Probably going to get killed for posting this sort of thread, but as the title said, what was the most impressive and playable mario game ever? For me it's Super Mario World, as it's got a wonderful learning curve, it's challenging, has more secrets and hidden stuff then you can shake a stick at, has great replay value, some fantastic music and is probably the pinacle of 2D gaming and even now I still want to whip out a Super Famicom and whack it in. If only my copy wasn't the other side of the world :crying:
Should have been more specific to platform games, although I think Super Mario Kart was the cleanest and most fun of the single player games.
My initial reaction was Super Mario Bros, however, I do agree that Super Mario World pretty much has it all. So many things to find and so many wonderful memories.
ah! torn between playability, nostalgia and childhood memories!!!!! so..believe it or not I cannot possibly say which one I prefer :S this is so confusing!!! I love all my mario games, including the portable versions, way too much!! Gameplay wise they re all top-notch thanks to the controls. The latest 3D challenge for me has been Galaxy which I adored, for different reasons obviously to those of Mario 64. In the 2D departmet I think Mario Bros 3 closely followed by Super Mario World win my adventurous side. In terms of a quick yet stimulating gaming experience, Super Mario Bros wins hands down.
Well, I'm a huge SMB3 fan (I've been playing it since I can remember), so my choice is more than obvious. No matter if I have teh-next-gen-amazing-graphics-best-game-evah, I'm always going back to SMB3 after some time. (this happens to me with the Megadrive Sonic series too ¬_¬) It can be closely followed by SMW, but for some reason I never liked it a lot, maybe because I find it similar to SMB3 in lots of stuff or something, I'm not really sure...
Me too, on one hand mario 3 was the first game i ever played, but super mario world was the first snes game i owned (the first snes i played was megaman X). They both are excellent and fun to play, so i don't want to choose which one is better.
Galaxy took me back to the good 'ol days. It was such a good gaming experience. Any game that can do that in this day in age deserves my vote.
While all of the Mario (main) games have been excellent... I picked World as it seemed to tweak the updates the SMB3 had inplemented and increased the size of the world (and secrets)... to a point of near perfection.. Great Great game!
Yeah what about it? Crap 3D graphics that scale badly, extra lives that come far too easily, to the extent that certain places you gain an extra life so if you die later in the stage then you can get another one... The worlds are too clear so it doesn't have the hmm how much do I have to go feeling in SMW... It has some nice ideas but overall the game is badly executed.
it's a nice and pleasant light-hearted mix of SMBros and some later titles. Finding all the secret items is the real deal, not getting thru the levels. It stands its own but I much prefer Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, and don't get me started over Super Mario Land 3: Wario World (best fucking platformer on a handheld!!!) the VB version is nice too=)
I actually have more of a spot for Super Mario 3. Super Mario World was one of my first Mario games I actually beat, but I liked 3 better. Its probably nostalgia, but I liked the varying worlds in Mario 3 a lot more than the levels in Super Mario World.
Also, on the subject of Mario 64... The first time I played it I was amazed by the gameplay mechanics but I was very dissappointed in that it didnt really remind me of a Mario game. - the caps were time-limited, which I hated - there was no lugi - you couldn't ride Yoshi (Although Sunshine ruined that for me with its gimmick) - The enemies weren't really an issue , they were there for decorative purposes to say the least - The levels didn't have any pipes to go in and out (except for Tiny Huge Island) In retrospect, we all love mario64 because it was a pioneering game , especially gameplay-wise - it wasn't much of a Mario title however in terms of content. Galaxy addresses the issue of "what is mario?" much better this time around, although I d still kill for a SMB3/Marioworld looking (you know the odd mountains and the funky levels etc) 3D Mario adventure! For the record, Mario 64 DS was so much better in some ways, that I wished I had played it the first time around instead of Mario 64 on the n64 - mainly for having 4 characters.
I'd go for the gba remake of super mario 3 it's the best version out of them all, with the e-reader stuff added it has 32 new levels, plus extra game rules to make it interesting like swapping easier enemies out for harder ones while giving a x2 on everything, or putting the clumps of grass in from mario 2 so you can chuck veggies at stuff. close second is super mario world so many secrets & extras it was a truely great game.
