Quake 3 is still my ultimate choice. Plus seeings as there is a client for a ton of different OSs everybody I know can play.
Farcry and Pariah on the original xbox, were, in my opinion fantastic FPS titles and very under-rated as well as XIII
I played UT3 on the ps3 a few months ago (With bots) and I can say that the game did feel satisfying to a certain degree - the level design wasn't what I m used to from the likes of Quake 3 but I guess adapting is necessary. I ve also played Quake4 on the PC (as a Q3 alternative since net-cafes' nowadays don't do Q3 for some reason) and I can say that it's a satisfactory substitute to a certain extent. As much as I love my consoles there's no denying that an FPS, in the manner they are made nowadays, must be played with a mouse and a keyboard. Games like Doom and Duke could more or less be experienced pleasantly with a controller. The Wii remote is certainly an interesting approach - although it would take a Quake 3 port to really convince me of its complete merits in a multiplayer online environment.
Multiplayer: Counter-Strike: Source and CS 1.6 Battlefield 1942+Secret Weapons of WWII BF2+BF2 Special Forces BF2142+Northern Strike Day of Defeat and DOD: Source Team Fortress Classic and TF2 Quake III Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory Tribes 2 (shame hardly anyone plays it these days) Single Player: Half-Life plus all the expansions Half-Life 2 Duke Nukem 3D Wolfenstein 3D Thief II Deus Ex Painkiller System Shock and System Shock II
Unreal, played the one on the original xbox alot and was IMOH really good at it, also got UT2003 on the pc. Any FPS thats more geared toward just running around fast as you can and killing as many enemys untill you reach the end of the level is more what i like since i can just jump in and have some instant fun. I do like more realistic FPS as well but only when i can sit down for a few hours to play them.
No if's, but's or maybe's...end of story it HAS to be the Half-Life (franchise, past, present and future)
Quake 3 for me, I'll probably play this one forever. 2nd best: Return to Castle Wolfenstein (that atmosphere!)
For me, UT99 and UT3 are my absolute favorite shooters. I liked Halo 2 for its multiplayer, but i have to say i was REALLY disappointed by the Halo 3. Just doesnt have the same feel that Halo 2 did. I did play a lot of Gears of War however, hours a day for about 8 months ( And ive got every achievement for it as a result :icon_bigg. Wow i have no life.) Quake 3 and Goldeneye, along with UT99, will never get old to me though. Also, I second that you should put up a Q3 server ASSEMbler, id join you guys on that, would be great fun actually.
There's a distinct lack of love for Quake 1 in this thread. I love that game. Single player, multiplayer, whatever platform, whatever controller, it's all good. (Caveat: no, I won't play the Saturn port. Ugh.)
Multiplayer: Crysis (it used to be fun but now there are cheaters on all servers) Call of Duty 2 and 4 Counter-Strike: Source and CS 1.6 BF2 TF2 Quake III Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory Single Player: Half-Life Half-Life 2 Duke Nukem 3D Wolfenstein 3D Bioshock Painkiller DOOM Call of Duty 4
Doom 2 S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Deus Ex Portal Half Life 2 I'm not into MP games because they tend to become boring quickly, and short of joining clans (a big :noooo: from me) one cannot expect disciplined behaviour from his cohorts.
