That's what I've heard :/ they have a pretty good return policy, so I originally just picked up the tool to see if it worked any better than my solder sucker. If it did (which it definitely does, surprisingly), $12 isn't too bad, even if I have to replace the tips frequently. If not, back it goes.

It would be neat if a third party made a better tip.

Mystery of Convoy is really awful. I know this ain't breaking news, but it really is - it's impossible to play, not even "trash-fun". Not worth any money, just buy the dirt cheap Japanese version or play it on an emulator.

This site has what I believe to be some of the last good ironclad RadioShack desoldering tips. I was driving by that part of California, so I went over and picked up a bunch to waive the shipping fee. I haven't tested them yet, but everyone online says these are much better than the current tips. I picked them up for $1.50 per tip.

Also, is there a big difference between the Earthbound prototype and the Japanese translation of Mother? I know they are pretty much the same game, but which one, in your guys's opinion, is "better"?

I hate to keep asking questions, but I was also curious about VS Duck Hunt. I see that one of the sites has it for sale (retrozone), but have any of you guys made it? Two player Duck Hunt sounds very intriguing.

I don't believe anyone ever did a fan translation of Mother, the only translation released was the prototype afaik. Theres the 'easy' patch from starmen.net, and the sprite restoration, but no alternative translations I'm aware of

also retrozone uses custom hardware in his VS repros

Doh! You're right about Mother; for some reason I thought I had a translation.

Too bad about the custom hardware. It does look like he builds pretty awesome stuff though, maybe I'll just buy it off him… Along with those Mario refrigerator magnets!

I wish he would produce more mapper variant boards for purchase, but I can see why he wants to keep it close to his chest to keep sales locked down

    Pictures? :)

I just got Japanese Super Mario Brothers 2 working! Now I just need to figure out a label. They're plenty online; I just need to figure out a good printing solution. What do you guys use to remove the old labels?

And thanks for the recommendations, deseoparadise!

I haven't done a label yet so not much to see

edit: note that you cannot repro this game with anything other than a famicom donor, I used fire emblem gaiden rather than famicom wars.

afaik the hardware difference is that Fire Emblem initializes WRAM at boot and has an additional chip to protect the WRAM circuit

So that's why the cartridge is really long! Did you use one of the Famicom adapters out of some of the older NES games, or did you make one yourself?

it's a gyromite adapter, I wish someone was actively producing the adapters. The adapter is two parts though, it isn't hard wired to the bottom cart slot part, they can be separated

I'm surprised no one is making one; it seems like a pretty simple device, and retro gaming is on the rise.

I really need to build test boards with sockets, it's kinda disheartening when I build a repro only to get a black screen, be nice to atleast know my EPROM does work in the test cart

we should really just make this a repros thread.

    some notes I learned today:

Pin 30 does not need to be attached if you are using 1mbit eproms, it is only needed for 2mbit, so you can ignore it on the nesdev wiring info otherwise

If using 27c101 chips, you need to bridge Pin 31 and 32 in order to supply +5v

Don't use 27c101 chips for CHR. They work fine for PRG, but are apparently too slow for CHR use. I wired a 27c101 for a Recca cart and had graphic issues, replaced with 27c010 and all works fine. Using a 27c101 for PRG

Picture of my Recca cart running, and a gold EB0 I did last night. I'm using a custom Recca Pure rom, I restored the original CHR tables and removed some intro text hacking the original romhack had, I also restored the original logo palette rather than keeping the green version.

Pin 30 is no connection, so it shouldn't matter if that is hooked up or not. It is kind of interesting why so many guides ask for that to be routed to something.

As for the 101 chip problem:
    http://www.nintendoage.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=22&threadid=57913

At the end of the topic, they said that if the PGM pin is connected to +5 V, everything should be dandy, as long as the ROM is no slower than 200 ns. They have the same problem as you in the beginning.

And yeah, the topic should probably just be changed to "General Reproduction Discussion" or something lol.

You need Pin30 on 27c020's, it isn't NC on those. I'm guessing the guides were written as a coverall since TSROM boards do have 256kb maskroms sometimes, while other boards might not on retail level go that high, etc.

And yeah, for PRG the 101's should be fine as their access speed is still not slower than the CPU. NA believes they aren't appropriate for CHR because the PPU runs faster, and given what happened on my Recca build, I'm inclined to believe them. I have a ton of 101's lying around since the ebayer I (and seemingly alot of people on NA) buy from sells mixed 101 and 010 lots for pretty reasonable
