Hi, I tried to search through the forum but have not found anything useful. Ia there any software to test the hard disk for bad sectors? Of course I could remove the disk and test in on pc, but it would be better to do it on the console side.
No, you would need to do it via a PC, and if you’re softmodded the drive would need to be unlocked for the PC to see and access it. ( not recommended if you don’t know what you’re doing or able to relive said drive )
Yeah, It's softmoded. I changed the disk a few times already so no problem on this side. I was just surprised that there is such a tool for PS2, and on Xbox I have to disassemble it
It always seemed strange to me that the XBox never came with a Scandisk type utility, maybe included in the dashboard. My Xbox has seen a *lot* of use, especially during the it's commercial lifetime, I bought it fifteen or more years ago and immediately had it chipped and a larger hard drive put in so I could run the games from the hard drive, and for many years it was my media player (until high-definition media became the norm, which of course XBMC can't play at full speed), and it's still my emulation machine. And as far as I can tell or recall, it's never once had a problem with a corrupted hard drive file. And I can't remember any of my friends' Xboxes seeming to suffer hard drive corruption. I don't think I've even read on the 'net about someone having corrupt files on their Xbox's hard drive. So maybe the Xbox really doesn't need one, I suppose.
The drive itself can start to behave bad and can produce issues reading some sectors. Most of the time, the xbox games and dashboards only read from the drive. File system corruption usually occurs during writing. An exception to that are the cache folders. We all had to clear those occasionally when a game didn't start anymore. Further there is the corruption you can get if you use a large partition and didn't format with the correct cluster size. So, A diagnostic tool for the xbox harddrive can be usefull.
I've bought mine used. The initial disk it had inside had some bad sectors. I've put some old one from one of the computers, and it also had some problems after a while.
How would you define an old harddisk? If it's over 15 year, it might start to show issues unrelated to it's use in the xbox. Modern drives have a buildin system to relocate bad sectors to another area of the disk. Obviously, they can't recover the contents of that sector if it becomes unreadable.
