It is pretty... and that is it. As a shooting game, it was one of the worst. Very few, and boring bullets, slow action, and worst of all - Buick-sized hit-box. Well, I think RS, Taroumaru, and Ketsui are all excellent games. I'd put any of them at the top of any related list (even though I completely suck at RS). But I know what you mean. Poor Ketsui... the price is going through the roof, so now everyone's on that "it's not worth what people are paying for it" (which is the definition of something's worth, ironically).
No way! Unlike Sylphia and Spriggan, Sapphire is actually pretty challenging, and it's also the only PCE shooter with a real scoring system. The whole technical aspect is just the icing on top of an already good game, and only makes it better imo. It's not quite up there with Gate of Thunder, Spriggan, Soldier Blade and the likes, but I'd definitely rank Sapphire in the Top 10 of PCE shooters. Even if you don't like Sapphire, you have to admit there are many, many, faaaaar worse shooters on PCE. Stuff like Legion, Hawk F-123, Deep Blue, Honey in the Sky, Rock On, etc (I could still go on listing, imo at least 1/3 of the 109 shooters are utter crap).
People don't go on and on about those though. I never said it was easy... just slow and boring. The huge hit box by default makes it a painful game. I couldn't give it too much time (I played the first couple of stages). I sold mine not too long ago, about 3 days after giving it an honest shot. I could say that for any genre of any system though.
Well, there's nothing wrong with not liking Sapphire, but "one of the worst"!? That's pure hyperbole, that's all I'm saying.:katamari: Even if you dislike the gameplay, you must at least think favorably of the presentation. Other PCE shooters fail even in that respect. Hmm, I don't really agree. Out of 50 or so Saturn shooters there's really only 3 or 4 complete fuckups, for example.
Guess I have higher standards maybe? Perhaps not 1/3, but I can't think of a genre on a system w/ a sizeable library where the majority of it's games are of really high quality. The Saturn shooters might be an exception to the rule, but not by much. There's plenty of boring ones.
I don't know the Pokemon Mini has some great games on it.... I still prefer the Megadrive for the classic shooters with the Playstation 3 not too far behind (mainly as it can run PS2 and PS1 shooters).
Very impressive sir. The Dreamcast definitely had some high quality stuff on it, then again it also had some atrocious releases on it which kinda balance things out. Sad to hear you hate Karous so much. Thats one of the only DC shooters I'm yet to play... but I heard it had a really good soundtrack and looked good, so I was a bit excited about it (despite being completely unimpressed with Rajirugi and HATING Chaos Field). Oh well. Also, I don't know if you addressed this later on, but the Cotton game on DC is Cotton Rainbow. Cotton Boomerang is a remake of Cotton 2 that is on the Saturn (pretty spiffy too, though I prefer the original Cotton 2). h: Blast Wind is probably one of my favorite 2D shooters on the Saturn. Then again, I'm infatuated with Tecno Soft. But yeah, Blast Wind is incredibly easy, but dammit if it isn't insanely fun! I have a review of it on my little site thing (which may or may not be in my signature, I don't know, http://www.angelfire.com/al2/jp there you go, just in case you wanted to read up on it. ). Damn Gaijin, I didn't know you were a fan of ole' Taromaru. Awesome, so that makes... what? Three of us?
I would say it has a good soundtrack, but looks bad (and that's sad, as I love cell-shading). It's a very easy game. I cleared normal in just a couple of days (basically long enough to figure out how to milk power-ups). You can time out the bosses, so yeah -- kind of lame on that front. I'm glad I got it though. It was fun to give it a go. I need to pick up another one of these. Didn't give it much time. 15,000 yen? Yakumo, you're looking in the wrong place. Indeed, I am. I know you no-miss'ed it as well (probably long before and more gracefully than I) but I figured it deserved a video. http://www.super-play.co.uk/index.php?superplay=803
Yeah, me too but the way my time is eaten up these days it's unlikley to be making a come back anytime soon. I can't because I never received one. I didn't even know they had produced them yet. Yakumo
