I believe its a 3-7 year business plan by GS. Digital downloads will take over the market, with no physical games in the future there is no need for a GameStop. Block Buster anyone?, GameStop has to go retro or die a slow death.

I have a feeling they will charge absurd prices, higher than eBay. They will say "we have a guarantee that these games/consoles work so we can charge a premium". From what I read, they are planning on having the same warranty on the consoles that they do on used current-gen consoles. This gives them another reason to shoot the prices up. Then eBay prices will go up as well, probably a little below what GameStop is going to offer. I don't see this turning into a good situation at all. Worse is the fact that it will be an online service only, so we won't even be able to see the condition of the items like you would in a store.

I've seen SMB/Duck Hunt cartridge for $10 in a retro game store, which to me is absurd. I can see GameStop charging the same or above.

They probably charge a high premium so they can offer warranty a lot longer than eBay sellers. But I still won't sell them my turd, they'd probably offer the same as they would to games like Stadium Events and Secret of Mana, 25 cents each. I'll stick with the forum and eBay for selling, and buy from GS only if I needed something right away and not after waiting a few days to a week for delivery.

Also you can figure anything remotely rare from them will be bootleg You really think Gamestop is going to teach its employees how to see if a game is real or that the employees would even give a shit.

GameStop will jack up the price on retro games like crazy and there is no doubt about it. For those hoping GameStop will make retro gaming more affordable, it most likely won't happen.

If any of you still remember when GameStop still carry Dreamcast games, they had no problem charging $119.99 for a USED copy of MvC2.

As of current. GameStop is charging people $55 for a USED copy of Ocarina of Time for the 3DS while the new retail price is only $39.99. here is the URL http://www.gamestop.com/nintendo-3ds/games/the-legend-of-zelda-ocarina-of-time-3ds/89884

Really? Because I got a lot of DC games when they were getting rid of them. MvC2 was I think $15 (disc only, I admit). Hell when they had the deals to get free ones I bought as many as I could. That's where I got classics like Crazy Taxi, Sonic Adventure, and Shenmue.

BTW the minimum price for OoT3D on Amazon is $59 as I check it.

Not to go off-topic, but did you know Blockbuster had the chance to partner exclusively with Netflix and their CEO declined? Also I'm pretty sure there were talks of them exclusively carrying DVDs and they denied that as well.

Who knows what stupid decisions GameStop has made along these lines.

A very good point. Also quite scary. Everyone seems to be screaming about gamestop driving prices up. Maybe in the short term it's a possibility. But if games follow a similar cycle to video nearly everything will be remade or released on virtual consoles, demand will collapse and the retro market will implode. Sure, you'll have a few guys who play some NES on their 4:3 CRT and then watch a LD on their 4:3 CRT because that's the way God intended But most of the kids (even the 30 something ones) will opt for the shiny new toys.

Earthbound was released on the Virtual Console a year or so ago, and the prices for the cartridge are still high. I think most video game enthusiasts like having a physical copy of the game, not a digital copy. This causes the market be fairly unphased by digital releases. Even with rereleases, like "Greatest Hits" games, don't seem to affect the market for the original game.
I think the prices will never drop, because more people are buying retro games than are selling them, which is removing supply from the market and allowing prices to go high.

If Gamestop had no problem opening new copies of Xenoblade Chronicles on the Wii so they can charge $90 instead of $50, they will have no problem charging Ebay +20% prices and cause the idiots online to think everything is now worth more.

It depends on the game, when Marvel vs Capcom 2 was digitally released (for a while), prices for the PS2 and Xbox versions fell a fair amount (they went down from $50-60 to $20-30, then back up into about the $40s).

This is just one of the reasons they'll end up dropping this whole idea. They don't understand what they are thinking of buying and selling. They think old games are just like current games. They don't understand your point of counterfeiting, as well as the fact that they've changed from being a consumable game into a collectible. For collectible items their condition is extremely important. For the masses with current games you'll find most people don't care as long as it works.

They'll find out it's unprofitable, just doesn't work for them and then hopefully just sell off whatever inventory they've accumulated. It would be a shame if they do an Atari and just throw the stuff away.
