How about that one game that was so bad, it never came out?
I think it was a fighting game.

Dune 2. Bloody awesome game, I've wasted many, many hours playing it.

And I've got to say SMB3. It launched the current marketing for games (remember the wizard - People going to the cinema to see a crap film just so they could catch a glimpse of a new game?), plus its a freakishly good game as well.

Also perhaps some of the lucasarts adventure games (Monkey island, sam + max etc.)

  4. Updated One:

    10) Sonic - Made Sega famous and gave Nintendo some competition.
    9) Mortal Kombat - Controversial game that brought "Gaming causes violence" to the media.
    8) Metal Gear Series - First game that wasn't 100% "Rambo, kill everything style".
    7) Final Fantasy 7 - Made the PS famous and started Nintendo's slow demise.
    6) Halo - Brought the first American console since Atari to the mainstream.
    5) Final Fantasy - Revolutionised and popularised RPGs.
    4) Pac Man - Brought the sence of fear to players and popularised arcades.
    3) Catacomb Abyss - First FPS Ever.
    2) Mario - Recovered the industry after the crash.
    1) Pong - Brought games into the mainstream.

a mention for Virtua Fighter and Virtua Racing for introducing Polygons/3D viewpoints. Totally revolutionised arcades and made home gaming follow on.

But i still feel that Catacombs was closer to the birth of the modern FPS. But i just found Hovertank 3d, which came a little before catacombs i believe.

I don't know if ther can be only ten, but I'd put many of these in or near the list: Space Invaders, Pac-Man, Asteroids, Breakout, Pong, Missile Command, Pitfall, Cosmic Chasm, Donkey Kong, Tetris, Super Mario Brothers, Super Mario Brothers 3, Super Metroid, Virtua Racing, Star Fox, Elite, Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy VII, Dragon Quest, Castlevania, Ys or Ys 2 (PC Engine Version), and Metal Gear Solid.

    And I'm still missing some.

Yes, I agree, especially since this list is the most "important" game, not necessarily the best, or most popular, but "important". With Virtua Fighter being the first 3D fighting game, I can attest to it on a personal level. I can remember going from 2d figthers to Virtua Fighter and being so flabbergasted and amazed at the difference. I can't begin to describe how I was amazed by the movement and graphics. I played that game for hours...

Also, I'm not sure if you're aware of this fact, but Virtua Fighter made it into the Smithsonian Institute.

I didn't actually but quite right it should!

Remember, before Virtua Racing you couldn't turn round and go the wrong way round the track :boobies2

Basing these lists on the logic of "the tech from X came from Y, so Y needs to be on the list", i.e. Wolf 3D, doesn't work. Whatever game made the shit popular should be on there, so FF7 should, and, like, Adventure for the 2600 shouldn't.

FF7 put Sony on top. If it had been an N64 title, Nintendo would have won the generation.

Virtua Fighter should be on there.

Bad as this is (I'm a huge Sonic fan), I don't think Sonic deserves a place on the list.

Super Mario 64 should DEFINITELY be on the list, it was THE 3D platformer, everything has been based on it.

I think Doom should be on there just because of how omnipresent it is in the pop culture lexicon. Everyone and their freakin' cat has played Doom, my Dad's office building had it circulating around for awhile until they had to pull it off because the lawyers weren't doing their jobs, lol.

I see your point, Wangan but I would still argue for Sonic to be in there. It was just the whole 'coolness' that Sonic injected in to games. He was marketed with loads of attitude that just wasn't around before.

That's right mate. I like The original final fantasy more than Dragon Warrior/quest, by exemple, but i do know Dragon quest started it all. (On the other hand though, if it wasn't of Final Fantasy, Square wouldn't be here anymore, so it may deserve a place)

We just want games that revolutionned, saved, changed or marked the history of video games, not necesary the best tittles.

    Agree with you there.

As for the thing of the first FPS ever, i think we should forget that, and place doom
or wolfenstein 3D, since they're the two tittles that really started the FPS mania, and i really think ID software needs a place somewhere for their work.

As for Virtua Fighter/Racing, wich one apeared first? or wich one should be in ? i doubt there's a place for the two tittles, sadly.

So anyway, what seems to be certain right now is that these tittles are in, if i'm not mistaken:
    -Pong
    -Tetris
    -Pac-Man
-Wolfenstrein 3d or Doom (always opened to suggestions)
    -FF7
    -Mario 64
    -Phantasy Star Online
    -Halo
    -Virtua Racing/ Fighter

What is near to be in (at that time):
-Metal Gear (original or Solid serie)
    -Super Mario Bros
    -Sonic
-The Legend of Zelda (NES) (Battery Save)
    -Mortal Kombat/ Night Trap
    -Half-Life
    -Dragon Warrior

Other Honorable Mentions (i would like if everyone could post their opinions on them):
    -OOT
    -Gauntlet
    -Tomb Raider
-herzog/ herzog zwei (never heard about that, but it seems to be the first RTS)

    What else?

And what about these games that weren't mentioned?
    -Civilisation
    -Sonic CD (sega cd sales?)
    -Street Fighter
-Golden Eye (it just resurected the genre on consoles)

Remember that this isn't definitive at all, i'm just taking the feedback of everyone as best as i can to advance trough the processus. But remember, i'm always opened
to every suggestions or commentary. ;)

i would like it alot if you could post your opinions on every tittles in this post, along with games that haven't been mentionned. and should we switch to 15 places?

    My Ideas

What is near to be in (at that time):
    -Super Mario Bros
I'd say 3 rather than one - if only because 1 was bundled with the consoles, so who knows how it would have sold otherwise

    -Sonic
for me, no - its the same old, only faster - which yes was a large revolution, but it hasn't been emulated in the same way as, say, mario 64 controls have been

-The Legend of Zelda (NES) (Battery Save)
Also marks a milestone in terms of its world size, so yes, put it in!

    -Mortal Kombat/ Night Trap
There have been violent games which had been brought to the medias attention beforehand, so I would say no to these 2...

    -Half-Life
go for it, put it on

Other Honorable Mentions (i would like if everyone could post their opinions on them):
    -OOT
Good, but not good enough for the list. It did have its flaws, and it didn't do much new

    -Tomb Raider
Put this in, I think. First videogame character designed to look as realistic as possible who became an icon.

And what about these games that weren't mentioned?
    -Sonic CD (sega cd sales?)
Yes, because the music is bloody fantastic, if you avoid the US version like the plague that is...

    -Street Fighter
Yes, first popular "modern" 2d fighter. Hell, for years they even had a machine at my local swimming pool!

-Golden Eye (it just resurected the genre on consoles)
Put this in over halo. Halo, whilst a good game, did nothing special

Also, go for wolfenstien 3d over doom, just because I think wolfenstein 3d was more significant.
I don't think virtua racing/fighter are worthy enough for the top 15 games. Mario Kart however I think is - first example of marketting a character in a different kind of game to normal, and a bloody good game as well. Also, battle mode could be the first "fighting"-type racing game.

well, halo didn't revolutioned anything, but to quote DJcrazymonkey: '' 6) Halo - Brought the first American console since Atari to the mainstream'' and it is true. Anyway, i think both games should be in. Let's switch to 15 places, ok?

and thx for sharing your ideas about the ''nominations'', the_steadster. :) you opinion is apreciated mate, and i hope other members will do the same. it's the way to go if we want to progress.

I'm finding it pretty hard to choose what I think should go on the list. It's kinda difficult to choose between the games that revolutionised things or created new genres (or at least made them known), or the games which made these new genres or whatever actually popular, e.g. Dragon Quest vs. Final Fantasy, Yie Ar Kung-Fu vs. Street Fighter, SMB vs. SMB3, etc.

    Gotta agree with that..

Also agree with Le Spank. Virtua Fighter and Virtua Racing introduced Polygons/3D viewpoints. I'll never forget the first time i saw Virtua Racing.

I would also say Wipeout should be on the list. Ape Escape is a fantastic game, but it's quite under-rated.

I say let's list the top 50. With that in mind, yeah, Pokemon should be on the list of course. Not one of my favourites either.

Maybe the Sims and others like Ms. Pacman (the first mod of a popular game), I-Robot (Atari, 1983 - Arcade), and perhaps River Raid.

Nah, not the top 50, that would be way too difficult to do. maybe 20, but 50?

And i also like wipeout and ape escape alot, but it never made anything to the history of video game (especially ape escape), correct me if i'm wrong.
