Yeah region free would be amazing. But piracy sucks :(

I really like how the current 3DS exploit is region free only, but doesn't play roms :)

But not always does piracy suck. Piracy boosted sales of the PSP by a significant amount. And developers were still able to make decent money.

My Wii U is sitting around on 5.3.2 hoping that this will actually be a thing. Thanks for the share.

I disagree. Sure it may have boosted sales of the system, that makes sense. But it undoubtedly made the developers loose money, which is bad for the consumer in the end. The Wii U already has it rough, worst case this will end up destroying the system altogether.

I would say the only console for which piracy worked in its favor would be the original PlayStation. Widespread enough to give the console a huge following, but not easy enough that everybody and their kids could do it.

With easy softmod hacks and widespread information spreading via the internet, I doubt piracy would work in anyone's favor anymore.

Besides, our consumerist culture is basically making piracy rather pointless for most people in the first world. Games get really cheap relatively quickly. Why would I waste days downloading the Uncharted trilogy, when the local gamestore could be selling all three games for $10?

Anyone with a decent connection would at the most take a few hours I myself could download it in around an hour. What will you do if this next generation of consoles go completely digital? What you wont buy any games as it will take "weeks" to download a game according to you, as games aren't getting smaller they are getting bigger. Piracy will never be pointless, doesn't matter how much something costs.......there will always be the people who think it's to much.

I really do hope that physical games continue to be made. If it's digital only, it could just disappear like P.T.
It looks like GameStop could be doing better, their new policy only allows physical games in console bundles.

Is this an argument for piracy? Sorry it's not clear to me.

Price just isn't a justification for stealing. If you (people in general, not you) don't want to pay for your games, you don't deserve to play them. It's just that simple.

Please remember that we have developers on this very forum, respect their work. Pay for their games.

Without rampant piracy, I would have never become a paying customer myself. In my younger days, I was broke and pirated everything. Music, movies, games, tv shows, design programs, operating systems, left and right... I learned much from stolen content that I would have never been able to afford/be exposed to otherwise. Somewhere along the way, money to spend came along. Out of gratefulness for that knowledge I previously received and out of respect for developers, I decided.. no more. These days, I slowly buy that which I once stole..

If you have no money and pirate, it's unethical theft.
If you have money to spend but pirate anyway, that's greedy unethical theft.
If you sell softmodded Xboxes on craigslist and charge $100 extra for the "600 old games on the HDD", you're just a f**king d**k and I will flag you as soon as I see you.

I like to have the games legit but then again if I can have a console that can play bootlegs I do it and I'll explain, most of the time I download a game or borrow it before buying it legit to see if the game is good. Some people say play a demo and for me a demo is not enough. I bought games because I played a demo that was promising and then the full are completely garbage, example Aliens colonial marines. If I can download a game to try it and is good for sure is a buy. That save me a lot from buying garbage games.

Look, we realize people pirate things. Whether now or in the past. But keep it to yourself, it isn't something to feel proud of.

In a perfect world this would come out when the WiiU is phased out for a new console.

Personally I think piracy is fine under certain conditions, the most obvious one would be if that is they ONLY way to get to play it. Others being if a company that made it is gone, or otherwise can't get it outside of the second hand market. And of course just as a sort demo, but this one REALLY depends on what type of person you are. And of course as backups for games you already own.

The upside of piracy at the end of the day is that is shows the audience more games that are fun, that you otherwise won't play.
I'd also like to state, as a dev, that piracy isn't theft. At best it's copying (granted it's semantics), and for some reason a lot of people seem to think, in general, that a pirated copy = 1 lost sale while in reality it's probably far closer to 0.1 lost sale in most cases.

The bigger issue with game piracy is how easily available it would be. Take for instance the DS, here in Holland, nearly every kid had a flashcard for it and most smaller electronics places sold them for a while which made a big hit in game sales for the DS (but possibly did help with console sales). However looking at the PS3 and Wii where you first needed to find someone to actually mod it (as parent) it was a far smaller issue (not to mention mandatory updates for newer games also helped fighting it).

This is useless to me since the release of Super Mario Maker. The community is all that matter in this game.

It will be useful when the WiiU gets replaced by another console.

Hey. Back in the day bootlegs was all we had in russia, you couldn't find licensed games anywhere. Now I buy pirates for my bootleged mega drive :) Surely there's no harm in that. The rare occasions I buy modern games, I buy them on Steam.
