I have a friend who worked on it for a short while when he was pulled into the team late in its development. It was nowhere near 99% when it was wrapped up.

I haven't seen him for about 3 years but oddly enough I'm going to his home town tomorrow to see another friend. Should I bump into him I'll see if I can get any info out of him, no promises though, since he got married he doesn't come out much.

The entire Battlefront 3 situation really pisses me off. This is a game we all should've been playing years ago. I honestly can't believe LucasArts was that stupid. With the current popularity of online gaming, Battlefront 3 would've printed money. Easily.

Instead, they cancel the game for no apparent reason and hand it off to another developer to port to the PSP (Battlefront: Elite Squadron is basically a PSP port of Battlefront 3). Why the hell would I want to play Battlefront 3 on a PSP? It was cool to play Battlefront 2 on the go, but if given the choice, I would much rather play the console versions.

Battlefront 3 had a lot of potential. Being able to go from land to air to space at any point during battle was an awesome concept. I'd like to think that Disney isn't as stupid as LucasArts was, but their focus on casual and social gaming doesn't leave me with a lot of hope.

And now, here's a testimony from the dark side of the force:

    http://www.gamespot.com/news/former...-why-star-wars-battlefront-iii-failed-6400936

An anonymous source from LucasArts claimed that the 99% completion stated by Steve Ellis was "Bullshit". An estimate of the build was actually about "75% of a mediocre game". They believed that FR was using the money given by LucasArts for BF3 to help develop Ubisoft's "Haze". There were constant delays and the game simply did not look good.

Ellis responded to the anonymous source in detail:

    http://www.gamespot.com/news/free-radical-cofounder-responds-to-battlefront-iii-claims-6400991

According to Ellis, it was pressure from LucasArts to expand their company to simultaneously develop Battlefront 3 and 4 (!). The game was around 3-4 weeks of bug testing until completion when LucasArts pulled the plug. He (along with many fans such as myself) wonder why LucasArts didn't hand the game to someone else and let them release it, or simply let another developer start from scratch. After all, if the series is a huge money maker like the anonymous source said, why just can it for good? It makes no sense.

Every employee I have talked to has said that it was months from completion.

"It was 75% of a mediocre game.' Again, false. Until very recently there was a gameplay video on YouTube that showed exactly where the game was. It was leaked by people who were very proud of the game that they had spent over 2 years developing and wanted the world to at least have an opportunity to see it before it was consigned to history. Unfortunately, four years on, LucasArts have chosen to have the video removed. Objectively though, the game was 'content complete' and we were fixing bugs. At that stage in development, the way that completion is measured is by looking at the number of open bugs in the database. These are tracked and people spend a lot of time analyzing the fix rate and the rate of discovering new bugs and projecting a completion date when the game will be ready for release. At the time that the development on BFIII was stopped, the figures showed that we would close our 'must-fix' bugs with 3-4 weeks. So yes, maybe on reflection 99 percent was a little of an exaggeration. I probably should have said 97 percent or 98 percent."

Was he just being extremely optimistic, or is he stretching the truth?

He is stretching, again according to the handful of employees I have spoken with. Whether or not it is true I dont know, as I havent see the final product.

I want to believe Ellis, but now that I think about it, it seems incredibly stupid to cancel a game 97-99% of the way completed for literally no reason. Even if the game was mediocre, it still would have made LucasArts big money just to release it as is and likely would have covered the development costs. If it was months away, then around 75% actually seems like a fairly reasonable estimate. If that's the case, then that would at least be a plausible reason for LucasArts to cancel the "mediocre" game and continue with a better dev team. But it seems they haven't done that either.

Borman, I don't know if you've read the articles thoroughly yet, but which source sounds the most accurate judging by what you've heard? Or are they both right to a certain degree?

Ellis is generally the most inaccurate. The fact is that the game was coming along, and it wasn't bad. But 4 weeks from completion? No. I think the smallest estimate I heard from an employee was 4 months. The game worked, it was playable and all that, but there was a lot left to be done. Things weren't perfect, and while generally feature complete, that did not mean that things always worked as they should.

Hmm, that's unfortunate. The only thing that seemed mediocre to me was the campaign (I also thought the same thing of BF2, and I love that game), but I don't think that's the reason most people wanted to play it. The actual gameplay appeared solid, and I personally loved the concept they were going for.

That reminds me, anyone remember a few months back when Battlefront 3 files were found on the disc of Resident Evil: Raccoon City? Were the pictures real, or was it proven to be fake? If real, does that mean that Slant Six is currently developing it? I don't want to get my hopes up, but I've also been wanting a true console Battlefront for years.

    EDIT: These pics -

I remember looking for the files on a 360 copy I got from redbox, but couldn't find them anywhere.

    So the pics are fake?

If they're not making it, then who is?

I haven't heard of anyone making it yet, not that it is impossible. I never did confirm whether those were real for sure, but the fact is that they already weren't making it at that time, from what little I have heard. And it likely wasn't Battlefront III anyway. I have no inside knowledge from Slant Six though.

I did a little research (what a concept) and found out that Slant Six was developing Battlefront Online until it was cancelled in 2010. Those pics are most likely leftovers from that game, not Battlefront 3.

Slant Six isn't making it, Spark Unlimited isn't making it, so now what? Is it being developed by someone else? Will it be a next gen game? Has LucasArts given up on the franchise? Does Disney have any say in the matter? Is this game cursed? So many questions left unanswered. I wish LucasArts would actually address the issue and explain just what in the hell is going on. An anonymous source explaining why the original game was cancelled isn't what I'm talking about. We're not given any current info from LucasArts so every E3 we're left to think "Is this the one? Will they announce BF3 this time?", but they never do. They always announce some other Star Wars game, but never Battlefront 3. It's getting old, and I'm getting tired of it.

Its weird that a game that was almost gold hadn´t an announcement, sounds like they wanted to announce just 5 months away from the release, but even games like this probably won´t be 99% complete.
