not Matrix) but it doesn't play DVD movies(no DVD5, no DVD9, no DVD-R, nothing). I already ordered a new laser from China which should arrive soon. I hope this fixes my issues.
Wierd thing, it does boot games burned to the same type of DVD-R.

    @sanni
you need to force DVD playback by pressing O when booting the system or pressing reset twice.

That was a hardware problem. It was solved with a transistor to insulate the circuit and avoid the ACTEL CPLD from draining current from the chip enable pin of the ROM.

The integrated IOP core (inside the larger chip) on these new units was designed to detect current being drained from the bus and then stall boot if that was the case.

Thanks. After your post I tried all different buttons and DVD playback works perfectly when I disable the chip by holding the START button and then reset the PS2 once when it says Modbo disabled.

Pressing O or forcing the DVD-Video bootmode in the settings menu doesn't do the trick I have to disable the Modbo to boot DVD videos

    Does anyone recognize this behaviour?
Can I make a hardware switch to turn of the Modbo? Like cut his power wire or so? I mainly want to use the PS2 for DVD Video playback not for gaming since it's so small :)

Maybe I got a fake too?

Does this mod have to be applied to Modbos aswell? Or do they come equipped with that transistor?

That does not apply to modbo chips because they use a different CPLD and also they have a resistance with a higher value on the "W" point.

Is it known what CPLD Modbo uses? Can it be dumped ?

EDIT: BTW, I found the pictures I mentioned before, where the EEPROM (might) not be connected at all. This is a fake Modbo 4.0 with 1.99 FW:

Some say it might be a multi layerd PCB, but afaik the 3.3V for the EEPROM is connected directly with the solderpad next it on a real Modbo 4.0.
Here you can cleary see it has no connection at all and I don't think that going between layers to make that connection would make any sense.
