I really love console gaming,or I thought I did. I have a new halo 360 and a new ps3 and they are both sitting in the boxes months later. I play primarily PC games and find that console games just don't cut it as far as sophisticaton. Anyone else using their consoles less? I really can't see myself buying any new systems after this generation of hardware.
You're echoing what I've felt for the past few years. I've bought maybe three PC games this past year. I hate to say it, but "they aren't made like they used to be."
Kev - give us the names of the PC games you've played last yest to set context of the genre you're playing on PC... (I find the 360 really good for instantly diving into a game, PS3 is a dust collector)
I have a 360 and a Wii. I bought the Wii mainly as a party machine because on weekends I have regular family and friend get togathers into the wee hours of the morning. So far its been hit or miss. Wii sports is the best game on the Wii right now and its gotten old. I have actually played Wii in about 3 months now. 360 I find is very good and by far the best next gen experance. I love Forza 2, I am currently OBSESSED with Mass Effect. The story and all the information is presented in such a way that if they make novels set in the Mass Effect universe I will gladly spend all my money on them >_< The story is just that good. Also on the 360 is COD4 , Dead Rising, and Halo 3. All good multi and single player games. In the near future 360 and Wii will both get more play from me as GTA IV and Smash Bros arrive. However I kinda feel the PS3 is left behind in all this (I dont own one but I think it has potential) Now to the PC. It is the greatest gaming machine ever made. I have been hooked on Supreme Commander for about 3 months now. The game is insanely awsome. I dont play online and rarely alone. However at least a couple times a week my best friend comes over and we play on the 2 computers I have set up for lanning. Its some of the most fun I have had with a RTS since StarCraft and the early days of Warcraft III. If you havent tryed it out I highly recommend it. And make sure you get the EXP to it as it adds more graphic flare (already requires a hell of a rig) and it makes the HUD and interface much more user friendly.
considering selling your PS3?=) I have to agree that games are getting a tad repetative these days, and we re just looking for the best possible new execution really with most titles. That said, I m enjoying my Wii most of all game consoles at the moment. The reason? Multiplayer mostly - even single-focused games such as Galaxy. Ikaruga is the star of my bedroom for now when I have friends over, and so is Mariokart 64, Gradius III, and a few other games. On the Wii itself, Wii play, Wii sports, and plenty of others. Can't wait to play Smash Bros though
I had a 360 but got bored of it and have just traded it. Most of my gaming is on the good old PC Engine.
I'm slowly but surely moving away from PC gaming - I used to do it a lot, but since moving in with my girl we tend to play a lot of stuff together. You're right, though, there is a lot more dross games out there - but I disagree that PC gaming is any better than console gaming (apart from in the case of LAN party FPSes - you just can't keep up with a joypad!). There are quite a lot of good long-play games on PC, however, and I feel that consoles just don't do it in the strategy department.
Maybe I'm just strange, but I don't see a philosophical difference between PC and console gaming. Yes, there are technological differences that make ports problematic, but generally I'm attracted to games and not to platforms. I discovered Morrowind on the Xbox, but when I wanted to use mods I had no problem getting a PC copy. I liked Hundred Swords on the Dreamcast enough that I picked up the PC port and now I've got the Total War Eras pack on order. It's easy for me to move around between the two platforms. I agree with Barcode that there's a little too much repetition in games on any platform. The only advice I have is, go with your gut and don't respond to marketing. Play what you want to play, and if that means you're on the PC more right now, that's your call and nobody else's.
Considering we've yet to see what this current run of next generation console really has to offer, I for one am happy to plod along and stumble across the odd interesting title that comes along rather than invest in the 'next game' to appear, which is something a lot of my friends do. They look a list of release dates and just run out and buy titles like sheep! They get a game, sit with it for perhaps an hour or so and then toss it aside, get bored with it, want something else. I'm not entirely convinced they'd know a decent title if it bit them on the ass! I have had a similar conversation with a couple of my friends. Not console v PC gaming, but previous generation of consoles v next generation. I still felt that the PS2, GC & Xbox had a bit of space to run and I tend to spend a bit of time playing on those systems. You perhaps need a break mate!
I mainly play console games because my PC at the moment isn't very good. I had a plan to save up for a brand new gaming PC, but I've been having a LOT of bad luck lately so my Money keeps draining out of the bank as soon as I put it in.
This will keep happening until you take out a large chunk of college money to build the basic desktop (this is what happened to me, anyway). I swore up and down I'd build a computer for about three years. What did it is that I finally sold my TEST PS2 to buy a monitor, then I figured I needed a decent computer to go with it. Here I am almost a year later, with my college money dwindling at an even faster rate. I love my computer though
-I've always bought/aquired the latest console, since consoles existed, year-in-year-out, since at least 1975! (hate to think of the cost, so I won't) -I also used to upgrade/buy a new P.C purely for gaming each year, sometimes twice a year!!!!! (again, thousands of pounds on a couple of gfx cards and a stick of RAM, ouch) Personally, and at long last for me, the Xbox 360 has stopped the need for a new P.C, yippee and phewww!!! *oe dances* (Hey, what shall I do with the spare cash tho? ...I can use the P.C for printing, wow, I knew it did summat useful, heh) ...As for my other ' new' generation consoles, Wii and PS3, well until they can run XBL, or some (not just 1 or 2) decent games, they will sit gathering dust I'm afraid :-(
I've got an OK PC (A64 3500+ @ 2.53GHz, 1GB RAM, GeForce 8400 @ 660\330MHz), but I much perfer playing on my 360. No settings worries, higher resolution, and it only cost $250, which is a lot less than some new RAM, a CPU and GPU.
Funnily enough, I'm the opposite. I used to play consoles ALL the time (8 bit through to 64 bit). Then I started getting more of a decent PC (Voodoo cards, then GeForce, then Radeon) and played more and more PC games. Although I was a great fan of the N64, especially GoldenEye and Perfect Dark, I found playing FPS games with keyboard and mouse much better. Then it got to the point where I couldn't afford to keep upgrading my PC. I was doing other stuff more and more anyway, the PC was mostly a tool for Internet and composition. Yes, I had a good spec PC, but not graphics card, and I kept it clean for my music stuff. After a long while of not playing an awful lot of (recent) console games, I got myself a 360. Now I find myself playing that a lot. I use a laptop instead of my big PC, just for surfing and chatting. I have it on next to me whilst playing 360. And yes, I once again find I'm not too bad with FPS games on a pad. It just takes a bit of practice to get back into it. So yeah, I'm the opposite. I'm using my consoles MORE, and my PC less... for gaming, at least.
Xbox is the future of PC style gaming for countless reasons. All I buy for my PC is a new hard drive every few years.
There was a time years ago when I played PC games more often than consoles, but my desktop is about 7 to 9 years behind the times and I ONLY play consoles now. I play my XBOX360 for PC style games (first person shooters, Oblivion, etc.)...it is easy and dare I say reliable - I have never had an issue with it and it plays most games perfectly, whilst their PC counterparts sometimes give my friends trouble. Mostly I just play my Saturn, PS2, or Wii - Puchi Copter Wii: Adventure Flight is addicting! (just got it last week)
I have to say I'm quite the opposite of you Kev. There seems to be very little AAA PC exclusive games these days and the ones that are (Crysis and such) require a substantle investment in hardware to get the most of. I really like what the PC is capable of but honestly these days I'm playing my consoles more. PS3: Burnout, COD4, Eye of Judgement etc 360: Bioshock, Blue Dragon, Mass Effect etc Wii: Resident Evil 4, Super Mario Galaxy etc Sure COD4 is better on the PC with keyboard and mouse, and if I had the money to upgrade me PC I'd prefer that. But I still get tons of enjoyment out of it.
Strangely, i've been going hardcore handheld over the years. In the old days I loved consoles and PC games and other then tetris I rarely played handhelds. Now I don't play PC games and I find it hard to play any console games. I've got a PS3 & a 360, had a Wii but dumped it. 360 I love the XBLA the most but again really don't care to hook up my 360 just to play an old emulated game for a day and turn it back off. PS3 I use to put a lot of time in but now i again just really don't care for the games as much. PSP is where all my gaming time is put. Something about new age games are starting to put me off, I more just prefer to play older style games (psp due to limitations more feels like ps1/2 era games).
