Currently reading 'MIT Platform Studies - Chasing The Beam: The Atari Video Computer System'. Previously, was reading Good Omens by Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman.
Hey, me too. Tried it when I was 14 and didn't get far, giving it another shot to try and understand the whole "cyberpunk" thing. Just finished "The Race for a New Game Machine". The author is a dick, the book reads like a motivational manual for managers. It's rammed full of tedious buzzwords and "shoot for the stars to fulfil your dreams" kind of crap. However, the guy did orchestrate the design of the PPC core for the Cell CPU and had a fair influence on the 360's CPU as well, so there's a lot of interesting shit in there if you can put up with his style of writing. Mostly though it's just incredible IBM ever allowed him to write it; it's a frank and detailed look into life as a chief IBM engineer, and he doesn't pull any punches. For a corporation who are so well known for their ridiculous NDAs it's amazing it ever got ok'd for publishing. Someone mentioned Descartes, I loved "cogito ergo sum" and scepticism as a whole. Can't say I cared much for Nietzsche, though.
RIP J.D. Salinger - he just died a couple of weeks ago. Catcher in the Rye was okay, but "Franny", "Zooey", "Raise high the roof beam carpenters" and "For Esme with love and squalor" were all far better books imho.
James May's Car Fever, and Jezza's "On Cars"... Issigonis: An autobiography... Mini: 50,... Killing Hitler and Inside Hitler's Bunker: Last days of the 3rd Reich... Ryan
Right on! Finished it again for the fourth time in January. One of my all-time favourites, definitely! Currently been reading Paul Theroux' The Old Patagonian Express on and off, I'm just a rail-travel nut as he is but I find the man's effete, even condescending style of narrating somewhat tiring. Between that I'm progressing through Paul Krugman's The Return of Depression Economics, 2008 edition. A very accessible book on recent economic history, and very well-written. Oh, and occassionally I grab Stephenson's Snow Crash off the shelf for some chuckles :110:
I think these are it: http://www.amazon.com/Killing-Hitler-Roger-Moorhouse/dp/0553803697 http://www.amazon.ca/Inside-Hitlers-Bunker-Third-Reich/dp/0374135770 Cheers Ryan
Just finished The Chronicles of Pern: First Fall and Dragonsdawn. It's been ages since I've read any of the Dragonriders of Pern books (and then only a few of them and in no particular order), and am now reading them in story chronological order (the books are released out of order).
Contrary to Popular Belief by Joey Green The C Programming Language by Brian Kernighan and Dennis Ritchie M68000 Family Programmer's Reference Manual by Motorola Inc. (I am almost always reading those last two =P)
How to Learn Any Language by Barry Farber It's a fun read and already helped me a lot. Also: Remembering The Kanji I by James W. Heisig THE classic for study of the Japanese language.
New library acquisition thanks to my lovely boyfriend and the wonderful excuse of Valentine's day. House and Philosophy: Everybody Lies (http://www.amazon.com/House-Philoso...=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1266243363&sr=8-1) Love it!!!
Once I finish reading the HOUSE and Philosophy book, I'll move on to DYNASTY OF EVIL, the last one in the Darth Bane Series.... OHOHO
The Wall Street Journal and Denver Post every morning, Wired Magazine every month, gizmodo and lifehacker daily, was reading the Martian Chronicles and was reading Born on a Blue Day by Daniel Tammet(I strongly recommend this autobiography), I read on FoxNews.com about once a week and that's about it.
I've just finished DARTH BANE: Dynasty of Evil.... I want to kick the author in the head... I will not spoil the ending because someone might want to read it here, but man, I HATE IT when authors do stupid things at the ending of book sagas. He's got the same virus or something, that caught Stephen King when he wrote the ending of THE DARK TOWER series... I just want to slap him in the face
Just finished "God's Demon," by Wayne Barlowe. http://www.godsdemon.com/ Great book, very engrossing story, and gross imagery throughout - Demons wearing "soul" skin, decorating themselves with organs, people getting eaten by Moloch, people getting turned into human bricks, into paper, into demonic steeds, into large dinosaur-like war animals, large battles of demons fighting, decapitating each other, getting thier guts ripped out, speared with pikes, people getting eaten alive by flies, plus the ending has this gigantic Gregori demon burst from the ground Godzilla-style and just lay waste to everything in it's path, excellent. They should make this a movie. Plus, the guy is an excellent artist.
