I've been playing through it a bit. They are challenging at times, but nothing too impossible. All the videos I've posted are of the story mode :)

I didn't deny that he made some good points, but the one he made in regards to the Splatoon ones was reeking of a hissy fit. He basically took a legit point, and completely overshadowed it with the logic of a temper tantrum. Nintendo definitely screwed up the Amiibos, but crying about it like a manchild won't make any legit points carry more weight. He is saying a toy company is evil while crying and throwing the toys around, while emphasizing that he couldn't get the toy he wanted, and therefore that is why they are evil.

By the way, mine just arrived today. No muss, no fuss, and ordered well after they were announced. Didn't even need a reminder to get them, and I got them online.

There was a demo running in Akihabara the other day, I should've tried it out. I'm probably never going to own a Wii U.

So I tried out the Ranked mode in Splatoon today. Definitely a bit of a learning curve for the new game mode.

Ok, so there are a few issues. My main one involves that the losing team gets absolutely nothing, and loses rank. Not even any money for playing. The winning team gets everything. Also, the game mode is a King of the Hill mode where your team needs to essentially cover the target area for 60 seconds or so. This I'm on the fence about, as while I do appreciate quick games, most games end up being absurdly one-sided. There really isn't much fun, or ways to make a comeback unless a miracle happens. To me, they would be better off with doing something similar to TF2 and their Push maps, where you need to keep pushing into their base and take the control points sequentially. First you get the middle, then move into a square a little bit further into their base, and I guess reward the teams according to # of territories held (like if you hold 2 of the three zones, such as mid, and the zone in your base, you get 2x the reward, plus the rank bonus, while the losing team only gets the 1x territory reward and no rank bonus). But, that's just me. It's definitely different than the fun, splatter everywhere game mode, that's for sure. This one really forces you to fight the other team directly.

Good to see Nintendo has a new hit, but for me personally I have no interest in it at all...

This could mean Nintendo is willing to take more chances ON GAMES not just hardware

I've been playing this for a few days now. My only gripe with the game is getting stuck on a team of three rollers. It might as well be an instant loss when this happens as you're the only long range shooter. Other then that pretty fun game.

I remember people in the demo complaining about the roller being OP, but now it's not OP at all?

No, it's pretty OP at times, but people are learning to counter it.

If you use a short range splattergun, you are screwed. However, the Splattershot Pro and the sniper wreck it.

The demo was a low level test, with the only really viable weps were the splattershot jr and the roller, and the roller tends to beat newbies and the short range jr. Now that higher level weps are out, there are ways to counter it. Think of the Roller as the Pyro's flamethrower. Wrecks anything short range, but hit him from range and they are wrecked.

Gotta disagree a little. Any rapid fire weapon can handle a roller by walking backwards and shooting. If a roller surprises you though you're dead.

If you're using a Charger you probably shouldn't be somewhere a roller can get to easily to begin with.

From what I've found, Chargers and the sniper rifles are very, VERY ineffective in Turf Wars and the Ranked mode. Yea they can get you a kill, but this game is very much geared for run and gun, much more so than most shooters out there.

And yes, that was kinda my point about the rollers. Once people found out how to deal with rollers, aka, when given more time than a couple hours of an open beta, they became much less of a threat, but still can be effective when used right. Just like the Pyro in TF2. You use it to cover an area quickly and effectively, and for ambushes. The rapid fire guns do work well, though the longer the range of the rapid fire, the better. Yea, the splattershot jrs and the MG ones can work great, you don't want to be near a roller, even when backpedaling.

Sounds like somebody needs to git gud to me! But in all seriousness I fail to see how this is an issue, Maybe it's just my belief that you actually need to win something to win an award but meh to each their own.

Watch my video before you say "git gud" :p I only lost my first one, as I completely brainfarted on that the game mode itself was different from Turf War. Winning the next three didn't change my opinion, and I just wasn't having any fun even in winning and dominating the other team.

I have no issue with the winners getting a lot, but there needs to be something for the losing side. That's waht the money is. Winners get a jackpot and rank up. Losers lose rank, and get absolutely nothing in terms of money.

I've never liked winner take all stakes, mainly because I hate feeling like I wasted my time, and with the completely random matchmaking you are going to be stuck in a completely failure of a team a good number of times.

Chargers won't get you a ton of points, but they are absolutely critical if you can hold a bottleneck or maintain some high ground. You certainly wouldn't want to use the Charger while trying to hit level 20 or get money, but once those issues are out of the way they can be an integral part of the team.

In my mind the ideal Splatoon team would be:
    Charger
    Splattershot/Gal/N'Zap
    Roller
    Aerospray

Two folks to ink up the ground, one person to fight on the ground, and one person to fight from above.

It's unlikely a Charger will be ranked at the top after a match, but they can certainly help win one if used effectively.

That said, I still can't figure out the point of the paintbrush. Seems like such a useless weapon, but some Japanese folks on there can be pretty deadly with it. Also wish the N'ZAP had a better special attack...

Even in a corridor map like Port Mackerel, when I see a charger camping a tight hallway, I just toss a grenade and move my way forward. They cant get a good charge off at all. And even if they do get shots off, I just drop down into squid form and dash around them. Their turning and movement is slowed to a standstill while charging, so they miss one shot I go in and pummel them. In Turf Wars, they are a waste of a spot in all honesty. Granted, they can have use in the ranked mode Splat Zones, as you only need to be in one spot, but even then, I would take someone with a rapid fire wep anyday.

The paintbrush is a rushing weapon. It's very good to get somewhere quickly, as you move as fast as swimming without needing to swim. Not even close to the stopping power of a roller, but it makes up for it with crazy speed and the ability to spread ink all over the place quickly.

Port Mackeral is in no way shape or form the ideal place for Chargers. That's probably the worst map for them since there aren't well defined choke points or much in the way of high ground.

In that case, I just dunk myself down, and flank the hell out of the very slow, very unable to turn charger, as anything but a corridor is easy pickings. The Port is nothing but thin corridors and choke points, so they can just hang out and spam down the tunnels, or on the raised sides of the few wide areas. And even then, there are easy ways to counter them.

In regards to high ground? Dunk, move around their straight line of fire, grenade. Or if I really want to have some fun, inkstrike! :D

Even on a map with a nice perch like the Skatepark, the one advantage it may have gets outclassed by anyone who has any form of situational awareness. The game really rewards faster characters and the ability to rapid fire.

@K7Sniper Watched part 1 of your Story Mode coverage yesterday while exercising. I liked it. Question: Can you really only aim by moving the GamePad? No way to remap that?

You can turn off motion controls but I do not recommend it. It feel kinda goofy to aim with analog sticks.

It took me good 10 hours to get used to the gamepad but once you get used to its actually pretty good.
