It's just another goddamn way to classify someone by their fashion choices. Back in the mid 90's "emo" music wasn't anything like what's considered emo today, and noone looked like they walked out of a Marilyn Manson concert (they were still called Goth or Freaks). It's just another stupid trend, which is really just a variation of an old trend that's been making the cycles since the 80's.
I won't argue that the YouTube generation who have attached themselves to the emo trend aren't douchebag attentionwhore's with questionable fashion/music taste. My point though is, who gives a floppy cock what teens these days dress like? And I don't think that choosing to be "Emo" as a fashion choice (and to some lame degrees a lifestyle choice) are anything comparable to being "miserable" or clinically depressed. I don't think anyone who calls themselves "emo" think so either, unless they are just idiotic twats (most kids anyway) who feel the need to associate their fashion choices with a mental illness to in some way validate it. The same would be true about the white kid in upper class suburbia who feels he can truely relate to the hiphop culture, and takes on it's trends out of preference but when confronted claims that they dress/behave that way because they somehow understand it on a level you never will. Anyone who does this doesn't have an ounce of self-awareness, or opinion, and feels a need to "fit in" by sticking out, because if they can't understand themselves, there's no way you'll ever get them.

I was about to post but ... this said it all

Anyway Id rather have to put up with emo kids and emo music than having to put up with more goddamned hiphop/rap music and thug/gangsta-wannabe's and all that retarded US ghetto/hiphop culture :banghead:

Never knew any actual emo's in High school....except maybe a few, perhaps. That more than likely got expelled or moved an yway.

I knew a few "Wiggers" though, and one of my friends is one, and whenever he comes over, he shows me his latest cell phone (because he loses them on a daily basis) and plays incredibly annoying rap music and talks like he's a black gangsta sometimes, too.

You know what guys? I'm emo. I don't say I'm emo, but I get called it. But I'm not depressed. I'm one of the happiest, most upbeat, and perky people you will ever meet. Ask Graciano or even Mr Casual or Phrequency.

    I enjoy "emo" music.

I've never cut myself. I've never even contemplated suicide. I like the fashion, I like the music. And with most types of music, there is a fashion style to go along with it. Ravers, goths, punks, rappers, country...it's all there. It's no different. Do I call myself emo? Jokingly. Do I use emo as a term for depressed? Again, jokingly.

I do find the "emo song" http://emosong.ytmnd.com/ << absolutly hilarious.

and http://youtube.com/watch?v=JGLv3IEL0VI << "How to be Emo" roflworthy.

Emo is not a life style to me, I've been dressing this way and listening to emo before it had a negative connoctation. 4 years ago, if you asked if I was emo, I would say sure. It simply meant you enjoyed emo music, not that you were some suicidal tween.

The most "emo" part of me, is I'm in a suicide pact with close friends, but that's ONLY if the world runs out of oil, since society will collapse on itself and we'd just rather die than suffer mass hysteria.

So here's the answer to your question god of hardcore, and I hope you're listening.

    1) Emo is a music genre
    2) As with majority of music genres, it is accompanied by a fashion style.
    3) As such, "emo" is also a fashion style
    4) it can have a negative connoctation relating to depression if used in the context that allows that.

You say you're depressed, thus it can be stated that you are EMO despite not looking "emo" or listening to "emo".

However, with me being perky, and happy I too am "emo". But, using it to describe you is negative while using it to describe me is simply catagorizing my musical and fashion taste.

So shut up you emo twat, stop spamming with stupid threads, I vote for lock and perhaps someone should get a temp ban for spamming.

    Ewwwww checkered belt!! :p
I kid, I kid. Whatever makes you happy ;) I'd have to say that emo isn't my thing though. No labelling is. In Britain I was labelled a "Mosher" because I have long hair. Long hair automatically equals a love for Metallica and Avenged Sevenfold, right? Truth is, I'm much more into soft rock and prog, and though I listen to metal as well, the point stands that labelling and generalising sucks. Don't do it.

Texas is the Reason, Sunny Day Real Estate, Fugazi, et al... yeah I hate it when people tack the emo(core) label on today's pop-punk. Emocore was really just a nickname, and the proper title for the genre is "post-hardcore", because it evolved from the hardcore scene, rather than directly from the punk scene. Still, the music really awesome and while the "emocore movement" didn't have nearly as big an impact as the grunge movement, I dare to say it was every bit as important. Anything to break away from the shitty Glam Metal scene of the 80's was a good thing in my opinion.

Yup, a reason I don't even use emo as part of my vocabulay is because I'm sure it annoys the fuck out of people who actually like that music style. I'd get pissed if everyone suddenly did that with stuff I like too.

I really don't think a lot of the depression/suicide crap even goes along with "todays emo" if I'm right. I dunno. I think thats something people just slapped onto it.

I'm not really emo, and I don't consider myself a pothead (not dumb/unmotivated enough). I enjoy my drugs, though.

The Get Up Kids - 4 minute mile was a pretty good album, as is Sense Field - Killed for Less. Never really got into the genre as a whole though, always been into punk and now more house.

Here in Chester, UK, we have Skemos - the natural progression of ska kids (smellies) into emos (goths). Its their label of choice by the way!

I remember watching a Fox News report on Emos on youtube once. Damn it was hilarious.

They were using "fake" Emo sites (as in joke ones) that show people how Emo they were, like asking, "How often do you cut yourself?" as questions, and Fox News acted like it was a real "Threat".

I also remember them interviewing some emo girl, and she said "Emo stands for EMOSHUNAL"

    it depends.

One's consumption of drugs isn't directly proportional to what they achieve in life. Many great historical figures were drug users, including well known British and American politicians who are fondly remembered.

You don't need drugs to be a loser, being mediocre is most people's curse anyway.
