Bungie was like, so late home last night, so like, Microsoft totally dumped him!

    It means that microsoft no longer gets to treat them as a cash machine, and the programmers will get rich and benefit from their labors.

    Watching MS make 300 million while you make $65,000 a year HAS to burn.

    The rumours are that Bungie's development team were going to walk out and start a new company, so Microsoft had little choice if they wanted to keep them on board for future titles.

    well you can also see how Rare is different now than it was on the n64. They pretty much had the whole perfect dark/goldeneye team leave to form their own thing. Nintendo dumping them looks good now, as they haven't done shit worth what MS gave them. It also took the whole xbox generation for them to even put out a relevant game, which turned out to be leftover xbox games pushed back to 360 launch. Yay!

    The developers MS dumped are still very capable of making good games for other consoles. The US gamers loves racing, sports, and halo. PGR is a fun series that can now be born in some form on the ps3.

    Untrue and unfair. Rare didn't have anywhere near the whole XBox generation to create software for the XBox. They came in half way through a short console lifespan, had several games close to release (after recoding them from the GC) and Microsoft pulled the plug on the XBox in favour of the XB360, forcing Rare to once again recode their software for another platform. That was down to Microsoft. Not only was this the case, Rare also had to rush the work to get them ready for the XB360 launch window.

    We haven't heard much from them since, presumably because they are busy at work on a new title. Microsoft played far too much for them, but that was down to Peter Moore and his attempt to get better development onboard to bolster the XB platform.

    Rare is currently working on 3 titles. The new Banjo Kazooie, Viva Pinata Party Animals, and one unannounced game (which I'm hoping is Killer Instinct 3).

    In so far as Rare's offerings thus far:
    1. Conker's Bad Fur Day Live and Reloaded is still the best looking game on the Xbox. And while it is a remake, its a pretty cool game. Multiplayer (which was the focus) sucked though.

    2. Grabbed by Ghoulies is horrible and was obviously rushed.

    3. Kameo is f'ing awesome. I don't care what anyone says. It was a damn good game.

    4. Perfect Dark Zero's single player was good, but not great. The multiplayer is where it shines though.

    Viva Pinata Party Animals has nothing to do with Rare it was outsourced to Krome down here in Australia :p

    As someone said. Viva Pinata Party Animals is out sourced and not done by rare. :)

    Sadly conker still is probably one of the best games on the old xbox. Even for a remake rare definantly put a lot of work in getting this game out.

    :( I am probably one of the only people who liked GBTG. I think mostly because the game reaked of Rare charm but felt more like a quick tech demo to test out what they can do on the xbox hardware. So maybe thats why I somewhat like it. I personaly would not mind a sequal to GBTG being out sourced for DS/PSP. The series could posibly work well on thoes platforms.

    Kameo was nice but it's over use of normal maps gave me a headake. I can't play that game for more then 10 mins (LCD or CRT). :(

    PDZ felt like it needed time to be more polished. It felt slow and clunky compaired to most FPS.

    Lol, I kind of liked GBTG, although I can tell why people don't like it. I thought it was fun.

    Kameo, I liked. I get made fun of for having that and Viva Pinata, but whatever, there fun.

    PDZ I wanted to like, and it was ok when I got my 360, but I have a hell of a time hitting anything in it because I can't control it too well. It's all wierd, plus my hands are all wierd. I just didn't like how they made the charectars and stuff.

    I heard about this last night.

    Honestly I dont see anything good/bad with this since apparently MS still has Bungie by the balls, owning the Halo franchise and having exclusivity rights on new games (unless MS thinks otherwise and pass).

    The irony is that it was the best looking game on N64 too, and sucked on sales as well:lol: selling even less units than the original one!


    Anyway, kevin what you mean with $65k? as far as I know the average income for game programmers is around $110k.

    I d imagine that amount of money would go to some senior programmer/lead. 110K is a very healthy figure, the type of money you'd expect a doctor or lawyer to make (not the highest bound of course)

    Yeah... I wouldn't think game programmers would be making $110K... unless they were some sort of big name of something (i.e. Yuji Naka).

    Programmers make good money depending on the studio. I personaly am making shy of 60k but my problem is I spent most of my 6 years working on crap gba games. My former roommate works for a massive studio and makes more in the 70-80k and he is only a half year more experience then me (he gets more because he pushed more on console work).

    For me my sallary could go up if I moved on to another studio but I quite like being where i'm at plus i'm desperately trying to get 1 PSP game on my resume before I try moving on to high end ps3 stuff.

    Most coders I would say get between 60k-110k for thoes with 3-7+ years of experience. You get into the high 90-110k when you become leads (depending on the studio). Also producers get into the 110k+ range (some coders do transistion into producer rolls over the years).

    Sallary really comes down to
    1. The studio you work for (Big names pay more)
    2. Years of experience
    3. Games you've worked on (side projects are a big big thing to push you up the ladder faster).
    4. Location (Coder in California makes more then say someone in montreal, california is more expensive to live in).

    unfortantly I wouldn't come close to that even if they muliplied by 5 ;D
    but that's something to expect from "new"-started companies - I'm not doing it for the money but because I like it ^^

    I would love to get into the industry as a game designer, but honestly I dont like coding.

    I'm not bad at programming, but I dont like that lifestyle either (you know what I mean) since I've had some crunch-time in past with similar situations and I wouldnt like a job where that happens all the time.

    I'm looking for a more creative alternative, like level design, since thats something I really enjoy and several freelance level designers (as those who make maps for CS and UT) have eventually got into game design, either with their own teams or in medium-big studios.

    The kind of programmers that earn 110k a year are the ones that work 24/7 and live the job. Who wants that kind of life? If you work out the hours they put in, it's not that great a salary.
