If fighting his daddy's war wasn't bad enough...
It's clear he's trying for the lowest approval rating; that way he'll be remembered for SOMETHING.

Hey people, shouldn´t we move this issue into the unmoderated thread ? Not to be political correct, since I am the last to give the PC card in the thread. Just a precaution so we can discuss this without being edited and for that matter getting the thread locked ?

Your link was broken, so I fixed it.

I love it when people pull this argument though. Downloading an MP3 is in an entirely different ballpark than physically stealing someone's television set.

When an MP3 is downloaded, the person in question is "stealing" pennies on the dollar from a corporation that pays the artist a small portion of that. I don't think musicians should be making music soley to make money, either, but that's a different argument.

But hey, it's totally fair to pay $250,000 and spend a few years in jail for downloading an MP3, because it's stealing right?

Nevermind the fact that these companies can already take violators to court. This bill just gives the punishment potential to be that much more severe.

I'm just glad a lot of the stuff I like doesn't belong to the RIAA.

No they aren't. The corporation loses nothing when an MP3 is downloaded, no pennies are downloaded from them. Theft is the act of depriving another person of their property, and that does not occur when a file is shared over the internet. It is an idiotic, disingenuous argument propagated by a clueless and terrified industry standing in the headlights of change. Downloading an MP3 is copyright infringement - and there are already acts in place in the US to deal with violators. This new one won't prevent a single MP3 download, but it might criminalise innocent civilians, and even for the guilty, the punishment already vastly outstrips the crime.

I'm in no way advocating piracy, nor am I making excuses for pirates, but I find the immoral and illegal way that the RIAA/MPAA operate far more offensive.

Jesus Fucking Christ, this is horrible. The Intellectual Property laws have gone far off the handle. I really like that part where they can seize all of your computers and handheld devices if a single pirated MP3 is found on one. Doesn't say how they would find them, does it? Probably by using spyware of some kind, or monitioring your downloads in a way that was illegal just a few years ago.

This is like saying if I shoplift a sock, then the government can take all the other clothes I own. Too fucking far.

So, if I download a movie that I can't buy in stores (which I do all the time) now the Department of screwing people over on the internet can take all my stuff? Thanks Bush. Thanks a fucking lot.

The Law is unenforceable. I tried to think how on Earth they could when SO Many people do it. If it's along the lines of They can take your hosue for drugs....then yeah becuase I rarely hear about that happening.

Technically you can get the death penalty for possessing some kinds of porn. It's a feel good law that won't be enforced. Enforcing it would result in the 2nd US Civil War.

Eventually as more and more artists get fed up with the music industry the RIAA will cease to exist anyway making this law even more meaningless.

He runs more of yours than you probably think. Sad, no?

How can the RIAA sue when so many people do it? Well, they do/did.

Oh, it must never happen then. I've never been to a police auction... doesn't mean they don't happen.

Please think for at least 2 seconds before posting. I would love to see a link that states any US law other than murder and treason as punishable by death.

I feel much better now that someone on the internet has assured me of that.

Pretty much. When I have money, I buy things. Unfortunately food, rent, and insurance leaves me pretty broke, so I don't get much of a chance to buy many things. So I turn to the internet.

I understand the illegality of downloading music, but I really only hurt the record companies. I buy band t-shirts and go to their concerts, giving them more money in the end than just buying one album.

IMO, they need to go after the people who download new PC games the day they come out. Before anyone starts "But its only making a copy!" bullshit, Crysis was hit so hard in piracy, the company decided to make console games, because they weren't as hard to pirate. Then again, Fallout 3 Xbox 360 version was on torrent sites like 2 weeks ago. I kid you not. Some morons were even playing it WHILE ON XBOX LIVE. There's some permabanned consoles.

Music companies, IMO, aren't hit that hard in piracy because music CDs don't cost $60+ and tons of people still support the industry. There are tons upon tons of games, but the music industry VASTLY outnumbers it, mainly because it doesn't cost $100,000+ to make a music album, unless you are some kind of superstar. Some people are just so damn cheap, they'd pirate a $10 game that took years to make just because they could.

When a game gets pirated, you're playing something for free that took a long time and a lot of money to make. When you're downloading music, I bet you're listening to like...3-6 months of work, and most of that is printing the Cds, maybe? I don't know much about the music industry to be honest, but I think its safe in assuming that making games takes a lot longer, and gaming companies get hit worse when people simply say "Hmm, this game looks good, I might torrent it":banghead:

I buy a fair share of things at the suggested retail price. Other things aren't really worth paying a full price I think

They made a game that wouldn't run for shit on most people's PC and then wondered why nobody bought it. I don't have a great deal of sympathy, I'm afraid - in future maybe they could make games for hardware that actually exists? Crytek are still making PC games, anyway, but they're going to have a multiplatform approach in future. I don't care either way,to be honest.

Actually, for bands signed to major labels, after studio time, production costs, and promotion/touring expenses, you'd be lucky to see much change from that.
