Pro tip to all involved: don't buy used Christmas presents! Jesus! If something is still in production how about not being a cheapskate and forking out for a new one 'burst into tears' - sure, whatever; he should have no concept of even the right or wrong of the material involved - also maybe if skinflint parent was so keen on buying a second user item for his son, he should have at LEAST tested it first.

    parent blamed - panic averted.

1 - Find porn picture on the interweb
2 - Put onto second hand device
3 - Call media up saying that your x year old child found porn on device
4 - Company you bought it from will give you freebies
    5 - Instant win...

I remember in the olde days of CEX, some one claimed that we had put in a porn video cd into basically a brand new copy of a a crap Playstation game of Tama (this was a Japanese import a weeks after the Japanese release so it was 90 pounds and we had sold out of Ridge Racer.....) and was demanding his money back and 500 pounds compensation. I think we told him to go jump off a cliff, even though he was threatening to report us to the police for selling a game but was hardcore porn that their child saw, although we pointed out that the Playstation could not play video CDs... funnily enough he never came back and we did not hear from the boys in blue.

I feel bad for the boy, but I'm finding it difficult to find sympathy for the father. Should GameStop have done a better job looking for images like that before selling it? Certainly. But stuff like that is what happens when you buy USED technology. If the father didn't properly inspect it before giving it to his 5 year old son, that's on him. For fucks sake, it has a camera built in. That should be a red flag for parents to inspect the device for inappropriate pictures before handing it off to their kids. But I guess that would require good parenting, and we can't have that now can we?

And him crying about it reeks of "Waaah! We've suffered! Give us money for the trauma we've endured! Waaah!" It's clear he saw this as a way to get an easy paycheck and rolled with it. I imagine the boys been traumatized more by the drama the father is creating than by the images themselves.

Did it never occur to you that children may watch this??

You should put a good portion of childporn on it as well.

IF the store didn't wipe the unit properly, then that's some poor standards. When I worked in retail, we checked every single console that came in was fully functional BEFORE buying it... and then wiped it before it went out for sale. There's no way this would have happened with a proper procedure for used goods in place.

However, I agree with Jamtex - sometimes, it'll just be people after free stuff. Look at that PSP link someone posted above... the woman bought a second hand unit with a memory card apparently, and wants a new PSP. Surely it's just the memory card that's the problem in that case? I'd say she was trying it on, for sure.

I wonder if the author wrote this article on their Microsoft, while listening to music on their Apple.

If they didn't wipe the memory I hope they at least wiped the 3DS chassis... haha!

    But yeah... who

    a) trades in a console without removing their personal info
    b) doesn't check the product before reselling
    c) doesn't check the preowned product before gifting

All are equally liable IMO and I don't really understand the need for media coverage or freebies.

Oh no, my child accidentally saw a boob! Better buy him Call of Medal of Honor: Jingoistic Military Worship 6 to make up for it, because using fetishized military hardware to blow brown people to pieces will not affect his development nearly enough as seeing naked people!

Stores here don't wipe data on used devices. Many times I've seen 3DS with people's photos, and iPhones iPod etc with photos, music what not. Many places just can't be bother with the functions.
The previous owner clearly didn't care, and who cares if a child saw it, who wouldn't test the device before giving it to your child? If you're not sure how to use the damn thing, ask the store to show you it works.

I may not understand this whole "problem" with this article, but like Jamtex said where's the proof?

This is just like the time I bought my HD2 a few months ago, the previous owner stated on the auction he'd reset to factory before being sent. When I got the phone, all his contacts, live info, saved passwords were all there still. I'd be worried if that was my accounts in someone hands. I could access all his accounts including his email, ebay and many other services. I probably should of order a blow up doll on ebay for him :p but really people, reset/format your fucking devices.
