No offense but "compile with my optimisations and excluding any rubbish" as standard protocol sounds a little farcical. Or maybe I'm just not that guru. The last few posts sum up why I dislike *nix.
Gentoo has USE flags and optimisation flags, you compiled on your system with your libraries specifing the compilation flags and what features should be included, whereas when you use ubuntu, arch, etc. you're getting an already compiled packaged that isn't optimised to your liking and has EVERYTHING compiled with it, so it's about as efficient as windows which is fine for an every-day user, but personally my dual P3 runs gentoo and gnome fine but if I was using ubuntu or whatnot, it'd struggle and run like a slug.
Holy fuck, clicked this thread and expected some related discussion, instead I encounter an argument about which flavour of linux is best? Ok, making the connection.... Apple OS is born of a relatively early version of UNIX Linux is born of the same roots only "purer" (not my words, heh!) Various forks of linux are discussed with a view to them being superior to Apple OS Arguments are made in favor of superiority from both camps An argument breaks out about the technicalities of one LINUX derivative A giant red herring shits all over this thread and all it stands for Xeauron connects and comments trying in vein to make the connection between OP and latest discussion posts. Ok, I think I got it! Cool, and I got to reference myself in the third person. Winner! You see people, you learn to take the rough with the smooth.
Xeauron: If I am allowed to add anything. Then I believe we are just having a lovely, but broad discussion And I just said, Linux was derived from Minix, which is an abbreviation of Mini Unix. And we are not shouting out to every one, that we rock, and they suck. Even though Hawanjas post and rant was about the "Why Pad", which I have never been impressed with at all.
God Damn I hate Microsoft I dont see how people dont mind dealing with this shit, Just installed Windows for the sole purpose of running 3DS Max and I couldnt even reboot to get back to mac os, It had to install 3 updates, didnt give me much of a choice when I turned it off, then it rebooted only to go back to the shut down screen and install 91 updates OH: (I left because the first 3 updates were taking too long, when I got back it had already restarted, so I missed the OS selection) When I got back after my shower it was only at 21st update... ended up flipping the switch on the back, see how well windows works next time I try booting it Really should have given wine (linux mint) a shot before resorting to a full windows install. Anyone know if wine works well enough? I fear incompatibilities and/or sluggishness...
Wine works ok for the most part. But if you are doing computationally intensive tasks, like 3d rendering, I think it is best to have something that runs natively.
There's also crossover games/office that you can check out, crossover is a modifed version of wine, and it's able to run steam and the 3D games fine on linux.
Which in the free version (in Gentoo at least) is known as Gametree Linux (aka. Free Cedega). which according to this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YIuOJANnNJo Can run Skyrim. So something good is cooking And something is called Desura http://www.desura.com/ That should go open source very soon, since it is coming out of beta.
I'm sure many users here will agree with me, but if Windows emulators on Linux started to run games with very quick setup and very little fiddling I'd leave Windows.
For regular apps, you can additionally run your Windows XP under Virtual Box. It has a special integration mode where you can run Windows applications directly on your Linux desktop. Works pretty nifty IMHO.
Depends what you mean by games, Duke Nukem 3D ran first time under WINE which I didn't expect at all. ZDOOM had some trouble (boots but no response from controller) and theres a variant of Wine that runs steam and its games nicely.
