So, i was reading EGM no. 187 at lunch time, and in it, there's a Countdown of the 10 most important video games ever created, but i just couldn't agree with them.

:no they missed so many key tittles in the history of video game and filled the holes with games like madden.:no

it was just so wrong. So anyway, i thought we could make our own community Countdown of the 10 most important games in history.
just post your nominations and i will do the final score board and the countdown at the end. i'm gonna throw away some ideas.

    -Pong
    -Pac-Man
    -Tetris

    -Sonic (1)
    -Super Mario Bros. (2)
    -Mario 64 (3)
    -Doom
    -Metal Gear Solid
    -Final Fantasy 7 (4)
    -The Legend of Zelda (5)

    what else?

    (1) -Game with incredible speed that increased the sales of numerous sega consoles

    (2) -first NES game, wich resurected the video game industry after the crash and now classic solid platformer

    (3) -revolutionary gameplay, controls and camera in a 360 degree 3d environement

    (4) -if it wasn't of this tittle, the playstation brand wouldn't be on top
    like it is right now

    (5) -first game with a save option, plus one of the biggest nintendo character, if not the biggest.

As much as I don't like the games, I think they were pretty much milestones. MGS is a question mark (not bashing the game) but all the other ones that you haven't noted were probably more pivotal than the ones you did note --- people that know shit about games know those games... even Doom to an extent.

  3. Doom = no, Wolf3D = yes
    M64 = no
MGS = yes, the first game that wasnt 100% rambo style, kill everyone.

Probably 90% EA shite since they probably paid EGM to do the top 10 in the first place.

Nah, I'd put it down to Psygnosis' early games as much as FF. They created such a stir back in the day. Wipeout was amazing. Destruction Derby was not but it was still a huge, huge game for the Playstation.

What about the Dreamcast for getting online console gaming really going? Would Chu Chu Rocket or Phantasy Star Online get in there?

I agree. The success of the PS can be attributed to the marketing of the PS brand itself (cos if you have a PS you're cool), and a combination of games: FF7, Tekkens, Wipeouts and Lara's ever-growing breasts (oh, and the TombRaider games too).

I do think Mario64/N64 Zeldas should be there. Think back to the first time you saw Mario64 running, then had a go yourself. Did you soil yourself? I nearly did! Truly amazing games.

I think WOlfenstein is right, should replace Doom deffinately.

But why no Mario 64, seems fair to me?

Also, shouldn't MGS be replaced by an earlier iteration of the Metal Gear series?

Here's another vote that Wolfenstein3D should replace Doom. I also question MGS being on there and think Phantasy Star Online needs to be on that list since it was the first major online console game.

Oh yes, PSO was the game that opened the doors to the whole Online console gaming. Yes, there were online console games before it but it was Phantasy Star Online that really got people in to it.

  12. The original Space Invaders would be on my list and definately Wolfenstein 3D and possibly Mr Do :)

Phantasy Star Online should definitely be on there. Like Yakumo said, Phantasy Star Online was the breakthrough of online gaming. Bringing together players from different countries was quite amazing.

How could i forgot space invaders?

Anyway, i thought that doom should be in for one reason. it maybe wasn't the first fps, but it really started the popular vibe for that type of game. As for MGS, i think it should be in because of it's cinematic feel and story that was never seen before.

as for the EGM countdown, here it is:
    10-Sonic the hedgedog
    9-Street Fighter 2
    8-Pokemon Red
    7-Tomb Raider
    6-FF 7
    5-John Madden Football
    4-Halo
    3-Tetris
    2-GTA 3
    1-Mario 64

those two games where also released on saturn if i'm not mistaken, and tomb raider too.

and i still think mario 64 deserve a place, the controls, camera and gameplay where top notch and revolutionnary for a 360 degre 3d platformer. in fact, it was the first to make it right.

tomb raider - you play as a half naked female with big boobs, she moans alot. the whole ability to explore was a new thing for me as well. think of all the games since then were you play as a half naked big boobed female. theres even a porn star named after laura croft.

sewer shark/night trap - some of the first games to have FMV. most people hate FMV. but think about what it has spawned.

herzog/ herzog zwei - one of the first if not the first? real time strategy games, herzog zwei was the influence for a lot of later rts games.

duke nukem 3D - i put this here instead of doom or wolfenstien 3d. wolfenstein 3d wasnt the first game of its kind, just the only one of them with nazis. personally id rank doom higher than wolfenstein, those death animations were brilliant. though i believe duke nukem 3d's use of strippers and loose morals have contributed more to videogamedom than the other two combined.

gauntlet - the first game i know of that was just as enjoyable playing alone as it was playing with a bunch of people...multiplayer bla

half-life - first game? to have sold itself entirely on user created content, mods...counter strike, dod, and some other crappy mods have done so well they have become their own standalone products. valve or whoever released the sdk early on with the actuall tools they used to build the game themself...worldcraft ect.. now its allmost become standard for fps games to come bundled with level editors.

i think we should do a top 15 or something, because 10 is way too small for the number of games that leaved traces and irritage.

So anyway, what seems to be certain right now is that these tittles are in, if i'm not mistaken:
    -Pong
    -Tetris
    -Pac-Man
    -Space Invaders
    -Wolfenstrein 3d

What is near to be in (at that time):
    -Phantasy Star Online
    -Mario 64
-Metal Gear (original or Solid serie)

Other Honorable Mentions (i would like if everyone could post their opinions on them):
-The Legend of Zelda (NES) (Battery Save)
    -OOT
    -Super Mario Bros
    -Sonic
    -Half-Life
    -Gauntlet
    -Night Trap
    -Tomb Raider
-FF7 (or any other ff, but especially ff7 for that mega psx sale boosting)
-herzog/ herzog zwei (never heard about that, but it seems to be the first RTS)

    What else?

And what about these games that weren't mentioned?
    -Civilisation
    -Sonic CD (sega cd sales?)
    -Street Fighter
-Mortal Kombat (all that violence (and sluglish gameplay...), it's because of this game (and Night Trap) that we have age ratings on games now!)
-Golden Eye (it just resurected the genre on consoles)
    -Dragon Warrior (first console rpg!)

meh, so it had an impact on a larger public than just gamers, because they demarked themselves form the others. I really do think these games could have a chance to be in the top 10, it didn't named games just because i liked them, but also because they revolutionned, helped or popularised something, and that's why they seems important in my
eyes, they contributed in a way to the developement of video games until today. You don't need to be an obscure japanese forgoten gem to be in this countdown, you just need to be important in the history of video game, and most of them are known to the public mostly because they created a certain phenomon or revolution, just as pong or pac-man did, by exemple. that's it.

I'm open to every suggestions, and if i made a mistake or anything, just tell me.

  18. Mario 64 was just a 3D platformer with good graphics, so what? There was Sonic 3D, Crash, and numerous others before M64. And yes, the earlier MG games are more worthy then MGS. PSO = yes for me. Half life = yes as well. Oh hell, heres my list:

    10) Sonic - Made Sega famous and gave Nintendo some competition.
    9) GTA Series - Controversial game that brought "Gaming causes violence" to the media.
    8) Metal Gear Series - First game that wasn't 100% "Rambo, kill everything style".
    7) Final Fantasy 7 - Made the PS famous and started Nintendo's slow demise.
    6) Halo - Brought the first American console since Atari to the mainstream.
    5) Final Fantasy - Revolutionised and popularised RPGs.
    4) Pac Man - Brought the sence of fear to players and popularised arcades.
    3) Wolf3D - First FPS Ever.
    2) Mario - Recovered the industry after the crash.
    1) Pong - Brought games into the mainstream.

the Catacomb Abyss! damn, i remember playing this on my pc, but forgot about it since.

Anyway, it would be nice to find the first FPS that started it all. And i still think Mario 64 deserve a place. Yes, there were lots of 3d games before Super Mario 64, but nintendo's was the first to get the control scheme right. The n64's analog made guiding mario seem perfectly natural-you weren't fighting him with every step of the way. And since the N64 controller was based around Super Mario 64, well...

ans seen from your point of you, DJcrazyMonkey, i think halo deserve a place too. i'm not really a fan of the halo series, i mean that i enjoy the serie, but not as much as alot of people do, but i must agree with the point you've made.

But on the other side, the point you've made the GTA series and the violence isn't right, the media bashed about the idea that video games could makes your kids violent long before, when Mortal Kombat the Arcades, GTA just increased their so called proofs with all that Teenagers killing people in the streets and learned how to do this in the game. In fact, i think Night Trap or Mortal Kombat deserve the Place of GTA, since they started the nintendo is for kid, and genesis is for cool dudes on the gamer side, and nintendo is bad, but sega is worse on the media side. And it's because of these games that we have ratings on games (like the ESRB ones), and teenagers shouldn't be suposed to play games with a mature rating (like GTA) anyway (so they shouldn't be killing people in the street for the fun of it and because the game told them to do so, if you take what the medias are telling us). Anyway, that's what i think, let's wait for the opinions of everyone.

And Tetris NEEDS to be in.
