Well, the politeness is a start.... you have to take it to extreme levels. Light their cigarettes, poor their drinks. Think of them as a handsome butler.

I don't require it and in fact when I bother to start traveling the world I'd like to sample whatever local menu items McDonald's does put on their menus for places like Japan and India. However if I decide to live in <insert any country here> for any number of years having some place to go to where the food is just like it was at home would be really nice.

So you're pretty much looking for Butlers' Cafes then? On an unrelated note, Butler's Cafe in Shibuya does have date nights (women pay, western men get in for free)... :-$

To everyone who complains about Japan's unauthentic approach to foreign food, take a look at how "authentically" Asian food is typically approached in the US/Europe.
    End of conversation :p

Hosting is basically doing this for a couple hours at a time:

The best scenario is a semi-formal (not too lowbrow, not too pretentious) atmosphere where you can make good tips and have a solid chance of being outnumbered by hostesses on any given night.

Chinese food in America is 99% done by Chinese. So, it's their fault if it's wrong. Japanese food is often done by Koreans... and sometimes Japanese. While it may not be authentic, I've never seen Japanese people laugh at Japanese food in America. In fact, if you go to Hawaii, the fucking Japanese tour buses line up at Japanese restaurants all over the island. :-/

Westerners doing Asian food in their respective countries also don't try to kill it with Mayonnaise.

I'm pretty sure the japanese are on the same level as the western world on terms of variety.
We like the same things and we are both tired of the chinese screwing us over And stealing our ideas.
This acctually came into discussion at my house why the sega of america/japan issue came up japan was probably over parniod about china stealing thier tech cause once they get ahold of it your screwd lol.

On a minor thread derailing I have a jamiacan american friend and he said "the japanese love jamiaca" lol but who dosnt.

That's kind of a broad statement -- in what regards? On a consumer level, I would say not, mainly due to lack of floor space. Foods you can get in a grocery store in the US is... a little intimidating. Super markets even in the cuntry side here are miniature by comparison. However, since a huge piece of the cuntry lives in a small geographical area, there is a lot of variety... it just may not be convenient.

True dat. Got a dutch friend living in the US. We went on a man date for steaks and whiskey (well, I had fish... don't eat meat) and he had to ask for Mayo for his fries. Ugh. If it was a first date I'd have walked out. Haha.

I actually love what they do to western food. Yoshoku cuisine looks delicious and I love that Japanese culture allows the integration of other cuisines to the local cuisine making it a unique blend.

How much of it have you actually had? If you pay up, you can get excellent food. This isn't want we're really talking about though... we're talking about a more "normal" meal you'd get in an average restaurant.

Gabriella's has healthy portions. Their coriander salad has more coriander than you see in a Japanese grocery store!

What is it with so many murricans hating on mayo?

Ketchup on fries works in a pinch, but if mayo is available at all it's no contest, really.
(Then again, as a side to a steak, I think I'd just have taken those fries plain.)

It's 100 percent true, but the result is more intentional than anything else. They could serve dishes up to traditional Chinese tastes, but they understand most westerners won't eat anything unless it's deep fried and covered in red sauce. It's the same with Canadian Chinese restaurants too. Lots of Chop Sui and random junk Chinese people don't normally eat, but Canadians come in droves to shovel it down.

I've noted that some bigger restaurants actually have two menus. An English menu with North Americanized dishes and a Chinese written menu with more traditional dishes. I've seen people complain that they were not given the choice of the Chinese menu, nor did the waitress offer to translate it for them, but I think that was in the minority.

Actually, a lot of my non-Chinese friends tell me they judge the quality of a Chinese restaurant by the amount of Chinese that actually visit. If all you can see is Caucasians, then stay away if that isn't your thing.

Probably goes for restaurants of any ethnicity. I try to hold Indian restaurants to the same rules, but most Indians here are working in those restaurants. :?
