"Its going to be close to the other HDMI kits out there. This has a large custom flex cable, expensive FPGA and HDMI transmitter." So around the $100-120 mark.
Interesting, if that were the case I suppose the mod will feature a (software)switch to let the Dreamcast know which "cable" is connected, so that one can enjoy the high resolution mode of compatible games. @citrus3000psi can you chime in on this? Fun fact when playing Millennium Soldier Expendable with a VGA-cable you'll be presented with a different title screen vs non-vga cables.
The FFC cables connects to PIN6 & PIN7 of the motherboard. So it will be able to emulate plugging in a VGA cable. The software will let you choose 480i/480p via the controller.
Is there going to be a service to get this installed? as the soldering required it out of my league, I would botch it lol
It's not going to be a drop-in replacement part like the DreamPSU, which will alienate almost everyone who stumbles across it via Indiegogo. I'm sure most of the people who are capable of installing it will already be aware it's in the pipeline and would place a preorder or join a mailing list, without Indiegogo getting a cut.
I will offer an install service, like I do with my GCDual. I will also reach out to some other modders in the community and see if they would like to be considered official installers. Oh no. I will just order a large batch for manufacturing and have them made. I will make as many as there is demand for. I won't be do any hand assemble, so large volume is not a problem.
Okay, then can we get another status update then? Are you already close to finishing it? I cant wait to solder one into my Dreamcast Btw its great you'll be offering an installation service as well
Holy shit nice video! Damn citrus has quite the nice workshop for sure, pretty envious of it myself. My soldering skills are uber shit though. Still not had a good enough excuse to use my multimeter. Wouldn't know what the hell to do with half of that stuff in the video anyways lol. I really should just start practicing on old motherboards I have laying around from my PC junk.
I can probably help do installs. Handy with soldering and have plenty of access to the tools to do it.
The interference problem is solved. So hardware is final, at this point. Christof is working on the maple bus and osd at the moment.
Glad to hear the interference issue is solved! Keep up the good work you two! Maybe this project along with an ODE would get me to play the DC more often.
@citrus3000psi will you have the new board on OSH Park? What about the flex cable, will that have to be ordered through you?
It actually wasn't interference. Right now the FPGA is reading the value of pin6 to enable 480p or 480i mode. My VGA cable had a cold solder joint and when slightly heated up the FPGA was flipping back and forth between the modes. Once the OSD is up and running, this will be flipped around. As the FPGA will control pin 6. (VGA/RGB/Composite cables will still work too, as they will override the fpga output if there is a conflict.) The new board is on my github now. I'll post the flex details soon, probably once the whole project is ready for launch. I'll also sell just the flex cables.
Do you have any boards that I can test? Last time I shopped for components some were out of stock so I couldn't buy enough to complete a board. There is a big CvS2 tournament coming up in the first weekof August and it would be awesome to get a Dreamcast setup with HDMI for a stream.
