Can you think of a game genre that was once huge and is now no longer being made? Music games with plastic guitars and instruments is one. Motion control games using a wiimote is another (Kinect will stay around for Durango and the last ps move game wishbook was released this year).
theres not enough lightgun style games these days, and not enough spaceship shmups, also not enough good beat em ups streets of range / double dragon style. looks like platformers are making a comeback though
theres a few yes like death smiles and underdefeat HD but alot of them are digital distro only and i prefer physical copies and the games i mentioned are not actually spaceship shooters. also some are region locked which is a pain in the ass
Dude, quite a bunch of great localized shmups on the 360 that are available in physical copies. I do not care THAT much wheter you control an actual spaceship or a half naked manga girl riding a giant insect, as long as the game is good. I personally have Raiden IV, Raiden fighter jets and Mushihimesama futari. Looking to get more in the future but i already dont have enough time to enjoy all the games i have so not in a hurry.
I guess I considered games that required special controls their own genre in a way. Music beat games still live on just not the peripheral ones. As for the wiimote I think now that wii u is out that the wiimote games are pretty much done even though wii u is backwards compatable. But yeah light gun games are gone! And Puzzle Bobble maze games (beginning with pac man) are definitely extinct.
rarel seen advertised or on the shelf in a game store have to root around online for them and at that the prices are normally higher raiden iv for example searching ebay, only 1 localish copy, and fighter aces again just 1 listing for a silly price £81 shipped but i see the listings for canada and usa have them much cheaper and in greater numbers. but again some of these games are region locked some are not. and yeah its how good the game is that matters but i still prefer spaceship shooters over them weird manga style ones although theres nothing at all wrong with playing with half naked manga girls
Platform games - Alex Kidd, Megaman, Contra, Earthworm Jim,... Beat-'em-up games - Streets of Rage, Final Fight, Captain Commando, Caddilacs and Dinossaurs, Double Dragon,... Arcade racing games - OutRun, Cisco Heat, OutRunners, Cruisin'USA,... Graphic Adventure games - Snatcher, Policenauts, The Dig, Full Throttle,...
Agree on lack of high quality beat'em ups. For adventure games - there's quite a few good ones, not in something like Full Throttle or Policenauts but still good games. BTW And Beneath A Steel Sky sequel is coming after all. Еarthworm Jim... new HD 2D EWJ = epic win. Same for Contra. Not some low-poly remake, like Rocket Knight (it's not that bad but i prefer original game), but something with true high-res 2D graphics with modern lighting effects. But it will never happen.
Flight sims Racing sims: never exactly huge, but the only ones really left are rFactor + all the games running on that engine and iRacing. No, Forza and GT don't count. And nowadays too many shmups are bullet hell games with half naked little anime girls.
