Every kind of shmup is alive and well. Bullet hell, manic, methodical, you name it. Many of them are independent/PC/import only, but they exist. Side scrolling beat-em' ups are a niche game product now, but one or two come out each year. Side-scrolling shooters like Metal Slug, Contra, Etc are also still getting produced. Again, look at PC imports from Japan. Robotron, Smash TV, and Total Carnage live on as Geometry Wars. A genre that's really dead is something like the older style arcade racers. Stuff like Pole Position, Hang-On, Outrun, Cruis'n. They just don't have the cult following for people to be demanding new chapters, and the indie community seems uninterested. It's a shame too, there is a lot of unrealized potential there, I think.
There was already a new Syndicate ... You should try Nitronic Rush, it's free and heavily inspired by Rush 2049. They also had a Kickstarter for a new, similar game called Distance.
I think this world needs more Space shooters of the 2D Variety like Axelay and Thunderforce (the horizontal type especially), but also, there's a severely depressing dearth of 3D Spaceship combat games - Of the more arcadey variety, like Starfox or Omega Boost or Zone of the Enders (yeah, the remakes are out, I know), or the more serious variety, like Colony Wars or Wing Commander. I was really, really excited for Project Sylpheed - with the GameArts and the Kenichiro Fukui Soundtrack and the pretty Macross/Galaxy Angel style ships - and the Panty-shot in a cinema from the very first mission... but it was a really disappointing letdown. Also the new Star Raiders wasn't that good either. The world needs a good Space combat game, and soon.
I would like too see return to this era some shooters, platforms and arcade type racing games. I love the Sega Saturn because of the awesome game it has of those genres. I remember Ashtal, Clockworth Knight, shooters like Gun frontier, Layer section, racing like Daytona, Sega Rally etc. just to name some. Beat em ups like Guardian Heroes, Dungeons n dragons, Die Hard Arcade even batman forever arcade. Those where great times.
There is a lack of old school beat em ups. they seemed to die out when the 16-bit era ended only a handful on the PS1 and Saturn.
Discworld, I really miss that game. Oh and some games like "Defender of the Crown" or "Barbarian" as they were on Amiga 500
Good combat flight sims: the last Ace Combat was plain bad. Give me a new Crimson Skies, an Ace Combat like the ones for the PSX, but for the love of god not another HawX BTW, don't telltalegames count as point&click?
Futuristic racers throughout the 90s and early 2000s there was quiet alot of them ...... now the maker of Wipeout has apparently Wipedout XD and Extreme G seems gone forever also where the fuck is F-ZERO ? its pretty much 10 years since GX soon and almost 7 years since the last GBA F-zero
Honestly I've never heard of it until now, but I'll probably give it a try since it's about to go public beta.
