Cool, I just don't like it when people bash it when it really does deserve SOME credit, it really does. I know exactly what you mean though, I can't stand the Halo hardcore fans but I am a big fan of the serious. I grew up playing all those FPS too, so yeah. My favorite FPS are mostly the PC ones really, but Halo does play quite a bit differently. You are right about the melee thing, but it also adds a dimension to the game. For instance, as much as I love HL2, I didn't like HL1 when it came out, but thats my taste, it definitley contributed to games as a whole, especially with modding and etc. I don't know why I feel like defended the Halo series since I hate 2 (thats 2/3 I like) but I dunno.

I would say my favorite FPS are Doom, Quake, Unreal style ones. I love that so much, you really don't see those type anymore but then again a few years ago the oversaturated everything.

I do need to play Dues Ex. I didn't really have access to a computer when it came out and didn't know anyone that had it.

You know, I always wondered this. Perfect Dark was one of the first FPS I played where you actually see weapon reload animations. I know some FPS did it before on PC but a lot of FPS before had the whole one gun has X amount of ammo vs xx/xx ammo. Just thought about that the other day. Then again I was mostly PCless in that period. I still love PD, just wish it didn't run like crap. The gameplay is a bit aged though, I dunno if you could do that again now. That game had so many fucking weapons and alt fires and stuff.

If you really think about, FPS have evolved a lot.

I really wish UT3 on 360 wasn't crappy, it just sucks to play. I'm not a keyboard vs mouse person, yeah some games kb+m is better but I can do fine with a controller, but for Unreal and Quake and stuff you really do need a keyboard and mouse...., well, a mouse anyway. I have no buds who have UT3 for PC.

From what I read it still doesn't play the same. Plus I don't have a PS3...and don't know anyone who does, so I'd still be screwed.

LEFT 4 DEAD.....the last FPS that i've truely truely enjoyed.

I'm a big FPS fan but my love for the genre was starting to die out when people slowly stopped playing QUAKE 3=(

The whole FPS genre was being saturated with so many crap titles. The last innovative thing was to introduce ONLINE Co-OP. But even this had been done before. I dont know what the earliest online co-op was but i remember Quake 2 had a CO-OP mode that made playing FPSs that much more fun.
Halo came into the console FPS market offering splitscreen (maybe system link also, i dont remember) co-op. This was amazing.

But now a lot of the FPSs are coming out with a CO-OP mode.
so once again this is being used to death! And not in a good way...

But yeah LEFT 4 DEAD PC or 360, in my opinion i think its a perfect FPS.
It is not graphically amazing (doesn't need to be)
It runs really smoothly and its fast paced...or well it can be you can be as fast or as slow with it as you want to be.
Online is done perfectly. Offering 4 player online co-op (yes halo 3 offered this but I AM A HALO 3 online fan, but the co-op story was POOR)

Melee has been in PC FPS since their inception - Wolf3D had a knife. I'd say the chainsaw is pretty integral to Doom, as well, and the gauntlet is a big part of Quake 3.

Tactical use of grenades was absolutely vital in Quake deathmatch, I used to have a config full of aliases to switch to the grenade, fire, and then back to the rocket launcher. Quake has melee too, incidentally, but outside of showing off it's not much use for anything (though I have to say, killing an ogre with nothing but the axe makes you feel like a hard motherfucker).

Actually I think the game that Halo owes most to is Goldeneye, which isn't a PC game anyway. Thematically they're completely different, obviously, but the gameplay is quite reminiscent.

The point is, Halo was a polished evolution of what had come before, which is why PC folk tend to roll their eyes when kids for whom Halo was their first game act like it invented the genre. I don't think anyone here is honestly saying it's a bad game; hell, I've played them all, and completed the first. I just don't rate them as anything special, and I certainly don't think they deserve the level of praise they receive.

I might sound like I'm just slogging off a popular game here but I really don't get Left 4 Dead. My PC playing friends have put hours and hours into that game, and so far I have played it a good hour or two on PC and 360 with people and it gets so god damned boring after awhile. It's like a professionally done mod or something. The people I know who bought it on 360 haven't touched it since a few days after its release. I just know for 50-60$ I don't think it was that great, but it certainly does have the co-op thing down, got to give it that.

    LOL

anyways, Left 4 Dead. it's not fun until you play it on expert. the game gets really deep and there's a lot of advanced techniques you need to master before you can beat the campaigns. the more you play it, the more you discover it's little details that make it amazing. i don't know if you've played the multiplayer, but it's a blast!

To be honest i don't think of FPS as the new platform games they are more like the new top down shooters (Commando, Alien Breed, ect...). The genre is getting very stale though the last FPS's i really enjoyed were COD4 and Halo 3. Both these games had some great set pieces and you really felt like you were helping/being helped by the NPC's, They may not provide anything new but they do take existing idea's and implement them wonderfully. As for Multi-player COD4 is the game i always return too (almost daily) i just can't get enough of free for all.

    1. Lot's of people

    2. No idea i haven't read Edge for years

    3. Duke Nukem 3D (Xbox Live)

    4. Halo

    5. In terms of companys farming them out as quick as possible then yes.

Yeah, but dont even think of doing it with bots.

L4D's bots are great, but once you go into advanced they act retarded, fleeing the scene instead of killing the hunter/smoker thats holding you down. And lets not talk about the fucking tank: even in advanced its almost bulletproof, and the witch owns your ass with just a fingernail.

It beats playing TF2 alone though:lol:;-)

oh yeah, you gotta play with 4 people. even with 3 the game can be garbo. at first we would do fine until we got to a tank. we used to not be able to kill them at all. but with a lot of teamwork, we can take them down. they're still really difficult, but not impossible. witches, don't even touch them. the bots always seem to though... :banghead:

FPS's just fall into the same catogry as popular music and recent Denzel Washington Films. They require very little outside the box thinking. You just regergitate (?sp) the previous effort and (if we are lucky) add a tiny bit to it.
Recently i though MirrorEdge was a good twist on the formula, the very fact that there is an acheivment for not using a gun throughout the entire game is a refreshing idea, and while it certainly isnt perfect at least it tried to do something different.
COD4 was a huge sucess due to its online mode and the unlock/rank-up system means it has a huge replay value but the actual gameplay isnt anything new. That said i have spent a huge amount of hours playing online.
The truth of the matter is that until the mainstream gamers stop buying them the games producers will keep on making them.
