I have to admit, I bought a lime green jpn unit while in HK for a day. Personaly I like it for one big reason, DSiware is neat. The larger screen is nice but it makes some games look worse. For some odd reason animal crossing DS looks worse since the low framerate is more noticable and the globe spinning looks less smooth. Over all the cameras are a gimmic. You'll play with them for 30 mins then never mess with it again (unless showing a friend). The audio playback/record app is even less usefull then the camera. Web browser is also pretty bad as it reduces the color and res on pictures making things look pretty bad. So pretty much the only good features out of this thing is bigger screen & dsiware.
DSi is supposed to have 4 times as much RAM and twice the cpu clock rate from what I've read. Sounds like homebrew applications would benefit but other than that, I wouldn't even buy a DS these days much less a DSi. Too much for too little.
Is that so? I haven't heard anything to that effect. Besides, the DS Lite screen seems nearly perfect to me.
judging by their inclusion of an online-store service in the hardware revision one is lead to believe that there's at least a couple of years worth of life in the current DS. That said, it's more like GB-> GBC than it is GBA-GBA/SP. The reason I m saying this is because Nintendo have made public claims with regard to "DSi"-only features even in their retail games, much to the avail of the hybrid GB/GBC gamepaks. The extra memory and cpu speed, as well as better WiFi connectivity (now supporting 802.11g as well) is a good indication that this isn't a GameBoy Micro fiasco, but the real deal, according to nintendo- hence why the price is so damn high. I m certainly interested in getting one but I m waiting to see how things work out for it in the next 4-5 months, software-wise, homebrew-wise etc. The omission of Bluetooth is a mistake in my view, because it would have given the half-assed wireless connectivity with the Wii a better chance and perhaps some decent software that makes use of the DS as a proper controller without having it on the 802.11b-based chanel (as you know the Wii has to drop its internet connection before it can communicate with the DS for data transfer and real-time interaction). It would be more of a reason to own one if you are also a Wii owner (and who isn't these days?)
It's nothing more than new money for old rope. Another way to keep the DS ball rolling and stretch out the revenue stream vs the PSPs jump in sales.
i love my ds lite to bits. the screen is good, the battery life too, my a*****d 2 works on it. perfect. so i will only get a DSi if i find an awesome deal.
No GBA slot and a bumped up price? NO THANKS. The screen on the DS Lite is fine - why do I need a bigger one?
i still got my ds phat and r4, but i already preordered my dsi! and waiting for my acekard 2i yay homebrew and emulators, and other stuff.... btw it has 2 touch screens right?
No point? DSi homebrew will have more RAM and cpu power to get things done. This will allow for better apps and open up some new possibilities. Perhaps a Sega Genesis emulator worth playing.
Can't have a thread about ds without piracy poking it's head in huh? You know the rules so edit your shit.
Was kinda surprised to see them for sale here already. Don't really need one as I'm quite happy with my PSP.
Did anyone mention that this DSi shit is region locked? It's quite important. I'd add one more thing: nintendo confirmed that there will be DSi Only games on CARTS in 2010, and hybrid cartridges in 2009. So, that THING is just like the game boy color : More or less the same hardware, but they force you to buy another one. GBC at least gave us color. What does this one bring? Camera? hum, Eye toy already exists ! Oh yes I forgot! REGION LOCKING ON A MOBILE CONSOLE ! This will no doubt be without me.
I didn't think about that. The DS Lite actually did that to a few early games too. Resident Evil DS on DS Lite looks really bad, a lot of the shadows and stuff are suddenly brown and on the DS they were dark or black, DS Lite's brightness messed em up. I think one useful thing on the DS Lite was the nice screen being used on GBA games since the nice SP's are probably pricey now.
My son may end up with one for his Birthday or Christmas. He'd be more than happy running around taking pictures and then playing around with them in the photo editor. I'm sure there must be Ben 10 and Power Ranger games available too. God help me. I'm happy with my funky lime green DS considering I only use it for development; I purchased it in full knowledge that the DSi was coming. I knew that the DSi would be higher in price and incompatible with current flash carts. I got my DS brand new for £85, quite a saving compared to £150 for a DSi. It works with the the DSerial and I'm quite happy tinkering away with Dev Kit Pro and learning C.
I keep hearing about pixelated Games and that the region locking stuff Why the F** would you lock a game you can take anywhere? thats dumb and now we can get rid of our DS systems cuz we gona have DSi only games? WTF sorry if i can't post that
