Well, the ol' Bomberman is making a comeback on the Xbox 360. They just had to make him look radder, cooler, and more techno-ish. Makes me wonder, though. Are some game companies getting too banal and using the same character and design over and over? *cough* Nintendo *cough* Would you find the Mario games more appealing if he looked more realistic, more itense and a more dramatic storyline. And the Goombas and Koopa troopas looked like this? Maybe they should just get rid of the name bomberman and make it its own game. Names and looks get stale after a really long time, you know. Looks like the same gameplay from older Bomberman titles was put in this game, too. What do you guys think of this change?
Ok... but how is this design better? I'd much rather see the real Bomberman than some banal generic robo-suit design. He looks like any other current and next gen high tech character now. When are Hudson Soft going to realize that Bomberman only works in overhead views and in multiplayer mode? Some games just don't translate into "real 3D" properly. Sonic is another (IMHO).
If they made a mario game off of that concept art that would kick ass. Definitely a twist from what Nintendo normally does. I can imagine parents getting pissed tho when they get their innocent 5 and 6 year olds it based purely off of the name. It would be interesting to see.
What is more banal? Using the same design over and over from previous years? Making a new design? Actually, the gameplay was set in a 3/4 view overhead. It looks like the old ones, to an extent.
Interesting... Well bomberman was getting tougher and tougher, though the leap from jetters to this is quite remarkable! I think there is always a place for the simpler design, and obviously this design with lots of edge. As for the use of an existing license to make a game easier to market. Would the article above have packed as much punch if it was not such a shocking design for a cute little chap like bomberman? Though I do find it very interesting, this combination of a violent, aggresive design with a traditionally cute character. It does make the design even more agressive than it would have been without the link to the bomberman series. I personally think bomberman was getting a little strained, it peaked a good while ago imho. This potentially gives bomberman a new image while paying respect to a good old school franchise. (or pisses all over it - we will have to wait and see.) I personally think they should have used a new name - I like bomberman. I don't want to see him in that weird armour fetish gear shown above (complete with chains and gas mask-esque helmet). Though this game, bomberman or not looks like it could be something slightly different - ironic considering it is bomberman! Would we have been happier to see another cute version of bomberman on yet another console? This new aggresive flavour? Or none at all!
Yeah exactly. The new guy is more like Fistingman rather than Bomberman. We need completely new ideas, not rebranding of the same old ones.
I am not very happy with the new style of bomberman for both this & the PSP game (the style for the psp bomberman is total ass, this is so so). Anyways I think it's great hudson is trying a new aproch insted of rehashing a straight bomberman. Hopefuly this will be better then the bomberman games on the gamecube (I though they all sucked). Regarding the name. I think they should give it a new name but sub title it boberman so to make it apparent it's a rebirth of the series. Like example "Super Crazy Guy with Bad Gass: Bomberman 360" Either way the old cute japanese style characters of the series will always have a special place in my memories (i'm a huge fan of the bomberman series). Also minor note. There is a second page to this article which shows that the game offers 2 view modes. A - Classic (like the 2d bomberman games) & B - a revised 3rd person close camera view (actualy this view tried to make an apperance in previous bombermans but was scrapped i think).
I think that look terribly sexy. Heh, maybe I should get the 360, I do rather enjoy the Bomberman series. Hmm....
In most cases im against major artistic departures in tried-and-true franchises, but in this case im actualy really liking what I see. The Bomberman franchise has been stale in my mind for a good long while, so a dramatic change like this can only be good.
this is a case of a company not knowing the role of a franchise. bomberman always was a softer franchise with nice pick up and play gaming. Its good times were mostly seen when you had friends over and played on the genesis with the squirrel nest of cords from the multi tap in your floor. I hate to judge games before I even see a video of them, but this just looks like the endless other shit games trying too hard to be hard...
Graphic overhauls and new character designs are great... Until you realize that the game has the same underlying feel. How long is it going to take you to realize that this is just the same old thing with a new haircut? And to answer the mario question. I'd rather have them keep pumping out endless mario branded shite than insult my intelligence by trying to hide him behind a cool new look. If a given company has a solid idea for a game and already has an established face to place on it, does it really matter whether they use it or not? Nintendo could buy the rights to this new Bomberman, replace him with Mario, and call it Mario Bomb Stomp and if it's good then it's good regardless.
Awh...but this new bomber man probably won't get the cool cute custom bomber options like in previous instalments. I don't think the new look is good for a bomberman game, I agree they should have made it more of a deviation from regular Bomberman then calling it the new Bomberman. I get enough realistic explosions and mechas in 90 odd percent of every game I play, part of the charm of Bomberman was that while everything is blowing up and dying it's not like it was gruesome.
WTF?!?! Add Hudson to the list of companies that've sold out. They're somewhere between Konami and Taito now.
Just kill Bomberman. I'm against updating the look of a game to sell to the "new generation." Make a new game. What's next? Bub and Bob from Bubble Bobble as beefy dragonmen who spit out disgustingly glistening mucus blobs to envelop androids and cyberwizards in a post apocalyptic world?
Err...Reading the first 2 posts and seeing the picture I actually thought this was a joke..like, give me back my cuddly little Bomberman
Yeah. It's disappointing to see yet another company take an old franchise and make it "edgy" in an clearly desperate attempt to appeal to that elusive youth demographic. I'm sick of being so blatantly targetted. I was in a supermarket yesterday and noticed that Heinz have released a series of "MEAN BEANZ" flavoured beans with bad attitude to the max. Baked beans, ffs.
Actually Konami are at the top in my eyes. Once they coul ddo no wrong but these days it's all about the money. Bloody Konami sports club my arse ! yakumo PS: Do think much of the new bomberman image myself. Should have dropped the bomberman name.
