While I admit I don't know about Doom, I do know one of the world's best Quake players, and even he will admit that Quake boils down to running a gauntlet around the map in time with weapons respawning and killing your opponent before they can get a weapon.

But I would say Doom would be one of the exceptions I mentioned, since it is one of the first vs. FPS and thus the issues that would later arise with weapons and map memorizing aren't quite as prevalent. Same goes for UT.

    But thats like, two games...

When I made my comments on FPSs, I was thinking FPSs in general, not the one game that is predated only by Faceball and Wolfenstein 3D. ;-)

You play it on the 360? Yea i do have plenty of an idea what you were talking about but the problem is not only are you playing it on the 360 what have you said beyond "Oh i've played those games....." that shows you know anything. Put up or shutup.
It does boil down to that but there's alot more tricks involved in it is what im saying than what just seems to be going on. I can say all street fighter alpha amounts to is pressing buttons until your opponent is dead no weapon switching or anything but the skillset and complexity really isn't comparable between the genre's. I like shumps and pure-deathmatch games myself. If anything i think Shumps are the most complex genre as they involve use of glitches in-game tricks and obscene reflexes.

OMG you clearly have no idea how a REAL SHMUP is played because you misspelled it twice. And don't talk to me about pro Doom crap I was playing competitive MineSweeper before you could even handle a trackball. I was #11 on the leader boards for about eight and a half years although there is absolutely zero quantitative evidence of my claims.

This topic is beginning to border on stupidly hilarious. I always fancied us as skilled gamers that share a passion for the collection side of things. But this thread is starting to show the gritty nerd underbelly.

Do fighting games take more skill than other games? Yes they certainly do, but it's a different skill set altogether. It's hard to compare genres.. there may never be a definitive answer as there is clearly a bit of foolish pride in nearly everyone answers here. When you're good at a shmup or a balanced fighter it is for very different reasons than being skilled at a puzzle game or an fps. Is one skill more useful or valuable than another in the gaming realm??

Someone should resurrect the "are games easier" thread. Some absolutely hysterical posts in that one.

I absolutly love Doom, but don't give a fuck about shit like this. It just annoys me. i'm sure other peopel can agree. Nothing wrong with it I guess but whatever.

Unreal Tourny and Halo are really fun as well. OMG ITS BROKEN COMPETITIVELY! Who fucking cares. It's fun.

Quake is years old JP. Compare it with something more modern, then your argument holds more credibility. Counter-strike and CoD4 do not match your stereo typical shooter game in the same way that VF doesn't match a stereotypical fighting game.

In the end, this argument is going to be fans of beat 'em ups vs fans of FPS. Pointless.

I'm still waiting on scientific evidence to prove to me that FPS's are fun.

I know you're being facetious, but really, there are fun and interesting FPS games out there. Portal being the shining example from this generation. Excluding an entire swathe of games due to their perspective is kind of daft.

Portal has some good ideas, but I really can't say I'm a fan of the execution. After a while I just got bored of doing the same thing, essentially, every level.

I certainly take GP's comment with a grain of salt. That being said there are more to FPS games than the typical mindless sort. The Penumbra games would be two of the best current examples that come to mind. It's a nice combination of adventure/horror survival/action.

Portal was fun as well, although as mentioned, it's a bit of a one trick pony.

GOH - I'm not even going to bother reading this thread.

But yes, fighters do take skill. a LOT of skill.

These pro gaming companys are just that - companies. They aren't marketing tools. But they DO need to make a profit to stay afloat.

Fighters are NOT popular, because they take so much skill. So people won't try to compete.

most gaming circuits make their money off the people who THINK they can compete. They pay money, and lose. the circuit still keeps the money.

the game is hilarious though. finishing Portal was easily one of the most satisfying gaming experiences i've had in a long time.

I can't say I've finished it yet. Maybe one day soon I'll make my way around to beating it.

Though I can't guarantee it, since I am very bored of the formula already (And I think I'm only on like the 6th level, I really can't remember though).

And to add to the topic, every form of competitive gaming takes skill, and to compare the amount of skill it takes to play fighting games vs. any other genre is absolutely ridiculous. Different genres of games really can't be compared to one-another simply because the games themselves are VERY different.

Sure, fighting games and FPS games (generally) both require fast reflexes and quick thinking, but since the gameplay is so different between the two, being a master at Street Fighter really won't help you out if you've never played Unreal Tournament.

All-in-all, I think the argument is dumb.

I just love racing games. People can be bastards on the track - but they are in real life racing. Cut you up, take you out etc etc...

It's just racing around a track - but I could do it all day.

Took the exact words right out of my mouth.

Every different type of Game takes certain skills that only match that Genre.
FPS, Fighting, Racing, Adventure, Puzzle, You name it.

I don't consider myself a competition gamer. I play for the fun of it and if I m good I ll brag, but it isn't my aim really to be the best - i just want to have fun=)
