Wow man... you sure you don't want to put ads on the site somewhere? That would pay your costs, easily. (waiting for whole forum to gang up on me)
Kammedo´s idea sounds very reasonable, just let everyone donate $2 to $5. I don´t think anyone would mind.
this is not acceptable. i think that the time has come to insert some kind of subscription fee for al the users... it's the only way to have the place breaking even and grow. i guess that adding any kind of new feature would inflate costs even more, and i now understand why the features are in a standstill. in any case i would gladly pay a yearly fee to keep things going smoothly, relieving kev's financial burden, and get extra features. karsten
How about a basic & expanded service site? I.e. anyone who really isn't participating in the site can read the boards and post within specific areas, whowever those who choose to join the site & pay a small yearly fee can get the expanded services version (such as marketplace). It would also mean that you could ensure that less snooping occurs, you'd have more control over the site and it might begin to pay for itself rather than be a money pit.
I think a yearly subscription would be a good idea. I know I'm not really a active member, but I would gladly pay $5 or what ever to be able to use this site. I'm quite sure everyone could affored $5. It would be just like buying someone a beer in the pub, an Ebeer. but without the beer and the pub.... I'm not sure where I'm going with this so i'll stop.
I agree that we should try to ease to help Kev out with the server costs and would personally have no problem with a yearly/quarterly/monthly/what-ever fee. Though I do understand that it can be hard for the studying or unemployed members.. but if enough people chip in it should be to high in the end.
A line of three or four Google ads at the bottom of the page would generate $400 - $600 a month on a site that gets as much traffic as Assemblergames.com. I know everyone hates ads, but are they really that distracting? Just thought I would throw that out there.
A few non intrusive ads at the bottom of the page wouldn't be a bother to me (or most other users i assume). Note the non intrusive part.
I wouldn't mind ads, really. Just depends on what they were advertising I guess. Anyways, I have like $11 something in Paypal I wasn't really using, how do I send that over?
Hold off for now, I appreciate the offer though. It's always the same people giving, and that is the problem.
Why does it cost that much? Whats the breakdown of the cost? I'm curious how much giant websites cost.
Quite a bit Id imagine. Ive been shopping around for a server, and from what I know, its around 100$ for 100-150 connections active (Meaning accessed at the same exact time), maybe a bit more if tweaked a bit, on one of the lower end dedicated servers. Considering right now, theres almost 900 people on at this second (Though its not 900 people accessing files at the same exact time, its still a lot), I can only imagine hah
