What is your opinion of the Wii U? What are it's strengths? Weaknesses? In my opinion, the Wii U is a pretty cool system. Along with the Wii, the Wii U takes 3rd place in the graphics dept. but still one-ups the last generations graphics king console(Wii-Xbox OG, Wii U-PS3). So technically you can't say it's last gen tech because just look at Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge version comparisons, the Wii U can handle WAY more textures than the PS3 or Xbox 360. And that is done with a LAUNCH TITLE. Yeah, and I'm sure the community here is familiar with the fact that it takes time to get the most out of a system graphically. For example, Oblivion on Xbox 360 vs. Skyrim on the 360. So just imagine if the Wii U is already beating out last gen easily, as young as it is, maybe the gap between Wii U and PS4/Xbox One will be a lot smaller than people really think. This is all just graphics talk, trust me gamplay>graphics anyday but I just wanted to share my opinion. But now I want to ask yours because nothing I say is fact I'm simply conversing with fellow gamers Discuss
There's a pretty huge gap between the Wii U and PS4/Bone. The Wii U's games library is really lackluster too, and the gamepad is mostly only used as a gimmick. The gamepad was a stupid choice by Nintendo who thought they had a huge new fanbase after the success of the Wii, while in fact the Wii was just 2006's Tickle Me Elmo; most people who bought it obviously didn't get a Wii U. Now they can't really drop the Wii U's price since the stupid gamepad costs so much to produce, so the new gimmick is actually what's killing the system.
Sheesh, I can see how you view the Wii U lol... But sir I beg of you to read this short compilation of ideas I came up with to justify the Wii U Gamepad: Nintendo + Tablet Gaming- Introduction 1. With the Wii U, Nintendo brought multiple things to the table. For the sake of this discussion, we'll only be discussing topics related to the Wii U Gamepad and it's features. Now some people may not have predicted that Nintendo would bring tablets into the gaming world, but even if you had, you couldn't have predicted how they would go about doing it. 2. For sake of clarity when explaining in-depth topics such as this, I'll explain the concept of Tablets in general and the concepts surrounding Tablets in a gaming setting. 3. "Tablets in an average setting" Tablets, vary in size and shape. The most iconic of the bunch though, is most likely the Ipad. Features of the Ipad and other Tablets include but aren't limited to: ⦁ Online Capabilites ⦁ Desktop/PC/Mac functionalities ⦁ Camera ⦁ USB/Micro- USB ⦁ Touch-Screen abilites These are some of the various features sought after when purchasing a Tablet rather than a PC/Mac. You may now be wondering how these features transition to the gaming world, since most of the features I've mentioned above have no real use to average gamer(Minus the Touch-Screen etc.). 4. "Tablets in a Gaming setting" Tablets, when placed in a gaming setting, have a few concepts unique to Tablets alone, I will list them: ⦁ Well Supported by Indie Developers ⦁ Cheaper than most dedicated home game consoles ⦁ Large Screen, when compared to modern handheld consoles ⦁ Touch Screen Controls These are the features that have brought the popularity of the Tablets where they are today in terms of gaming. But there is one major draw-back that holds back all Tablets, undeniably. 5. "Touch Screen Gameplay Only" Tablets lack buttons. This isn't a problem for a few genres, but for FPS, or action-adventure games, buttons are a neccessity. This a a controversial topic because some claim that touch screen controls are fine, but for a dedicated gaming platform, buttons are a must. If you are more of a casual gamer, or a very young gamer, then Tablets might suit you better than a hardcore gaming fanatic. Guess what Nintendo does. 6. "Controller + Tablet= Wii U Gamepad" Nintendo comes with inovations that get the best attributes from Tablets- Large Single Screen, Touch Screen controls, etc. and a Standard Gamepad- buttons, triggers, control sticks, D-Pad etc. The incorporation of Standard Gamepad functionalities into the Tablet setting is completely original and has a bevy of possabilities that could result in creative ways to utilize this hardware.
I don't know if any of you recall this, but nintendo had openly stated in the past that before the Wii, they were experimenting with various novel schemes for their next console - one of which was a DS-like experience, with two screens, akin to the WiiU. The problem is the lack of titles. That is impacted by the scalar difference in horsepower and the devtools, leading to a future shortage of third party support if it's not a sure hit. The hardware is Nintendo's CPU IP PowerPC core times 3 (2 threads per PPC core) and the graphics card is relatively modern - the total package is far from powerful though. A lack of a capacitive touch-screen further hurts practical porting from modern Tablet/Phone-era games, and we know they have an audience to an extent. Bottom line: the titles matter the most. If nintendo can create momentum with their own software, third parties could follow.
Nintendo as a company have no idea like Microsoft, they are not as bad but I don't like what they are doing at all. They have a lot of money in the bank like 4.4billion, and they should use it more wisely than bringing out stupid dogshit gimmicks. Plus Wii U was no WOW effect, and really neither are the other consoles... However on topic of the Wii U I don't see much use out of it. My friends all have one but they barely use it, and out of all titles Smash Bros will probably be the most played title on it, like it was for the Wii, but that's the only reason people will use the thing. Sure there's other titles but it seems Nintendo are only good at making games for their own systems, 3rd party support is balls.
Actually Wii U is not more powerful than PS3 and Xbox 360. Almost all ports have framerate problems because of its slow CPU. But GPU is better in some ways. Nintendo makes some oustanding games but not enough. And there is zero third-party support already. I think I'll buy Wii U at the end of system life for some games: 3D World and Zelda.
The GamePad is absolutely fantastic, especially for off TV play. Unless you experience the GamePad you don't know how nice it is. Games really aren't an issue anymore either. Of course, 3rd party games are a little lacking, but there are enough games out now that if someone bought one now they would have plenty to play.
The major issue you haven't addressed at all is that tablets can actually be played anywhere, while the gamepad does dick if it's not connected to a Wii U. Plus it has a small, crappy resistive touchscreen and manages to have seriously shitty battery life even though all it does is receive signals from the Wii U. It's not going to be contending with tablets. For the record, the gamepad does have potential: some of the minigames in Game & Wario use it in really good ways, for example.
I accept your words and see truth in them. The lack of the FULL ability to be separate does damage it's usefulness, but atleast you can see how it has something unique to offer.
Wii U isn't all that different from the Wii in terms of games, which isn't very different from GameCube, which isn't very different from N64... I think you see the pattern here.
I LOVE my Wii U maybe it's because i have two young sons that i play it with alot but i have WAY more fun on that system then any of my others , and i don't know what people talk about it not having many games i recent got a PS4 and i can tell you that it REALLY doesn't have many games, and this is coming from someone who describes himself as a Sony "fan boy" also i ( i cringe as i say this ) have also had more fun on my "gulp" Xbox One over my ps4.........BUT this is exactly how it was in the beginning with the ps3, in a year or twos time all these systems will have tons of great exclusives and when the new line up of systems come out we get to bitch and moan some more! Happy gaming! But yeah lay off the Wii U he's trying really hard to stay relevant!
I want a Wii U just to play exclusives like Super Mario 3D World. It still is too pricey and there aren't a ton of exclusives to truly make it a worthwhile purchase. If Nintendo manage to lower the price and release quality 1st party titles like the ones they're planning to release, the system will build momentum and it will be a success eventually. The 3DS started similarly and it has come a long way since launch.
The Wii U could explode in sales if they port Pokemon X and Y to it and add internet battle mode. But Nintendo prefers to keep it 3DS only =(
I think that the WiiU is going to be Nintendo's "Come-to-Jesus moment" where they either decide to really get back in the game with their next system or end up going 3rd Party.
I always buy Nintendo because I have to play the new Zelda. As usual, there are few good third party games. Nintendo is taking a long time to release theirs. I like how it is actually still a video game system and not a "Multi Media System." I miss the days of put in a game and play it. No extra BS. Every person that comes to my house loves playing it. But, they always ask, " Oh, is that the new Wii controller?" The average consumer doesn't know it's a new system. They don't realize that there is no possible way that controller could interface with the original wii. Xbox and PS3 always break. I buy the new nintendo console. Then wait to buy an RROD or YLOD on the cheap. Can't go wrong! - The wii u is just a giant DS. The Tv is the top screen and the control is the touchscreen.
Eh... the OG Xbox had superior hardware, and it even shows, as the best looking games on the OG Xbox look better than the best looking games on the Wii. Sure, the Wii is a great console (and I love my Wii a lot), but I'm not going to fool myself and say that it can output better visuals than the OG Xbox. EDIT: Maybe not, actually... double-checking. EDIT: Okay, maybe I was a bit wrong there.
I got a Wii U for 2 reasons: Wonderful 101 and Bayonetta 2. W101 Delivered. Best Game I played in 2013. I actually started using it alot for streaming Twitch/Amazon/Youtube. Internet browser is pretty good, and he pad is great for navigation and very quiet. My main gaming device however is a PC. I would NOT get a WiiU as a sole gaming machine unless your a huge Nintendo fanboy, and even then get a 3DS instead.
I love the Wii U. It's my favorite current-gen console right now. Super Mario 3D World - Fantastic. Sonic Lost World - Best 3D Sonic IMO. Pikmin 3 - Fantastic. Wonderful 101 - Damn good. Zombie U - Creative and good. I think the gamepad was a genius idea.
I enjoy the Wii U as a casual console. If I had the cash, I'd pick one up over a PS4. It doesn't beg the whole gaming commitment that the other consoles seem to ask of a user, IMO. The gamepad takes some getting used to, but it is a really handy feature, especially with the whole "no tv" mode. The ability to cram the console in some corner with power and play it remotely is fantastic.
