I've been wanting to mod my Xbox since I got it, three years ago, but haven't had the time and was always unsure of what to do. I know there are multiple methods and many recommend the game one, but I'm having trouble even finding a copy of the right games. For example I purchased Mech Assault only to find, to my displeasure, that it was a platinum hits version. Ebay seems to only sell platinum hits for the other games and I'm always worried about buying one. I also know about a hot swap method, but I don't think newer desktop machines allow this? Do they even use parallel cords? (if they use them, the only tutorials I found for them were video ones that were of very low quality). Does anyone know of an easy method for soft modding an original Xbox? Perhaps I should ask the marketplace in the forums that I wish to purchase one of the three games?
Actually, I just ordered the USB to Xbox Controller Port adapter and I found one of the black label games on ebay for ten bucks. I'll just use that method, way safer.
Easiest way is via a memory card/usb pen & the game. Second easiest is hot swapping the hdd & manually transferring the save file (via xplorer360 app) & using the game. Third is using XBHDM, requires you to hotswap & no games required, but it can be a pain in the ass to get the computer to see the hdd if you don't have compatible components, ie, ide ports or the supported Sata controllers. I would go for Splintercell or 007 to do the softmod, as MechAssault only the original release version is compatible, everything released after wont work. all versions of splintercell work & all but the last run of 007 disc work. (getting one of the non working 007 disc is like winning the lottery) Also for new comers to softmodding I made this, it's designed to be simple & piss easy to use. 2014 Softmod kit & extras disc v1.1
Both Hex and I have tutorials on soft modding - Hex1gon's https://www.youtube.com/embed/UqTjxuYQflM and mine Edit: I can't embed two videos apparently :/
is it possible to connect the Xbox (still unmodded ) to my computer via an Ethernet cable (or I'm told Crossover Cable) and transfer the files that way? I did order the USB device, but I don't feel like waiting a month!
Thanks Can we flash with Xcalibur disc after softmod. This method can run with a xbox with corrupted bios?
No you can't.. You can either chop up a break away cable and make a USB adapter or use XBHDM using an older PC Depends, can the xbox still boot a game? Do you mean BIOS or HDD? Corrupted HDD can be easy fixed, a corrupted BIOS on the other hand, is a whole other beast....
Well, I haven't even soddered things before, I've been meaning to give it a try on simple projects so I can get the hand of it, but I looked up the tutorial on making the cable and it looks like something one could easily screw up. Not a big deal to screw up, but I suppose I'd rather wait for my cable from China. By the way, I'm way behind on knowledge when it comes to hacking the original Xbox. I've heard of different bios's, region free mods maybe and other crazy changes. But I also heard about adding more ram to the thing, what purpose does this serve? Is it for Homebrew only? Or will certain games benefit from it? (I know this is unlikely, but I've heard crazier things...)
Splicing doesn't require soldering. Just twist the wires together and insulate them with electrical tape. Also (not needing to de-solder them) it's easier to reconstruct the breakaway cable when you're done (transferring the softmod file from your PC).
Really? Huh, well maybe I'll try it if I get impatient. Does it matter what controller port is used? I have this one accessory that plugs into the Xbox controller port which you would plug in a mic I think? I have no use for it and wouldn't mind trashing it. Also, know any tutorials for doing it? The ones I found had you soldering stuff for some reason.
That can't possible be that simple. Where do I cut? Do I simply take a female to whatever USB cable and cut part way down the wire, then take a controller port cable, do the same then twist up all the wires? It will work just like that? Don't they have to be the same colored wires?
