Anyone have any games like this? - Resident Evil 0 I must've started a dozen or more new save files over the years, & I always seem to stop right after the train section is done & never play it again until I lose the feel of the game & have to try it again 3 years later. Not sure why, either. Maybe the game just rubs me the wrong way. Never beaten it. - Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 I tried hard to like this game after growing up with the predecessors, but it just has none of the charm of the handcrafted, pixilated, isometric view of the first two. To note, these aren't games that you really "finish", but this one doesn't even grab me for more than 45 minutes. - Half-life 1-2 This isn't because I don't like Half-life, it's just that I don't have much time for it anymore & the fact that I have beaten / modified them to an extreme limit means I feel even more compelled to stop / try something new. - Sonic the hedgehog 2 I basically stop after the third level. That water section in the ruins just pisses me off. I have beaten it numerous times, I just don't seem to anymore. -Secret of Evermore I really like this game, but I think I have only beaten it 3 times. It just doesn't hold me, & I don't know why.
Most of mine are RPGs or Adventure games. If I get lost, or stuck I just give up and move along to another game. I never finished DK64 because of this.
I have a few games every year that I start and don't finish. Just a few: Crysis 3 ( Didn't finish it because it was boring and worse than the previous games, but it still was interesting to play) Game Dev Tycoon ( I do play it once in a while, but never in these 2 years have I've been lucky enough to beat it) Fallout 3 and New Vegas ( I can get 10h-20h of gameplay and then I just lose interest. The main reason is that Skyrim was my first Bethesda game and the game mechanics and game design are hugely better in that game. It's hard to return to something worse when you first experienced something simple and easy) I have more games that I didn't finish, but I return to these ones quite often.
Hmm, I've gotten to the point where (other than one jump at the beginning of Act 2) I can stay dry the whole zone. A lot of platformers that don't have a save feature I don't finish anymore, and I don't think I ever finished FF VIII.
Mugen Souls Z I just stopped after chapter 3 or 4 and downloading countless DLC for it. Fairy Fencer F Stopped after level grinding and announcement of PC version. Hyperdevotion Noire Same reason as MSZ. (I know my list is mostly IF/CH games.)
Japanese games mainly. Dragon Force II, Shining Hearts, Riglord Saga 2, Wachenroader all come to mind. I have beaten a lot more than I've quit. For some there are guides but I don't enjoy that as much as figuring it out.
I know how you all feel. For the longest time, my "start-but-never-finish" game was Chrono Cross. I must have restarted it about six times before I decided it had to be one of those "muscle through" experiences. I usually start off my RPG's really enthusiastically, but Chrono Cross' battle system is a hurdle in and of itself. With respect, it's not a system one can look at for the first time and completely understand. Plus, the probability of the enemy dodging is pretty high, even when choosing the safer attacks. I may contest the battle system, but there's no denying the graphics and music.
+1 on Chrono Cross, though I suspect I don't ever get anywhere with it because I compare it to Chrono Trigger FFVIII, surely I'm not the only person who finds the start of this game painfully dull? I loved IV, VI and VIII. Shadowrun - always seemed like a super cool game, love the look of it, never got more than an hour into it. Trying again now on my eCFW Vita using the debug room to make things a little easier - probably just end up spoiling it for myself, but we'll see. Yoshi's Island, possibly the best game I've ever played, I completed it 100% first time through, and if you've never done it, it requires extreme patience and platform skills I probably no longer have. I re-start it about once a year, but it's just so f-ing hard in places. Poochy Aint Stupid 100% may be one of the hardest gaming challenges ever.
Oh man, you reminded me of my own memories of the game. When I was young, I had trouble getting far in Final Fantasy VIII too. Like Chrono Cross, I had to muscle through it. I'm glad I saw the other half of the game, even though VIII was/is well-known for an odd plot twist as well as a rude main character. As an added story, I spent 45 minutes trying to take out that T-Rex at low levels. I thought it'd lead to a nice EXP payday. Though I defeated the T-Rex, I recall the reward being minor.
I would say, out of the games that I own, I've probably started and never finished about 78.534276% of them. I only finish games that I really enjoy, which is not my entire library. I still enjoy playing parts of some games even if I never finish them. If I really wanted to start and finish every single game I own, it would take a long time. I also have a disturbingly long list of games that I own but have never played (or haven't played since buying them). I often start and never finish Zelda games (Ocarina of Time, specifically), as well as Resident Evil 0 like the original post, and Castlevania games. I've gotten almost to the end of some Castlevania games but never finished them.
Also Resident Evil 0, Survival Horror is my favorite genre but damn never seem to finish this one. On that note Silent Hill 3, I love it and I try even following guides but always seem to get stuck on some puzzles regardless..........
I can understand that. When I was new to survival horror, I had heard that Resident Evil was really difficult. So, I would do practice runs to the next "objective," then I'd do the best run I could. As long as ammo and health items weren't "wasted" (used), I felt fine saving. That was an exhausting process, but I was much younger then. I did that for all three mainline titles. (I never did play through Resident Evil Survivor.) Even so, Resident Evil CODE:Veronica X didn't hold me well enough to endure that process again. I eventually muscled through the game too, but, I have to say, Resident Evil 4 really reinvigorated the franchise for me. Fun stuff. This thread keeps reminding me of games I had to muscle through.
Pretty much ANY game right now... I start playing it, enjoying it... then I never go back to it. I have easily over 20 games that i've started and not got more than 2 hours play time. Maybe I need a break from gaming for a while or something lol
Take a break for a couple of weeks or months, until you start to miss gaming and then come back to it. It really works ! I had this situation with consoles. For about 4-5 months in 2013, I gamed only on my PC and my consoles didn't get any use. When I returned to consoles, I had new interest for them and they kept me hooked again.
Any large RPG game for sure, only RPG like games I ever finished were Diablo, Deus Ex, and Mega Man Legends. Anything else I get so lost into the other stuff in the game I tire myself out of side stuff to get worn before I make big dents in the main story.
I've started Zelda Majora's Mask. F*cked up my save game just before the last boss. Never had the courage to redo the game. It's been 15 years now.
You can put me in this group. I really need to finally finish HL1. I remember you mentioning this. It's easily the least accessible mainline FF besides maybe II. People were expecting FFVII Part 2. They did confuse the hell out of everybody by making EXP way less important. A pretty polarizing release to come after their best FF (VI) and their most popular one (VII).
