gscartsw: automatic 8:1 SCART-RGB switch

Just curious what the extension header is for? Can it be used to add a switch to manually change inputs?

 

In v3.4 (which is the current) you can query enabled input port. In gcompsw and in gscartsw_lite (in development) you will be able to manually override the input.

 

Just out of interest (and apologises if this was covered already), can the VGA port of this switch be used to send video via a VGA > RCA to an Elgato Game Capture HD device?

I know that the video into the switch is RGB and wondered if exporting out to composite would cause problems?

I have an Elgato but haven't invested in the cabling I need to test it for me self yet.

 

VGA port has always clean sync, you won't be able to get CVBS from that port. SCART output can be used for that as sync stripper function can be turned off and you will get your output signal without changes.

Ok, here is the status quo of gscartsw_lite. I have a few prototypes right here, these look good but I decided that I will go one more proto iteration before mass-production. That said they won't be available yet, and price is unknown as I'm changing some ICs in those prototypes. I will open gscartsw v3.4 pre-orders soon.

 

Thanks for the status on the gscartsw_lite. I know you haven't released all the details on gscartsw_lite yet (I did see comments that it will drop the vga port, and possibly have a way to manually select/override input), is there any major reason why I should wait for gscartsw_lite if I'm already happy with price/features for the gscartsw 3.4? Also, will gscartsw_lite replace the gscartsw go-foward, or continue to be a separate product?

Just trying to decide if I should join the next gscartsw 3.4 preorder or wait until the lite is available. I'm happy with the features/price on the current model, just want to make an informed decision.

The gscartsw_lite cases arrive today, I'll make some photos and announce it this week. Main thing is that I want to make it cheaper without sacrificing quality / important features. VGA port is gonna be removed and 2nd SCART output added instead. According to gscartsw owners statistics almost everybody is using VGA port in composite sync mode that's why I'm replacing it to SCART.
Other than that it really should be the same as gscartsw.

This week I'm gonna post updates on all my projects (gscartsw_lite and gcompsw). I'm also getting ready to open pre-orders for gscartsw again but the problem is that soon my manufacturer is having Chinese New Year thus I can start manufacturing not earlier than February. Usually I open pre-orders for 2 weeks but I may need to wait another week before opening to cover that New Year gap.
Or should I open it now and keep it open until they are done with the holidays, what do you guys think?

 

If you can handle the extra load from being open an extra week, I don't see a problem opening pre-orders early.

 

The load is fine, it was hard at first, now the demand is lower and I can handle it. The problem is that some people start complaining and asking where is their unit

 

I'd say open it, maybe put a note near the pre-order button so people know it may take an extra week this time around? I personally don't see why people would complain (though I'm sure they do), especially with things like kickstarter when you commonly need to wait 6mo-1yr to get things, if you even get them at all.

 

I dont see any advantages to opening it sooner except people will quit asking when preorders will be open. I think explaining that preorders are not yet open is easier and better than trying to explain why it is taking so long to get the unit.

It's not a big deal though. open them whenever you are ready.

 

Will you be giving a timeframe for when pre-orders for the gscartsw_lite will be open when you officially announce it this week?

 

Lite version is not ready for the mass production, I will announce it but please don't rely on anything gscartsw_lite related at this point.

 

Mine has arrived (UK) but not got it just yet...had to fork out £25 customs charge for it to be re-delivered. :-(
