http://www.megagames.com/news/html/pc/halobetaforpcleaked!.shtml Very first Google result for "halo pc beta". It's not too interesting though, considering it's just a beta of the PC port.
On the FFX thing, Im fairly certain thats how the disk was labeled, me being slightly in the know on this one heh
It's a localization build. Alpha -> Beta status refers to the localization testing/progress and not the development of the game. Pretty common to treat something as alpha all the way up until it's "complete" and then hope that when you go beta you can instantly go to Release Candidate (assuming no bugs show up during beta)
It would be nice to lay hands on the original Halo Mac version, which was shown even before the title switched to Xbox development. Although I think that there's probably not much storyline-wise to expect at that point. Also, I wonder if a version of Halo2 with all the cut content exists, the game seemed like they didn't have enough time to finish it all and cut a lot of stuff out. On the special edition making of DVD, there are also some scenes shown that were not in the final game and I think I remember them talking about how it was all a bit rushed at the end.
I just assumed it was labeled wrong. Considering that a lot of people call demos betas, I figured that someone got an actual beta and used the same "promote it 1 coolness rank" logic.
Well, there's also the fact that a lot of companies release demos of games that are in a alpha/beta stage. See: Carmageddon
Wasn't Halo originally an RTS like Bungie's Myth series? That would definitely be interesting to play.
Sonic 2 Simon Wai beta.Just plain epic. Half - Life 2 Alpha was great too. Sonic X-treme test build These are my favs.
No, as far as I know it was always a shooter from the time it was into production - a successor to the original Marathon series. I don't know if there are any RTS videos from the "old" halo out there. This is some of the oldest footage I could find with a quick search:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebI5lkLRTdg Pretty good for a 1999 game on Mac (which wasn't really known as a gaming platform back then) Edit: Here's the original Macworld-Video that blew our minds: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2obYHzJ3n8
"The first vision of Halo was basically Myth in a sci-fi universe. There even exist builds of the game, where you control marauding marines in a real time tactical 3D environment, complete with vehicles that would come to be known as Ghosts and Warthogs. It actually looked kind of fun." So yeah, at the very start it was an RTS. I wonder if any of those old builds still exist somewhere...
I have an old zip drive label/sticker for the media that has the halo screen shot(id all most bet the farm) with a alien grunt on it. yet this was before xbox was released. Its stuck to my tool box now
The start of this video has some footage of the rts build. This is from Halo 2 SE. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RN9vO_gRzoI
That's great! The earliest build looks almost exactly like Myth, I wonder if they used the same engine...
