A member PM'ed me about this, and I can see how it can be an issue. With the shoutbox archive included, it really pollutes the search results, as it will populate the list with all the shoutbox posts including the term (in this case, gran turismo). I know that an advanced search can be done, which is fine for someone like myself, but I do think it is worth looking into to see if we can exclude the shoutbox archive from the default search box.

I myself have been stuck from time to time with this.

I would very much like this as a possibility.

Unrelated but can we search PM's? I get lost in em sometimes.

This would require an addon which sadly costs $9.99 plus $5 a year to renew. (https://xenforo.com/community/resources/search-filter-exclude-forums.3476/)

As for PixelButts suggestion there was an addon for this also I think but cannot remember that one. I know a few forums have the option to search PM's when I next get around to it I'll ask the owner of that site what addon it is. (Got to message them about adverts anyway. :p)

I just did a search for Jet Moto before I started a thread about a Jet Moto prototype article I saw. Most of the results were Shoutbox results and they weren't even about Jet Moto. Get rid of the Shoutbox archives. There's absolutely no reason they need to be archived as message board posts. There's gotta be a better way to do it. Put them on the Assembler wiki or something.

Of course there is a reason. Everything you say is in print forever. Act like a twat in chat, you'll be dealt with. The other reason is it's the only way to archive.

It's a pretty ghetto way to archive chat, but since chat is a forum extension maybe you're right, it's the easiest way to archive chat. I know on a wiki it's possible anyone could edit a page and censore theirselves. But then again if you were familiar with wiki's you'd know that you can set pages to be edited by sysops and admins only. I don't really get why you need to archive everything in chat anyway. I'd say archive a day at most in case of rules violations. Noones gonna read the rest.

There are times that I search the chat. The archive is useful.

No, it's THE ONLY way to archive it. As you clearly know nothing of Taigachat, please stop making suggestions and telling us it's a backwards way of doing things. It is the only way. You don't need to keep repeating your opinion. We heard you. Nothing's changing.

Borman sho0uld have a say too. If he don't want shoutbox results showing up when he's looking for proto info in the forum then maybe it should be considered. I couldn't even tell if anyone had made a thread about proto Jet Moto cause the first 3 pages of results were mostly shoutbox entries, and then most of them weren't even about Jet Moto, they were either about someone saying Jet or Moto, not Jet Moto. I just had to make the thread without knowing. I imagine there'll probably be more Fear Effect 3 threads cause people searched for it and their results were flooded with shoutbox chatter. Imagine how bad it's gonna get in a few years when the first results are all shoutbox stuff cause noone talked about Fear Effect 3 in the forum for a couple years.

During the search you can select "Search Topics Only" to rid the shoutbox results.

Well, that'd work if the topic has the words you wanna search for in it. Next time I'll remember that.

Semi drunk reply. There is Siropu chat. This has a built in archive much like CYB Chat from the vBulletin days. It's $29.99 plus $15 or something to renew a year. I can link you a live demo to my site using it later if you wish. (Message me tomorrow if possible. I doubt I'll remember tonight. :p)

Now I know you're talking crap. The search ignores three-letter words - there's no way it showed you results for jet.

Well, people won't have bothered to use Fear Effect 3 as a tag, so that's their problem. Again, 3 won't show up because it's under 3 characters. And, to be honest, imagine people in a few years actually wanting to search Fear Effect 3! ;-)

Now, as I keep saying, the immediate solution is for users to make relevant posts with relevant titles and use relevant tags. I see you're a prime offender who doesn't bother... so don't complain when your threads aren't found! For example, you could have tagged this "Jet Moto", PS1, PlayStation, EGM, 1996, beta, screenshots ....but you didn't bother.

If you'd done that, people could do a tag search. And, guess what? The shoutbox isn't tagged! So it won't show up!

How does one go about writing his own xenforo addon? It's php right?
This kind of modification should be kinda straightforward as long as xenforo is well coded, unless it is purposely blocked?

[ADMIN NOTE: currently unavailable]. But a wiki isn't a place for a shoutbox archive either... That stuff should go into, dunno, an IRC logfile or something. Or we could just treat the shoutbox as a transient medium and not log anything at all.

The rules still apply in the shoutbox, so moderators need a way to verify allegations after the fact. A kind of log is thus mandatory.

My earlier question about writing your own addon was an honest one and I'm still interested. It might become a small personal project to learn PHP better.
