I'll probably get excommunicated for this but I thought Sonic Adventure was utter shite (oh the blasphemy!) The crappy voice acting alone is enough to drive a man insane, let alone the rest of the god awful game. Sonic's transition to 3D did not go well for me... long live 2 player co-op Sonic 3 + Sonic & Knuckles! Some of the FPS games were good, but shite without a keyboard and mouse which many users didn't own (Soldier of Fortune being one example). I'm not saying playing without a right thumbstick was impossible, but it wasn't as good as keyboard/mouse or dual analog sticks which in some cases killed the experience. There are a lot of games which are avoidable in single player but are transformed into an amazing experience for multiplayer too (and vice versa) so where do you draw the line, at utter shite through and through? If so, Looney Tunes Space Race or even Wacky Races should be up there on both counts. There was an almost endless amount of mind numbingly boring and/or generic fighting games and shooters too but alas this is exactly why such lists are pointless - you may struggle to find any single title which will be universally shit canned due to personal preferences. On the contrary though people may reach consensus with Flintstones Viva Rock Vegas as one of the shittest titles of them all. Yeah it was technically unreleased - but it was finished, pressed (once upon a time I owned a copy of it), dumped, shared and easily acquired so IMO it should still count. In fact Flintstones Viva Rock Vegas is worth two votes per person given that it was probably cancelled because it sucked so badly! The last issue is why should people avoid buying or playing shit games? You need to play them to appreciate the gems you've got and if you spend a large chunk of your disposable income on them you work harder to experience them in full so IMO try whatever takes your fancy and if you end up disappointed, so be it
Limited Budget and room is why i'm trying to weed out the crap from the good stuff when it comes to the Dreamcast.
hahahah Ironically, if your budget is small then you can't really go for the gems because those tend to be rather pricy eh... also, "room". ... Those couple of CD cases sure take up a lot of it. Even an entire Japanese Dreamcast collection could be compressed into one CD shelf with a capacity of 600 (which is smaller than a billy).
I haven't seen many Dreamcast games US ones anyway going for a small fortune. There are 2 local spots I've been picking them up from and amazon seems to have every US Dreamcast game readily available. It's just I don't want to spend money on games that blow. and Once I have all the Dreamcast games I want I'm getting a nice little locked glass cabinet to keep them in. Shut up your face
Blue Stinger is one of those games you just had to experience at the time. Personally, I love the game, and I try to play it every holiday season just because the atmosphere in it kicks so much ass. I also really enjoy Illbleed (from the same guy, who unfortunately passed away a few years ago), but Illbleed is one you have to spend time with to appreciate.
DC does have a lot of "meh" games that don't seem to stand out and are just really average in all categories. There are also some games like Maken X, which have really dumb or bad aspects that I hate (voice acting, poor animation even for the time), but have good redeeming qualities too (character design, crisp graphics, unique gameplay or concept). But there were still some DC games that for my standards were far below the "meh" category and into the "trash" category. 1) Zusar Vassar 2) Blue Stinger 3) Slave Zero
Heh, I enjoyed Slave Zero as well. Before UT and Quake III hit it was the best way to have some 4-player split screen goodness on the DC. Had some pretty neat weapons in the later levels too. For that matter, Spawn: In the Demon's Hand WAS my freshmen year at college. Yeah, not Power Stone, Power Stone 2, or Soul Calibur, Spawn. Everyone would huddle up in my dorm room and we'd play the hell out of Spawn.
Fighting Force 2 I can't believe I dropped $60 on it. It sucked ! Blue Stinger was quirky but interesting and worth a play through. Slave Zero oh man too funny, it got panned and everyone bought it anyway quite meh but at the time there wasn't much out. Virua Athlete or what ever it was called, Nightmare Creatures and that baseball game where you didn't have control over the fielding all crap.
I'll admit the Sonic Adventure was lacking in some aspects, but I still feel like it was a solid game overall. The voice acting wasn't so bad if you changed the language to Japanese. Some of the music was pretty bad, but not nearly as bad as SA2. Apart from the tracks with vocals, there was actually some pretty decent music as well. I liked SA's style, and I thought it was pretty fun to play. It would have been cool if it had played at a consistent 60fps, though.
Sonic Adventure has some really REALLY annoying parts, pretty much any part of the game where you are not Sonic.
Great to see all the Blue Stinger love magically sprouting in this thread. Even replaying it today, it still offers some quirkiness, sort of like playing a real b-movie not one of those modern wannabe b-flicks that try to hard to be bad. Part of the charm of those things is that most of the time they put real effort into the film or game and it still comes out comically bad. As for some DC games I consider to be fairly bad not including crappy generic sports titles, I'll have to go with The Ring, Nightmare Creatures 2, Death Crimson Ox, Zombie Revenge (even though I tried my best to like it as a beat'em up fan) Dragonriders: Chronicles of Pern, Max Steel, Kiss Psycho Circus, Kao The Kangaroo, Floigan Brothers, and Spawn...
>102 Dalmations Puppies to the Rescue Fuck me! I completed this back in 2000, or so as the Missus loved watching me play it (for some odd reason!). Really started to get into it the more I played, IIRC (sad, but true!) Reminded me of a quick and dirty PSone port...
It's a party game, only fun with atleast 8 players. Four to play the game and the other four for commentary (while getting a go to ofc )
The FPS's which allowed you to fake dual thumbsticks weren't bad using the Pad. What I mean is but forward and back and strafing on the x,a,y,b buttons and look on the analog nub. Surprisingly useable. Quake 3 and Half life allowed this but Outrigger didn't and that pissed me off.
I like the Dreamcast as a console, but what most people do not understand is that it failed also because most games were much inferior compared to their PlayStation counterparts, despite running on much more powerful hardware. Take soccer games as an example. The only decent one is UEFA Dream Soccer and it has a lot of very obvious flaws and bugs that can ruin its playability often. It is as if... the game was made in a very big rush and wasn't tested for more than a quarter of hour. The other ones aren't even playable... I'm looking at you, Virtua Striker 2, where players are just plastic dolls and there's no gameplay to speak of. I, too, think that Sonic Adventure, while graphically very beautiful, is a piece of crap gameplay-wise. Honestly I don't even know what they were thinking when they thought that players just didn't want to skip cutscenes. Not only it does kill the (little!) replay value it would have had, but I have enough of fanfiction, and would gladly skip out the stupid talk between Sonic and Tails and head straight into the game. But no! If you were wondering who invented games with great graphics but no gameplay, you need to look no further, it's SEGA. The lackluster Dreamcast library was a big surprise to me when I got my Dreamcast some weeks ago, first because my experience with SEGA was with the solid Master System and Megadrive game libraries, and second due to the fact that the Dreamcast who knows why is hyped as the best thing since sliced bread on the internet. Despite having inferior quality hardware, the PS1 and the PS2 have much better software libraries.
Over a decade in retrospect it's easy to say the PS2 has a better library, but in the short while the PS2 and DC were competing in the marketplace, the PS2's library was crap, while the DC had several great games.
