I'm kind of irked that so called Pro gaming circuts don't have 3rd strike and Virtua Fighter and other such games in their competitions.

My guess is these things are just marketing Tools and that's why. If there's money to be made making faux stars out of SF IV players we'll see it.

    But DOA......Professionally?

    PFFT.

But I got to thinking about the systems in Virtua fighter and Garou and 3rd strike and Guilty Gear.

They're mad involved. Counters, Parrys, Just defends, TOP, reflexes and timing.

And Street Fighter II It takes crazy reflexes and timing to pull off long combos.....no auto chains here.

Fighting games have their tournaments. Evo being the biggest but the pay outs at EVO aren't as big as other so called "PRO events"

But anyways the question remains does it take more skill to master a GOOD Fighter (not DOA) than an FPS or whatever else they play at these tournaments?

Does it take more skill than a FPS?

Yes. Since the old FPSs, on the professional level, boil down to making laps around the level, remembering how much time before x weapon respawns, being there to snag it at that moment, and then hitting your opponent in time before they can snag a weapon.

At least, thats all pro Quake stuff ever boiled down to. I still think calling F4t4l1ty or whatever "the world's greatest gamer" is a fucking joke.

And honestly, most FPS now just boils down to knowing how to manipulate the weapons and knowing the maps.

But do I think 2D fighters take more raw skill than say, 2D shooters?

    No.

Yeah I'd like to see that Poser Wendal whatever his name is try to play 3rd strike. He claims he's played and is good at Street Fighter. I say Prove it.

Fighters are the ultimate skill tester.

And there's so many 2D and 3D ones that are just awesome. I myself like the weapon based fighters. Samurai Shodown 2 and SC4 being my favs.

I miss the days when arcades were huge and they even held tournaments for fighting games. I won a Super SF2 one with Fei Long and a VF2 one with Lion heh. I won a Saturn system for the VF2 tournament!

In a SS2 tourney I was destroyed in the first round by some little asian girl about 11 years old. I was Ukyo and she Nakoruru and I was totally obliterated.

No. Different genres test skills in different ways.

Obviously you have not played more modern FPS'ers that don't employ the doom/quake mechanic.

It depends on the game but I definitely agree with you on the "Pro Gaming" crap. It seems to me they don't play very difficult or involved games. While a FPS takes skill it's different than a fighter or shoot em up. And really just in general it seems to me these people you see just aren't really that good anyway. I mean I'm sure you could train a chimp to be just as good as them if you make it do nothing but that game all the time.

FPS that aren't liked Doom and Quake seem to be based around "find the sniper rifle and hide".

I love fighting games, but it annoys me when I play with somebody who button mashes and kills me.

There might be one or two exceptions to that rule, but in general, its pretty accurate.

Arcade style fighting WAS the genre to measure twitch game skill since they were like the only strictly competitive games. Now since the genre isn't nearly as popular as it used to be, and with of the prevalence of competitive FPS and strategy games, people will argue that their favorite genre is just as skillful (and can be played like an art). For me though, there's still nothing like fighting games to prove yourself, since competitively there's no unpredictibility from AI, just an honest human match of reflexes and memory, both players playing on the same machine with ideally no technical advantages if the controls are responsive.

Ok, but what about the other genres? And what if you suck at FPS'ers? Hardly a good test.

Xbox Live is going to run the test. Some of those games have people that do nothing but play that game.

Team Fortress 2 actually requires skill and strategy. Its not about finding the best weapon in the game, because there are no weapons to pick up.

Each class has a counter, and the game can be pretty random, you never know which class you'll run into. If you are really skilled at the game though, you can still beat other classes even if you are the opposite class.

The Spy in TF2, imo, was one of the most in depth classes in the entire game. You should see the FAQ for "How to play Spy", its insanely large.

Most 2D shooters now just boils down to knowing how to manipulate the weapons and knowing the levels.

Most platformers now just boils down to knowing how to manipulate the character and learning the maps.

Most fighting games now just boils down to knowing how to manipulate the character and knowing the special moves.

It's a pretty ridiculous generalisation, and you'd do well to drop it. I mean, even if it were true, is this intended as some kind of critique? If you want to slam FPS games there are plenty of more potent arguments, such as the limited thematic similarities that they tend to share - aliens + space marines, WW2, etc. Saying that they share gameplay characteristics is not a convincing criticism. It's just redundant.

Um, no. All I'm saying is that memorizing the map and grabbing the good weapons is the primary focus of your typical FPS on a competitive level. Its not hand eye coordination (see 2D shooters and some fighting games) and reflex as much as its just knowing where the shotgun/sniper rifle/rocket launcher/sword/whatever is and... getting it.

Seriously. This doesn't apply to ALL FPSs, and I think the word "most" certainly said that, but in the end, most FPSs DO just boil down to who gets x weapon first.

Its like, FPSs in general are more a game of paper, rock, scissors than anything involving skill.

Obviously, Team Fortress 2 is one of the exceptions. I'm mostly thinking Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4 here.

    Edit:
Also, I can guarantee you, it takes a lot longer and requires a lot more skill to play competitively in a 2D shooter than it does for any FPS.

For the most part, yeah. I mean, it does involve, like with Halo for instance, there's good planning and reaction that involve when to throw a grenade, what type, etc., but yeah, pretty much. That's why I don't like playing like that. I grab a weapon I like and go from there. The sniper etc is not it, lol.

I think with team play FPS types, that's where skill is needed. Like CTF and stuff.
