Just got mine in today! Can't wait to have a thorough Dreamcast session tonight. Excellent work, Beharius!

 

Saturn dreams come true! The Hanzo works perfectly as a Sega Saturn scanliner using Beharius's custom VGA input cable.

To do this you'll need an active converter: composite-to-VGA or better yet Scart RGB-to-VGA, and the proper Saturn AV cables. My Hall TVB-200Plus does an OK job at upscaling the Saturn's s-video output to 640x480 (and no lag!), but when paired with the Hanzo the screen really pops. It cleans up the signal to produce a beautifully crisp and colorful image that just blew me away. In another room I have a Saturn running pure Scart RGB to an active HDMI conveter and to my surprise the Hanzo'd composite signal blows it out of the water. It makes my LED look like an arcade CRT, whereas before it was barely passable.

I took like a hundred pictures to try to capture the great picture quality, but my camera just can't do it. I managed one Castlevania Dracula X image that doesn't quite do the real picture justice, but at least shows the Saturn/Hanzo team up:

And here's the Hanzo with Beharius's custom VGA cable scanlining the Hall's VGA output. With an active converter like this, you can basically add scanlines to any gaming console. Ideally you want to work with RGB, but I picked up this composite converter for $20 and really love how lag-free it is. One day I'll pick up a nice Scart RGB-to-VGA converter and make the final upgrade.

Nice! That's the best picture I've seen of the Hanzo. You've captured its character.

Fucking awesome hardware. I been looking at this thing for the past 2 weeks, and it is astounding. I haven't been on this site much for the past year or so, but this makes me proud to be a part of the Sega homebrew community. People that make their own hardware for my favorite systems make me glad to be a retro gamer. Its people like them that keep the dream alive!

 

Hey Beharius how much is the scanliner cable on its own? I don't think it was available when I ordered my Hanzo but am interested to get one so I can hook it up to my PC.

KENZEI UPDATE:

It requires a 5v regulated power supply, so it will be bundled with an AC adapter... It can work without that too, just runs better with regulation.

KENZEI is a sync combiner add on for Hanzo and other VGA sources(PC, etc), it basically merges H-Sync and V-Sync signals into C-Sync(composite) for making such devices compatible with some displays, upscalers, processors, etc...
