Could Silent Hill finally be the first good movie based on a game?

Game based movies are a double edge sword.

You see, some games just cant be movies, because if they are faithful to the original then is gonna suck, and if they modify it then is going to piss off the game's fans.

The major problem comes from the fact that most games have little to no story/script. Check mario, sonic, VF, etc...

And (don't hate me for this) the few games that are considered to be top-of-the-class in story and the like just cant be compared to their movie counterparts. MGS is pretty good compared to the average war/spionage movie, yet is not even close to saving private ryan and apocalipse now.

That and the fact that hollywood's creativity and innovation peaked long before games were even popular, makes movie-based games an eternal "average".

Atm it's a sad truth in the movie industry that almost all new releases are average.

That being said Silent Hill seems to be the first video game to movie transilation that has a lot of positive press among gamers. I know it's not out yet but even with the story changes a lot of people seem positive about the movie unlike say Doom or anything Uwe Boll.

I'm unsure whether I'll watch it in the cinema though down here in Australia we tend to get movies 2 - 6 months after the US release.

Did you see it? I'm going to see it tommorow, so far I can't tell if it'll be good or bad. Maybe both. The thing that annoys the hell out of me is it seems to be trying to do that shit where it has some little kid whos suppose to be scary, like in the ring and all those crappy movies. But hey, I bet the Pyramid Head parts might be cool!

i doubt you can compare Metal Gear to saving private ryan and apocalypse now. Its seems like you only played mgs 3, wich is the 1/6 of the story.

Yes I went to go see it lastnight, not everything was bad about it, but over all, left a very bitter taste in my mouth.

I saw it. It was pretty good for a game to movie translation. I played bits and pieces of Silent Hill 1 and I guess I don't have to now.. Ebert was right, sorta. He said those who played the game would enjoy it the most. This is by far the most narrative horror movie ever lol.

I think, as a Silent Hill fan, that the movie is reasonable good. Unlike alot of other game/movie conversions, it manages to capture the game pretty well.

The camera work emulates that of the game (even with a lil' "in" joke about the controls, or so I thought).

Music is taken from the games, which is awesome. Though, it seemed cut in badly at places. It seemed like a directors cut would allude to some of these bad cuts.

The main story was reasonable good. Sticks to some of Silent Hill 1, other bits taken from the other games, some of it kindof hollywooded in.

Unfortunatly, the ending is a bit rubbish. Its not as bad as I thought it would be, but it still left me thinking it could have been done alot better.

Overall, its probably the best videogame/movie crossover to date, however it seems that the Silent Hill style doesn't lend itself well to the movie format (mostly due to the lacking of alot of backstory read in files and notes and such in-game, this had to be covered in the film as either exposition or almost soliloquy).

I played MGS1 and 3, the 2nd one I read the story and honestly it looks like something out of james bond.

I think the best game script belongs to indigo prophecy.

I'm reading some reviews on the web, but i guess i'll have to watch and give my own opinion. Some sites say it's great, other say it's good (best game movie ever), while other say it's terrible.

Just saw it tonight, by far the best movie-from-a-game, and seriously gory. The pyramid guy rips off a little girls' skin! Holy crap! And it looks like it seriously hurt, I actually said "ouch!" out loud in the theatre. At the end some old lady gets ripped apart by barbed wire. Three guys get eaten alive by overly large cockroaches. Is the game this gory? Because although there aren't a lot of kills in the movie, the ones that are there rock.

But yes, it could have done without the narrative towards the end. There's a whole part where the girl/ghost/demon basically explains the backstory, thing is it would have worked just as well without the narrative voice over (is that what "soliloquy" is by the way, narrative over montage?)

Loved it, Brilliant film IMO. I really like how the kept the music from the games in the movie, that was really a treat for me as Im a sucker for that music :) Pyramid head rocked, I just wish he got more screen time. We seen him like 3 times, but yes the skin rip part was great :D

I really never got into Silent Hill, but a friend who has played them kept telling me how it was sticking to the general plot of the games, which is good.

The whole atmosphere of the movie was great and it was especially neat when the sirens began wailing like in the game. Best Game>Movie transition yet!

just finished watching it.. must say it was kind of mediocre.. not really the best I've seen wasn't really scared at all through the movie only jumped once (and that was a really tiny jump :p). for being a game made in to a movie it probably was the best movie I've seen.. but for being just a plain scary movie it was kind of mediocre.. I expected more to be honest. I mean.. the games is so MUCH more scary.
but what do I know.. maybe I wasn't scared b\c of the crappy cam vcd quality rip together with the obvios product placement of google in the movie that kind of ruined the thing too.
    oh well.. I guess I have to see it when it comes to the theatres over here and hope it was b\c of the quality of the rip ^_^;;

They've captured the town perfectly. The scenes upon arriving in the town were very well shot. The enemies seemed present and correct (although Pyramid Head was just kinda thrown in for no good reason - still probably the highlight mind).

But the piss poor script/acting really let it down, and by the time we reach the church it's just a mess.

Best videogame to film conversion - Yes (but there's no competition really, is there?)
