Like I said in the reddit thread from the person that had it, it came from Acclaim, likely sent to magazines. My Stargate game is identical.

eproms lose their charge over time, even with windows covered. Around 20 years off the top of my head.

Erase them and reprogram and they will work fine again

Funny it looks like 2 carts stacked together, never seen that before.

Yup that's what I'm afraid it'll happen to some of my carts... 16-bit era stuff is ancient now.

Dump them, can always program new eproms or the originals.

It's a single board inside, not a stacked cart.

Acclaim used to use a spare shell to cover the upper half of the board for simple practical reasons.

Sending a board through USPS was risky enough, even with bubble wrap.

Including the second shell ensured the game would arrive without being snapped in half.

Well I found my copy of the game and so far nothing, but I'm kinda flipping back and forth from inputs to test it. So may not be the best way of testing. I have only really made it pass the first door also lol. Also I can't open the cart since the person before me stripped out the screws so thats the first thing i need to figure out. As soon as I get it open I will post pictures.

You can probably find a rom to download of the release, then dump your copy. Then you just need to compare the checksum of the two.

It's just a guess on EPROM lifespan. Lots of arcade boards contain EPROMs, including OTP ones which are quite old but still holding up. I suppose ironically the OTP EPROMs actually could be removed and reprogrammed a second time to restore their data/charge if it fades. I'd hope anyone with any unique development or prototype carts actually would dump them before the eprom data is lost. It'd be a shame for it to be gone forever.

Not eprom lifespan, but how long the charge will last on the gates. Which is why erasing them (i. E. Recharging the gates) allows them to work again

Having dumped many SNES era prototypes, I have to say that that statistic is overly pessimistic. Virtually all prototypes from that era that I have investigated were fine. The only ones I have encountered that did not work properly had clearly been abused in ways that were worse that just mere exposure to light.

Still, I think it is always prudent to back these up, which is no longer a difficult thing with devices like the Retrode.

As for this Acclaim prototype, I would not be surprised in the least if this was a near-final magazine review copy. Most prototypes are sourced from people who did not return them to the company after review. If you need to compare with the final version, there are always emulators, you do not have to actually buy the game (which is terrible).
