Well, Gears of War is now out, and the reviews are in:

    http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/744/744356p1.html

    Score: 9.4

"Gears of War is a must-have game, pure and simple. Epic has effectively created a new gaming universe, and the rich story of planet Sera holds its own with the likes of Hyrule, City 17 and the Mushroom-friggin'-Kingdom. A game so gorgeous, both visually and audibly, that is this fun to play comes along only a handful of times a console generation."

    Score: 9.6

"To say that Gears of War features 'next-gen' graphics is a gross understatement. It's got the most impressive graphics ever seen in a video game, and the stellar art direction only makes it more beautiful."

"Gears of War is a game that capitalizes on all of the promises made by the next generation of gaming. It looks more than a few steps beyond what consoles have been doing to this point, and the gameplay is supremely fulfilling from start to finish in all of its various modes. While there have certainly been plenty of similar shooters before it, the game's great weapons, amazing graphics, and absolutely thrilling action make it stand out from the pack in a big, big way."

I won't have my copy for around 8 more days (I was lazy and ordered online with 'free' (if your time is worth nothing) shipping) but anyone here have it yet and want to weigh in? Game of the year? Sounds like we finally have a game that lives up to the hype!

*EDIT* For those that haven't seen it in action yet:

Yes, that is infact real time. They aren't kidding about how great this game looks ...

The EGM previews compared it to Halo every step of the way and even had a list of how it would or wouldn't be the next Halo.

They even went on to say the age restriction on GoW would keep the kids away. Wait a second, Halo's rated mature as well. Whatever.

This is the game I've been waiting to buy a X360 for, period.

BTW, after seeing some HD videos it seems that the textures on walls and buildings at a medium distance look kind of blurry (like, N64 blurry).

Is that normal? or more like Halo2's drawing distance?

You thing a halo fanboy is lame? try a mario one: the review at IGN compares the planet sera (from GoW) to the mushroom kingdom from mario bros:rolleyes:

I mean, seriously, is like saying chip ahoy is the same than a swiss chocolate. The complexity of GoW is big, maybe not as big as games like MGS, but way more than mario bros, which like Sonic, lacks a real story from the very beggining.

I have the game, but haven't gotten any serious time outside of the first hour, but I'll still answer any questions tomorrow

As for the bluriness, it has a nice, subtle depth of field effect which is probally what your seeing. The cutscenes have a very cinema verite fell as though taken with a handheld camera and is a touch that adds to the immersion of the game. Some things about a larger story line are already hinted at, and I think fenix may have a past with the female liuetenant.

Played it for 10 hours straight with a friend online today.

This gaming is AMAZING! The graphics are easily the best gaming has seen yet. The multiplayer is the most intense I've ever experienced. And the online co-op was a completel blast!

One of the few times where I honestly feel a game lived up to and surpassed its hype.

From the trailer this looks very impressive ! As good or even better looking that MGS on the PS3. Hmm, 360 really does have some nice titles. Just a shame it sells like shit over here.

I don't know if GoW would be the type of game that would sell (Gameplay-wise) in Japan.

The funny thing is that my PC can't play the HD video at full speed. I had to put the wmv file on a memory flash USB unit and play it on 360 (which wasn't that fluid either - might just be a usb2.0 bottleneck? )

For anyone thats played it, are the environments destructible, AND will the larger enemies try to crush buildings that you are hiding in?

Also, I'm curious as to what the vehicles are. Is it purely a hide and shoot in cover game, or does it have vehicular segments as well?

The game definitely looks amazing, and I'm definitely going to get it once I get an Xbox 360, but thats a pretty long time from now.

Also, has anyone seen the commercial for it? I thought it was a pretty nice change over the normal adverts.

After playing this, I am fairly positive that Metal Gear Solid 4 would have no problem running on the 360. Damn, i'm impressed. There are xbox ports that look like shit that have load issues, yet this game is beautiful and barely has any lag (They must have worked on the code a bit). Gameplay reminds me of Ghost Recon: Advance Warfighter, only bloodier.

Not really, no. I mean, you'll see chunks of concrete flying off, but only rarely can you completely destroy stuff in the environment (i.e. a couch, or dresser... primarily furniture).

And I am yet to see a giant monster destroy a building I'm in. The only giant monsters I fought didn't really move much...

There is a very shitty and horribly done driving sequence in Act II. Other than that (as far as I know, I'm only at the beginning of Act IV), there aren't any driving segments that I've seen.

All that said several friends and I played some deathmatch tonight. That shit is INTENSE!!!!!! Insanely fun too. I can honestly say I think I like the multiplayer more than the main game.

This game looks so freaking good. These are the types of graphics I dreamed of back in the PS1 days. These textures are so darn smooth. This is on a DVD disc. Imagine the types of high rez textures you can put on a blue-ray. Yeah, I know, I'm talking about PS3 here on this Xbox 360 topic. Sorry. In all seriousness. I do agree that these are the best graphics I have EVER seen on a console.
