The Creator for the Game Giana Sisters, Armin Gessert died at the Weekend because of a heart attack. RIP!
R.I.P. Armin Gessert you created a masterpiece . I will never forget you Sir, you did not just create a Mario rip off. You made a game, I prefer over Mario Brothers 1 !
He of course did do other games too, although nothing really that note worthy though, I am sure no one can remember another game he did outside a google search.... Although he founded Spellbound which did Desperados... which was a good game. GGS was a bit clunky and frustrating and personally I couldn't see what the fuss was about apart from it being a poor man's Super Mario Brothers....
Same here. But I didn't grow up with a C64 and I believe that's the most important requirement to find any good in Giana Sisters. When I stumbled upon this game a couple of years ago, it was hard to believe for me that anyone seriously is amazed by this obvious rip-off which lacks the dynamic of the original so hard.
yeah, and the music was awesome. I think that the music was way better than the Mario Brothers music, even to this day I prefer that music. compared to Mario Brothers 1 Chris Hülsbeck was/is the bomb with that game.
:-( his legacy will always live on, fantastic game that will be important for generations to come, no small feat.
Yes the music is really good one. There's a nice port to Nintendo DS with new graphics and few new features.
you guys win. Honestly, I feel that if you didn't experience Mario before Giana Sisters is the only way you can think the game was amazing. I'll give you the bit about the music though. catchy, but not exactly as iconic.
and today's winner of a fanboy award is.. N64gamer for being a person who does not get, that the music was the real gem of the game. Cause it is not "just another rip-off of SMB. It was and is a game, that ripped from SMB yes. But the music is still better than SMB1, even though it was only SID chip sound. Second of all, the C64 computer has always had some magic touch to it. Heck the last time I compared the Bubble Bobble theme from the C64 and Arcade then I would say it was incredible that the C64 sound, almost sounded just like the Arcade version. Perhaps a bit different , but the NES version of that theme was more midi like in my book. But the theme is a theme you either love or hate. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mafip6Am99c How many has covered the theme from SMB ? And how many has covered the theme from Giana Sisters ? well the answer to both questions are , an arseload of people have done that. And the reason is simple, a load of people thinks the themes are great.
WDK, let a person have an opinion, he's entitled to think that the game is shit in all aspects if he so pleases.
Call me crazy, but I'm going to agree with WDK here. He's entitled to an opinion, but cmon...."I watched a video and it sucks." Play the game for awhile and THEN declare that it sucks. I've only played GGS on CD32, so I can't speak to the C64 music...but I don't really like the gameplay, myself. I don't like the way Giana moves...and I hate the controls. (SERIOUSLY, I KNOW, UP IS USED FOR JUMP WHEN YOU DON"T HAVE TWO BUTTONS, BUT IT WOULD BE GREAT IF WE COULD TURN THAT OFF!) I feel like GGS was really close to being good, but it just should have been polished a bit more. It's something that Mario Bros. got and something GGS didn't. It happens FAR too much on Commodore computers.
You are absolutely right, but messing with a person can be fun too. Even though I would not consider my last comment very fun. But I will admit, I do like SMB, but I played The Great Giana Sisters first, and I fell for its music, and all that jazz . Heck I even remember playing SMB1 on SMB All Stars on SNES, and I was thinking "damn.. this game reminds me of a game I have played before ". And later on in my life, I found out what all the hubbub was about when it came to the infamous game. But I still love Giana Sisters to this day. So go figure.
The GS theme is brilliant. But the SMB theme is a master piece just as well, you can't and don't deny that. The simple difference between both games is just that other than GS, SMB is in addition to that also a real dynamic game whose perceptible purity really amazes. Giana Sisters seems a bit slow-paced in my opinion, it's a good jumper, but that's where it ends. SMB on the other hand feels like it's running in your blood, all the reverted jumps and acceleration things you can do with nothing but 2 buttons and a digital cross. Nobody can tell me that GS gives you a more satisfying feeling of control over the game than SMB, except maybe if the person was locked in a room for the 20 first years of his life and had no toys but a C64 and Giana Sisters to kill time.
