Thanks for the links! I just ordered one. Yeah, but it's better than using a shitty SCART cable. I think official component cables are probably easier to find than official SCART cables. I already had one, anyway.
Dunno about the BEST, but I prefer my PSOne over my regular PS1 simply because my PS1 is noticeably blurrier on my CRT TV with the same AV cables. I'm guessing this isn't an issue with SCART cables but since I live in Canada, there's no such thing.
SCPH-1002 (with a swapped drive from a 900x series), Modchip, RGB on an Amiga 1804S monitor and a 2:1 stereo system wired manually. That's my setup and it can not get any better than that http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QPsdxR0zzNE
According to this post there are some graphical differences between the earliest systems and the later revisions: http://www.assemblergames.com/forum...w-S-Video-port&p=175238&viewfull=1#post175238 And on the Japanese wiki for the PlayStation it lists the early models as having a GPU with the model number CXD8514 compared to the later versions having a CXD8561. http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_(ゲーム機) (scroll down) I have seen some other references saying that these GPU's may change the draw distance for fog a bit between games. This is a very slight difference, but I can't help but personally think of the earliest models as being the "real" PlayStations, and I prefer them.
I prefer my SCPH-1000, but also have a SCPH-5500 ad a SCPH -1001. The SCPH-1001 has a cleaner sound with less fuzz while the SCPH-1000 is close to it. The SCPH-5500 is pretty good and has a tiny bit of fuzz of the sound. All three are chipped to play imports although my SCPH-5500 seems to have issues with FMV's and streaming audio. Both can skip sometimes so I don't know why. The SCPH-1001 and SCPH-1000 are a ton more stable and are going strong. I have replacement drives, PSU's, and other components on hand in case of any failures. I also have one of the Net Yaroze systems that I bought with a defective lens, so I replaced it and it works perfectly. I love the black finish and it's awesome how it plays all regions.
I really have to say 9002 or 7502, I got my first 9002 in 2002 / 2003 and used it regularly from 2002/3 - 2006, and primarily 2002/3 - 2004. So yeah, never stopped working and I THINK it still works, not sure which one it is as i have 18x ps1s But yeah, 900x ftw. LONG LIVE 900x! Edit: Found my #1 .. It works but has those weird ass sounds. :/ Same as with no #3.
100x it's the worst series! Have overheating problems and hardware bug... The only positive thing it's the audio!
It's absolute not a myth. There are a lots of BIG difference bettwen the various model of motherboards. An example it's the DAC used. On earlu models there's a better quality DAC...
I have the parallel I/O port model, it allows R/F output and high quality audio I think. not 100% sure but i've got one, great condition and still has the backplate/cover for the output. I picked it out of 7 ps1s that I own to make sure i got the best one before failing to sell the others on lol
Early model uses DAC K4309 VM and have a better audio set up, last models uses shit AK4309 BM or unknows crappy model and audio output quality it's horryble and "flat". Also audiophyle people "kill" scph 100X models for HI-FI stereo use because it's one of the best ever (if not the only) consolle with best audio output quality. In fact 100X model are rare because this idiot people with their inexperience and stupidity destroy the motherboards trying modifing and improving their output quality audio (burning the tracks, destroing other components with solder ecc ecc)...
The audio output is not much better on the early models at all, so it's more myth than fact. I'm an audiophile and I use expensive gear. My DAC alone is $1,500, so I think that's proof enough. If I'd have to rate the SQ of early models, it'd be in DAC's of the $50 range. Not $1,000 good at all.
