If he just released the rom for free then the game itself could decrease in value if he ever wanted to sell it,now 2500 for just the rom is way to steep.

He's never asked any money for the ROM to be released yet. Not publicly anyway. It's still all up in the air, and calling people selfish just because you aren't getting free ROMs usually never helps anything, but rather deters owners of these things from sharing at all.

When a prototype's ROM is dumped and released, the value of the prototype decreases significantly. It's not that strange to hope for compensation for sharing. Afterall, usually prototypes cost the owner significant money to obtain.

Have you ever bought anything rare and expensive before? How would you feel if you spent $500/1000 on a cart and some guy said "rip the data for me for free and render that special purchase worthless". There's nothing inviting or endearing about internet randomers with an unjust entitlement complex. Arrange a collection to raise the money to release it to the public if you want to play it.

    The guy owes you nothing.

You didn't buy it, the dude bought it, so you don't have a say in how it's going to be released. You're not entitled to receive anything.

I'm just saying in what I though what was right, I know he is going to want money for the rom. I never said I would have a say in how its released, and I don't know why I would.

There's an even earlier version of the game up for auction right now on eBay.

Compare with this pic of the infamous Tara200 proto and you'll see the recent one is two months earlier!

This could be really interesting. Anyone that was going on about how you'd pay money for it, well, here's your chance. I think if a lot of us could get together and try to buy this together, then we'd have a better chance of winning. If we could get one person to receive all the funds and then bid(...me? :p), our chances are better. I personally pledge $300 of my own right now if anyone wants to join in. I'm not sure how to go about self-electing myself to receive funds so if anyone wants to figure out some way that makes you all happy, let's hear it. I just don't want to see our chance for this slip by and someone who doesn't share the ROM end up hoarding it.

Can you ask the seller for differences from retail, ask if they are willing to dump the ROM just to check the chucksum of the code (just to make sure it is different from retail), and/or open the cart and take pics of the board?

There's going to be major differences from retail for sure considering the fact this is an earlier prototype than the one Simon_Belmont has. (and his had a handful of differences like different substages in stage 4, and different enemy sprites). So it's very likely this is a very incomplete prototype. The fact it says 0.1 might even imply it's a extremely early build.

That's a hassle to expect a seller to dump it(if they even have ROM equipment) and then compare checksum, I'd bet they have no idea what any of that even means. It's a good bet going by the info on the cart it's different, anyway. Going by their other auctions they don't put up screenshots. Normally I'd care, but like Mistergambit said, we've got enough info to tell us this should be worth it.

So far no one has said they wanna chip in. Hope that changes!

I'm considering chipping in 50 to maybe even 100 for this prototype. I do hope though that I'm not the only other one that's willing to chip in for this. It's unfortunate the other beta wasn't dumped, but I can see why from the hoarder/collector's point of view. It still sucks. So this could be a chance at getting a beta of the game at last that isn't a late prototype like the one that's already out.

Got a pledge from someone in PM. I'm not publicly posting how much we got since I don't want anyone using that to their advantage(any other donators keep that in mind), but in any case, all help is appreciated!

One? Go up a few posts and you'll see I was collecting funds for it :p Unfortunately didn't make it, was beat by like $30.

I hope if the buyer is out there they'll come forward with it eventually. I hate to think this will end up like Niel's proto and only be available if people want to pay a ridiculous 2,500. No thanks.

The last minute of the auction was insane, it stayed around 400$ for a couple of days an then 600...800 and boom almost 2000... Way too much, I gave up after $1200...

Same seller has also a Lufia proto, I'm pretty sure this one as well will make some good money.

Were you bidding? I guess you didn't see my post and weren't interested in helping us procure funds to dump it :p

Damn, what a shame. Another beta probably is just now going to be collecting dust and get bit-rot. I understand the collectors/hoarders point of view don't get me wrong, but it's frustrating. It would have been cool to see this come to light after how the 0.5 proto didn't come out. Oh well. It is what it is.

Well, we have no idea who the buyer was so who knows what might happen. Though going by how things have gone in the past.....yeah.
